The shotgun has been defending the American homestead for well over 250 years. It is simple in use and can fulfill almost every role a homeowner may need. You can hunt small game (hence the term "birdshot") or large game and defend against any animal 2 or 4 legged. Shotguns will shoot almost any load you can make up. Heck, you can literally load it with stuff off the ground if need be. Add in how inexpensive a pump shotgun can be and you have the perfect weapon for the masses.

I think the shotgun is extremely under rated. Even with the inherent draw backs. As a former LEO I have pumped a large variety of rounds through it. All the way from slugs to tear gas. Making it one of the most versatile firearms available. Depending on what I am doing or where I'm going my shotgun may be the long gun I select. There is a lot of traction given to round capacity. What is rarely stated is that with a rifle or handgun one round is sent at a time. With a shotgun with 00, 9-12 projectiles are sent down range. I love my shotgun. Blessings brother.

Well they say that the pistol is only to get you to the long guns. I prefer to have a less than lethal club as well so that is another bonus to the shotgun. I am also a big fan of the 357 Marlin, shame about the quality issues.

Probably one of the main reasons shotguns have been popular for home defense is low acquisition cost. You can get a decent quality pump shotgun brand new in the $200 range. For home defense, my rule is simple: if you need to move, use a handgun as it leaves a free hand for doors, phone, lights, and grabbing the kids; once hunkered down in the safe room, then you grab the shotgun. No other civilian-legal firearm has the single-shot fight-ending probability of the shotgun loaded with proper ammunition. Good video.

Seems the offender could be heard in the background yelling for help because he had been shot. During the call, the caller could be heard shouting back: “You better just be still or I’ll shoot you again!” Seems the caller, an octogenarian was armed with a S&W 5 shot revolver and had already discharged one round…..into the perp! I really enjoyed this video and it certainly is quite worthwhile. Thank you, Howard. A good Twelve Gauge pump (Remington 870, Mossberg 500/590, and may others) is inexpensive, reliable and - much like a 4, 5, or 6 inch .357 magnum revolver - extremely flexible. Given the right ammunition selection, a 12 (or 20) gauge pump can do so many things very well. For years, my ancient Twelve Gauge 870 (loaded with 00 or #4 Buck) was in my bedroom’s corner; but those days are over, due to spousal “ambiance” concerns. With all this said, I’d respectfully mention a potential issue that wasn’t highlighted in the video. Many current firearms owners will initially have only one weapon, (probably a modern semiautomatic, which can defend both at and away from home) and will rarely if ever shoot it. If they add a pump shotgun to their collection, and intend to use it for home defense, then that obviously means two “manuals of arms” to master. Okay, for many of us that is “truly nothing;.” However, what about the individual who keeps that revolver, semiautomatic or slide action shotgun in the bedroom closet for - literally - years and never even thinks about it? I’d suggest SIMPLICITY and unmaintained reliability are essential for that person . . . and I’d recommend a top quality (new or used), full size revolver, loaded excellent .38 Special +P’s (simple to use, no safeties to disengage or slide to rack, point and shoot, very tolerant of neglect, fewer malfunctions if unmaintained, and easy to hit the target with at normal defensive ranges). Of course, no one should fail to practice with or to maintain his firearms. Realistically, however, a GREAT many people do. And for those folks (imho) a service size revolver - loaded with low recoil, low flash and low acoustic signature .38 Specials - is tough to beat.

One big drawback for me (someone living in a city) regarding shotguns is that I can't shoot them frequently to train because my local gun ranges do not allow you to fire shotguns with anything but slugs. Having been a member of the Trauma Team at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for a year (1969-1970), I was witness to the horrific effects of various shotgun wounds brought to the ER. They varied from accidental wounds incurred while hunting to criminal activities, including murders and even suicides. This experience had a lot to do with my outlook on use of force when I later became a police officer. I also was witness to wounds caused by handguns and rifles, but none of them rose to the destructive power of a shotgun, no matter the gauge. Believe me, even a .410, up close and personal, can ruin your day! I keep a pump 12 ga. The shotgun is a great versatile weapon in 12 or 20 gauge. Especially for people who only want one gun. But I lost my faith in the #4 buck in the early 1980s when an officer in my department shot a robbery suspect one winter. The suspect was about 20 feet away and wearing multiple layers under a heavy leather biker's jacket. It knocked the suspect down, but then he got up and started running. A second officer dropped him with a 357 round. The suspect survived. When we checked, most of the #4 buckshot failed to pernitrate to the suspect's skin and the few that did were just under the suspect's skin. The chief ordered all the #4 buckshot pulled and replaced with #00 buckshot. The #4 was burned up in practice.

