SHOT PUT KOVACS Joe 22,56m Observations and Analysis

The American shot putter Joel KOVACS is without doubt the world number one of the event so far in 2015. He has even improved his world leading performance to 22,56m at the Diamond league meet in Monaco . A great throw less than 60cm from a world record which has not been seriously challenged since a long time. But before thinking at 23m+ throws that he looks to be able to perform , KOVACS will have to manage the tension to be in the favorite position at the Beijing World champs next month ...This is never easy , especially when a guy like the German David STORL (22,20m) is also expected to produce throws over 22m . In the major championships , the gliders like STORL or MAJEWSKI have very often been more reliable than the spinners more subject to performances variations depending the mood of the day. Anyways , KOVACS , coached by Art VENEGAS , has many good cards in his game : he is strong , he is fast , he is well in control of his technique , A pure product of the American shot put throwing tradition and philosophy with the exciting challenge for a generation of new young shot put champions to try to clean the dust and the suspicion of the Randy BARNES record.

Might be my eyes but I am pretty sure the official robbed him of at least 15cm measuring it from wrong landing point? Is hard to tell by video I suppose

yes, if you put it in slowmo you can see CLEARLY how the shot put lands further and then it returns a little bit!!

They didn't measure it from the point where the ball returned to obviously, that would have robbed 30 cm at least. Maybe it was a few cm wrong, hard to say from this video.

Could he reach that 23 meters line ?

Kronos Certainly . There is probably one more meter to get if he would be a bit lower on his legs , land his left foot faster and finish longer in the shot in the delivery . His throw is not completely finished and all the forces created during the rotation are not transferred into the implement . I think 24m throws are possible and they will not be achieved by stronger people but by people able to create higher accelerations and better transfers of speeds and forces into the implement.
