BTW for anyone interested it's not lead that you see in dirty barrels (maybe in tiny amounts) but unburnt gunpowder - which is why there is a difference in the amount on hot and cold days.

To be honest I don't generally do anything else. I have found less is very much more shotgun cleaning, otherwise when you come back to it oil has run down in to the action and started leaking in to the wood.

Great video, A few people here asking about using a bore snake. I use one at the very start of my cleaning process but you would be surprised how much crap is left in the barrels after a run through with a snake.

Thank you for such a comprehensive video. I'd like to ask you, can we spray a barrel from outside with oil that we use for bore cleaning, for removing led? Will not it harm bluing of the shotgun?

Using too much oil will run back into the action but if you are storing for a while and you dont like storing barrel down can you not put a cotton wool ball or a small ball of rag in each chamber ?

great video. I have just bought napier kit because my Bisley stuff is getting a bit past it. what are your thoughts on using 0000 wire wool round an old brush? I got told it works to remove the plastic/lead residue from the chamber end of the bore, but am reluctant to use it. I know that chrome is harder than steel and it is only 0000 so it shouldn't scratch it but I am still dubious.

Brian Kavanagh You shouldn't ever really need to check the trigger mechanism with a Browning B525. My local clay ground has one that has fired over a million rounds that is still on the original firing pin and only cleaned as shown here. Thanks for watching :)

Good vid you do the same as me when it comes to cleaning except I do the jag at the end after the wool pull through the jag gets all the fluff out of the barrels. Good vid keep them coming

I tend to find crud migrates under my chokes, so I pop those out after I've finshed with the jag, cleaning them and the choke housings in the barrel with my little finger and the Napier 'toilet roll' with oil. Pop chokes back in and polish barrels inside as you did.

Mine seem to stand up pretty well, they stay in really tight. When I do clean them I like to give them a soak in bore cleaner. I will cover this in a video soon. Thanks for watching and the input :)

Putting the gun back in the cabinet barrels pointing down avoids having to take the gun apart, and avoids excess oil from potentially ruining the stock.

I'm in two minds about the Napier vs Bisley "argument". I was all Bisey, then tried the Napier borecleaner and gun lubricant with jag and ultraclean, but now back to bisley. I may use a combo of bisley for barrels and napier for ejectors. Having said that, I'm sure they're identical anyway.

Have you seen those BoarSnakes its pritty much an all in one brush and mop or patch. I use it and it takes literally seconds to clean the barrel great thing to have especialy to clean in the field :) great vids keep em coming :)

Boarsnakes make sense in the field but when doing a proper clean it doesn't scrub away the build up of burnt powder at the mouth of the chamber you need a bronze brush for that. Using the jag and 'loo roll' is good because it takes away dirt without putting it all over your polishing rod/boar snake. Thanks for watching :)

+James Ingham Eventually you will have a build up of lead in the chamber in front of where the cartridge opens. Aside from leaving an ugly black line you will find shells will start to fail to eject because the lead becomes sticky and holds them in. If you go between 2.5" shells to 3" you may even find they no longer chamber at all or get stuck.

I use ballistol to clean all my weapons. Its great also for exterior and internal gun parts. I love the smell of ballistol too, it has a million and 1 uses including leather maintenance and bicycles :-)

Yes I have heard it is very popular in the states, I've not come across it before.

Yes, not many sellers of ballistol in the UK as it has to be imported from US or Germany I believe but there is a store I know of on ebay that sells it. You really have to try it. It's nothing like any other oil. It's made from 100% natural ingredients yet it doesn't gum up your weapons. It does everything any oil can do including preventing rust, lubricating, cleaning etc etc yet it is recommended for many things that traditional oils are not meant for like maintaining leather & even wood so you won't have problems with it ruining you shotgun stocks like traditional oils. You can even use it for cleaning animals paws and outer ears. It is a little bit expensive but I to get the best value I recommend you get it in the largest pour can rather than the spray you can get a 500ml can for around £15 so it goes a long way.

It's funny you ask that actually as I ran out of the Napier cleaning paper last weekend and had to resort to loo roll. The reason I'd advise against it is that it tears, is hard to get on the jag and leaves bits of fluff in the action! Will do the job if your desperate though. Thanks for watching :)

Scrunched up newspaper serves the same purpose and three passes through the bore typically leaves it ready for bronze brush and mop. Next option is kitchen roll, but newspaper is an excellent initial cleaner.

This was a general cleaning video. You shouldn't need to clean the chokes every time in fact I think I've only ever done mine once in two years. But I will be doing a video separately on choke cleaning as there are a number of factors to consider.

when I talk funny with English long was you can have a shotgun shooting slugs and semi-automatic but you cannot have a rifle that's above 22 in semi-automatic I wonder about rifled shotguns and semi-automatic

You should also NEVER push a bronze brush part way down the barrel and pull it back. It will cause the wires of the bronze brush to scratch the bore. You push it all the way through, then pull back through all the way. If your going to show the eight way, you should know the right way. You have most of it down, but most young shooters do not know the harm a brush can do to a bore if used improperly.