Great Video! Like you, I have been an LE Firearms Instructor for many years. I can attest to the fact that MOST Police Officers HATE the 12 gauge qualification course. Unless they grew up around shotguns, the recoil factor was a negative to them. My agency selected Officers (who volunteered) and sent them to a Tactical Shotgun Course. These Officers were issued their own Remington Model 870 as well as a Tactical Vest which held several different types of shotgun rounds (OO, Birdshot, Slugs) and were trained in the use of each round. The beauty of a shotgun being that you can easily select the round best suited for the job at hand. To supplement the shotgun all Officers were issued and trained in the use of the M4 style carbine and had to qualify twice a year at distances up to 200 yards. Not exactly USMC standards but well enough for the intended use by LE. I recently purchased a KelTec KS7. After spending a few days at the range and putting a hundred or so rounds through it, It is now my "go-to" shotgun. Very easy to manipulate and move with. I attached a very bright light and added a padded stock. I love my Mossberg's and Remington's but this KelTec is awesome. @@sgtmajtrapp3391 Yes, and in a great many situations, the mere presentation of a weapon will immediately convince the felon to break contact (psychological stops). Of course, I am NOT suggesting that a firearm’s owner should ever be untrained, or fail to maintain his equipment, or not have a well considered defensive plan, or anything else of that sort. But any firearm - even a less than ideal one, for a given set of circumstances - is infinitely better than nothing at all. Many years ago - before firearm’s law were so extreme - I was living far out in the country (in Durham County, NC), while the Navy was attempting to educate me at Duke’s Business School. We owned a large piece of property, becuase our water came from our home’s well and our sewerage went into our home’s septic tanks. Teenage guys - and, hell, I understood this from experience - used to roam through our woods at night, raising a little Cain. This worried my wife, and one night I politely asked these guys to go elsewhere, while having my Remington 870 at port arms. A good informative video. I remember when we were first looking at 5.56mm carbines. We found in testing of our own that they went through less walls overall (with proper duty ammunition) than 12 gage duty rounds or pistol rounds. This is why we went to them instead of MP5s for high risk entries. You are right about officers not liking them. At my old agency shotguns were optional of officers wanted to use them. Out of 28 only me and another officer had them next to our rifles. Also something to consider is effective distance and precision. If we have to make precise shots then a slug is needed (unless close enough to control pellet spread) and how many officers practice proficiency in a slug changover and long shots. We qualed at 50 yards at them and it was hard to get precision shots vs easy with an AR. Now my state prohibits shotguns by law for law enforcement. When I have taken officer's wives out to learn shooting (at their husband's request) virtually everyone has decided to utilize an AR as their choice after trying multiple options. The recoil management, optics options and ability to just sit in a corner, call the calvary and wait is what they preferred. A side note for the handgun. If you need to hold onto a child or other being when protecting your home a handgun with a light and optic may be the best choice. But you had better practice.

Another good thing about an AR-15 for home defense, as mentioned by my old firearm instructor since Californians need three weeks of firearm course before getting anything (used to live there). He said since most of us live in packed neighborhood (my current neighborhood in another state may not be as packed as California, but still at least 20 yards apart), if a home invader came, especially if you have frangible rounds, but FMJ works in pinch too, but make sure all rounds hits the dirt, especially soft dirt so they enter it and don’t bounce, but yes, if perps try to invite the house, open a window, aim at the dirt, DO NOT aim up and especially not straight, and squeeze two rounds into the dirt! Guarantee you the perps will be running for the hills pissing and shitting at the same time! I don’t understand it at first and only recently bought an M&P-15, but still, the first time I entered the range, someone squeezed off a 5.56mm round and I instantly understood why! The freaking thins IS LOUD! I felt as if I busted my eardrums! Also, the distinctive CrrrrraaaaacccccK of the supersonic round make sure everyone know someone just shot a gun! Also, that sound can be heard as much as 1.25 miles away so everyone in the neighborhood will wake up whether they like or not. So yeah, if you live in the burbs and have an AR, just shoot the dirt! Guarantee most perps will run like hell when the Crrrraaccck, Crrraccck just had everyone in the neighborhood call the cops!

I think an important question to ask when choosing a home defense platform is what home am I trying to defend. Someone who lives in an apartment may want to choose something different than say someone living on a farm. For my self defense firearm I have a PCC because living in the woods it is easy to grab and take care of critters such as foxes, raccoons, or coyotes, however someone leaving on 100 acres of farmland would probably want a rifle handy to protect his livestock, whereas someone in an apartment may be more concerned about over penetration.

The home defense shotgun is a Mossberg 590 "Nightstick" with laser and set up for firing shorty shells (with adapter). At in-home distances, the "shorties" is all that I need. A .73-caliber, 5/8-ounce lead slug traveling somewhere in the vicinity of 1250fps can be quite brutal...on the bad guy without being brutal to the good guy in terms of recoil. With that said, I hope that I never need to use it. Having had to lite off a 12-gauge in a closed space at one time, without hearing protection, I can say that the lose of hearing that followed has not endeared me to the shotgun for protection inside the home, although the loss of hearing has an advantage when the wifey complains about me not taking out the trash😁.

