Quite a few of my European viewers have asked me to test out the Balle Flèche Sauvestre shotgun slugs from France. Sadly, it was impossible to find these for sale in the U.S. and I could not get any from the manufacturer.
Out of the blue, David from France stepped up and offered to send us some.
David's KZbin Channel:
/ upsweet07
Video of Abrams sabot round if you doubt my pronunciation of "sabot" and are losing sleep over it. I don't have time to explain how words often have different regional pronunciations.
• M1A2 Abrams tank ammun...
We used the Chronos 1.4 high speed camera to capture the high frame rate imagery in the video.

Better then tight jeans and a man purse, that's for sure.

That is legendary Savestre sabot slug for smoothbore shotgun.Very comon here in Europe and probably the best smoothbore slug on the world.Slug that make smoothbore shotgun close to rifle the best possible way.There is manny cheaper coppy of Sauvestre here in Europe,even made from brass.Shotguns are No1 all game hunting weapon in Europe.For example shotgun is only legal hunting weapon in Grecce and Turkey.In Austria and Switzerland you can buy double barrel shotgun without any licence. but rifled shotgun barrels are not common and popular like in US.I notice very pore choice of all kinds of smoothbore shotguns slug in US probably because rifled shotgun barrels are very comon in US and very rare in Europe. .
@taofledermaus
@taofledermaus 7 жыл бұрын
Rifled shotguns aren't THAT common here either. In some places in the U.S., certain seasons and areas only allow shotguns. Serious hunters will often have a rifled shotgun, but will also be into rifles and bows too. That way they can hunt almost anywhere have the right tool for the season and area.

This has to be the most reliable & functional sabot shotgun slug you all have shot. Really impressive to see it done right. U.S. Distributors you watching? Get this on the market, way better than 99% of the marketing wank certified (but unreliable) slugs out there. Would love to see some longer range testing on these if you can find a source to acquire some more. They look like they would hold accuracy well at range which is more than can be said for the majority of slugs.

I love the sabot/wad effect of pulling the dart. Take this design, use poly-carb for the lead section of the darts upper. Drill out its center for a core. Use a blunt hexagonal carbide rod as a core. Drill out one end the rod to fit the neck of say a 223. Replace the 223's FMJ bullet with a wad even with the mouth of the shell. Push the rod in the head of the poly/bullet just below the tip of the head. Leave a gap so as to allow the initial impact to be displaced by a crinkle zone between the poly-upper of the bullet and the lower, barring surface. Place modified 223 in the bottom of the poly-upper bullet. Secure the 223 by injecting hotsnot in a hole connected with a groove at the bottom of the poly-upper that aligns with the 223's evaluator groove. Make the same base as they used but... drill out a mount hole for a firing pin. The bullet makes impact, the initial force goes through the poly down to the crumple zone, collapses the free space between the 223's base in the poly-upper and the firing pin in the lower part of the main bullet. The pin hits the 223's primer just as the rod makes impact with surface. BOOM X 2. The sabot/wad pulling effect should minimise pre-fire in the barrel while keeping accuracy and adding penetration with a shotgun. The 223cal, 12g w/armour piercing tip. Buy now. No choke required. Operators standing by. Just Thinkingoutloud

For a long time hunting was a very common man activity in France, and it still is to an extent. We used to be a rural country. We still have more hunters than some other European countries where hunting is more of a noblemen thing. Shotguns were and still are the easiest guns to get, so it's no wonder we developped slugs for it. Why buy an expensive huning rifle with expensive ammo if you can just get a few slugs, sauvestres or brenekes to shoot boars with? Also it's just a theory, but I think the box of 6 is because people either hunt with double barrels shotguns or semi autos limited to 3 shots. So you have 3 or 2 full reloads in one box. Pump shotguns are regulated and aren't widely used anymore.

Interesting. As a former tanker and Master Gunner of the M60A3 and M1A1 I'd like to clear up some misconceptions. The first one is the reason why the 120mm is a smooth bore as opposed to a rifled bore. It has to do with internal pressure and gun wear, rifled cannons simply cannot handle the same pressure without experiencing much greater wear. It actually has nothing to do with the types of ammunition fired, and in fact the smooth bore reduces the types of ammunition that can be effectively fired*. The next misconception is that fin stabilized ammunition must be fired from a smooth bore. Not so, HEAT rounds are fin stabilized and have been fired from rifled 90mm and 105mm with terrific accuracy. HEAT rounds overcome the rifling the same way 105mm APFSDS does, with driving bands that slip. So as the round travels up the bore of the gun most of the spin is taken up by the slipping drive band with only a minimal amount of spin imparted on the projectile. *HEP (High Explosive Plastic), or in British parlance, HESH (High Explosive Squash Head) is a very effective high explosive round that needs spin to be most effective against the intended target. The round is a relatively thin walled projectile and it is meant to squash or pancake against the target whence a base fuze is initiated. It was found early on that spin is necessary to make the most effective pancake upon the target before the base fuze initiates. The Brits love their HESH rounds and is the reason they've stuck by their rifled 120mm cannons.