Standing and clapping, great content. It is hard to do a week of comparison in 18 minutes. You left out the mag feed shot guns and 20 ga and 410, yes they have less 00 buck. I like to think of a shot gun helps you to catch up in a fire fight, meaning with a single pull of trigger 6-9 buck pellets at your treat. A single pellet is greater than a 30 cal bullet. It would take 6-9 pulls on trigger to send rounds to treat. Do not want to get in to size myths. Also you did not have time to discuss cartage vs shot variances but not enough time to do that. Great data for beginners to catch basics to mull over in their mind, which gives them a chance to ask better questions. Again this was a great video.

There is one other factor you did not mention that for some people is very important--cost. A good security-type shotgun can be purchased for quite a bit less than any type of carbine, whether an AR or a pistol-caliber. Two Stevens 320s or Maverick 88s can be had for the price of one AR. As for recoil, that can be lessened, with some 12-gauge shotguns, by loading mini-shells.

What I think is up and coming are all sorts of braces for handguns which can be either small and just add another contact point or those that enjoy catching every bit of dirt a handgun can give. The ability to be accurate under stress is elevated signifcantly, but the weight is still low, one hand is enough if necessary and even more potent handgun rounds are manageable this way. Wow I just must not be the special ops commando that you are. I mean, damn I don’t sleep with one eye open. I may need more training…I certainly won’t argue there. But id rather be a practical, rational individual that needs more training than an arrogant, egocentric tactical commando in my own mind and THINK I know more or have more abilities than I actually do. But, that’s just my opinion.

Thats a question for every individual.....but for me, YES!!!I'd like to address a couple of the things I hear repeated over and over in these kinds of videos. 1) being that shotguns are long and heavy. My current bedside shotgun sits right next to an AR carbine with its collapsible stock set to my preferred LOP and the shotgun is exactly 3/8 of an inch longer. Heavier , yes I will concede that. But given that weight comes directly from its much more effective payload I'm more that willing to accept that! As far as capacity goes an AR carbine in 5.56 with a 30 rounds magazine and 55 gr ammunition has the ability to launch 30 .22 caliber 55 gr projectiles down range with 30 pulls of the trigger. My Shotgun loaded with 9 rounds of 00 buckshot can put 81 .33 caliber 52gr projectiles down range with 9! At home defense distances I'd take the shotgun every time! I love the AR platform and it has its place, but in a home defense situation it's not even close! I have made the statement more than I'd like to have in my lifetime going all the way back to the days of people arguing the 6 round capacity of a revolver being inadequate for home defense . And what I ask is, can you give me reliable verifiable examples of where someone defending their home needed more than 6-8 rounds of .357 magnum or 12 gauge buckshot to do so? And I would also argue that anyone that did lacked proper proficiency with their selection of weapon not lacked capacity. And that person would more than likely have lost that fight with a 15-17 round 9mm pistol or a 30 round AR carbine.

Another interesting question to ponder would be “how many times were multiple assailants dispersed by discharging a single round of shotgun ammo?”
@johncoleman2495 Жыл бұрын
@@hrfunk I train pretty regularly, as anyone and everyone should and I'm currently using my fifth semi auto shotgun that's now gone almost 2200 rounds with only 2 malfunctions. Both of which were cheap bulk federal birdshot training ammo. I don't believe I'd have any problem putting down multiple assailants with multiple rapid shots.... with full power buckshot I can keep 5-6 hulls in the air without missing a silhouette at 15 yards....I can definitely put a lot more lead down range quickly with a shotgun than I can with an AR carbine. And I'm no slouch with that either. And as you stated yourself, buckshot is absolutely devastating at home defense ranges. No hand or shoulder fired weapon is more effective at close range.
@johncoleman2495 Жыл бұрын
@@hrfunkI like to add that I have no problem firing 200 rounds in a session, almost always more that half of the buckshot or slugs. And although I understand a shotgun may not be for everyone, it's not as hard to become proficient with one if you have the mindset to do it. And although I'm not a big fan of them, these modern reduced recoil loads are pretty mild by comparison. All I'm saying is in the right hand with the right mindset and a little practice, you cannot beat a shotgun inside the home.

I moved to South Georgia as a young man and my wifeś male cousins couldn´t believe that I did not own a shotgun. ¨You gotta have a shotgun¨ was the apparent rule in those parts. Off I went with them to KMart and purchased a single shot 12 Ga. On the way home I dispatched 3 rattlesnakes crossing the sandy back road leading to their house. Lesson learned. Regretfully I sold that piece when we moved from Georgia, but it provided good service against all manner of snakes and bagged more than its share of squirrels, doves and quail. I almost shot my foot off with my Mossberg 500 once while turkey hunting, but that was totally operator error.

Always thought about going with the shotgun or ar pistol setup but for alot of reasons always come back to the handguns that I lug around with me the majority of the year simple striker fired no safety besides the one between my ears and am pretty darn confident with at bedroom/hallway distances.

While I have all of the options mentioned, including an old 12 gauge Remington 1100 set up with a Slug/Riot Barrel, I've come to favor my old Marlin Camp 9 Carbine for extreme Home Defense, particularly since I live in a populated area where over penetration is a concern. The Marlin Camp 9 takes S&W 5900 series Magazines.

Yep. Back in the early 1990s we had Camp 9s in our patrol cars. I should have bought one when they were retired.