The Abrams has a smooth bore because of the HEAT ammunition that it fires. adding a spin to that particular round has negative effects to armor penetration because it messes with the creation of the explosively formed projectile that actually penetrates the armor.

FISTER87 no...the british are the ones with rifling, specifically because they only use hesh rounds in anti armor situations...While the smart nations like the US, Germany, france, and all the other NATO(and our asian allies aswell,like japan, and korea)and all other westernized 1st world countries except britian use 120mm smoothbore
@Erpyrikk
@Erpyrikk 6 жыл бұрын
The British still have rifled barrels because it allows them to fire HESH with better effect and the challenger is designed to use 2 part ammunition which is very unreliable to do with smooth-bore guns. The Challenger 2 is due to be replaced 2025 to 2030 ish. I'm an old tanker (11E) from the early 70s we had APFSDS (Tungsten/carbide penetrator) rounds but weren't allowed to fire them because of range restrictions, both here in the US (Ft Knox) and in Europe (Grafenwohr, etc) Our tank was the M60 and it's variants...(105mm rifled main gun). the main gun ammunition was the H.E.A.T. round....it was also fin stabilized and had a ring - a driving band - (bourrelet) made of a type of nylon encasing ball bearings - the idea was to negate the effects of the rifling because spin degraded the accuracy of a finned projectile. Ammo for the 120mm smoothbore main gun no longer has the bourrelet. Reports of the kinetic energy rounds used during the 1st Gulf War showed the DE penetrator plowing through the first wall of the tank emplacements, through both sides of the armored vehicle (usually an MBT) then finally out through the other side of the emplacement. The only round we ever used in training was the concrete filled (dummy weight) blue in color, TP-T training HEAT rounds.

I had a design very similar to this that I sketched up one day in my engineering class in high school about 2 years ago. I turned my teacher on about the idea and he helped me through the steps for the math (calculated stresses, drag, kinetic energy...ect). It is very cool to see an idea I thought about actually look like a feasible projectile. This makes my confidence in my designing skills go through the roof. Maybe I should start patenting some of my designs🤔.... After I get the money.

Most if not all firearms innovation comes from France, riffled barrel, scopes, sabot penetrating ammo (sabot means an ancient wooden shoe that you'd fill with paper, wool or straw when it's cold as wood was the only material that wouldn't get destroyed working in the wet fields and was the most comfortable), bayonet (from the city of Bayonne), metal cartridge, light machine guns, even your AR15/M16/M4 use the exact same mechanism as the MAS 44 rifle

These use more than double the amount of powder a "normal" slug uses, so doubling down with the wrong powder could lead to some seriously bad results. I had to use inert plastic resin to take up the space rather than just add more powder. The company doesn't publish the loading data for these slugs.

I think the reason they have a smooth bore in the Abrams is so they can fire HEAT rounds. The Brits like their rifled barrels like on the Challenger 1 and 2 tanks but since HEAT rounds can't be fired out of a rifled barrel they use HESH rounds. I would want a rifled barrel because I think HEAT and HESH rounds are starting to become obsolete with all the new explosive reactive armor and Chobahm armor and other sandwiched alloys ,that are made to stop HEAT/HESH rounds, that these tanks are made of. For now as long as our enemies in the Middle East have regular steel and iron armor, HEAT and HESH are here to stay. But with other countries such as China developing their technology quickly, I think we would need to stop using smoothbore guns and focus on creating new and better APFSDS rounds like the one on the k2 black panther, which SHARPENS ITSLEF when it pens armor! Unlike most armor piercing discarding sabot rounds which deform when the pen armor.

Wacky Tic Tac isnt all DU ammo self sharpening? Sabot shells are DU i believe
@BazilRat
@BazilRat 7 жыл бұрын
Actually >.> I believe we have a HEAT round that has a slipping driving band so that the round doesn't spin. I could be wrong. The same technology is used to allow a rifled gun to fire a discarding-sabot shell; the big APFDS rounds are (apparently) very adversely affected by spin.
@smokebuur
@smokebuur 7 жыл бұрын
BazilRat Gonna read into that sounds like a interesting engineering problem to solve
@leeshang6419
@leeshang6419 7 жыл бұрын
Wacky Tic Tac It actually does not sharpen itself. The misconception that the penetrator continuously sheds material in order to maintain its conical sharp shape is not true. Actually the formation of adiabatic shear bands means that the sides of the "mushroom" tend to break away earlier, leading to a smaller head on impact, though it will still be significantly "mushroomed".
@estauricossauro
@estauricossauro 7 жыл бұрын
Another thing to take into account is that smoothbore barrels wear at a slower rate. From what I've read, HEAT round are just less effective when spinning, while HESH round are better that way.

Yesterday I got 20 of those slugs, and I can confirm that they work perfectly. I shot 3 wildboars with them and they all went completely through the rib cages. Huge exit hole, unfortunately. I haven't managed to land a headshot, but I hit a fox in the chest and it tore it in half. You don't really see the amount of power these have until you hit something living with them.
