Grandpa got a Winchester 1200 in 16 when he turned 14 years old. When I turned 14, he handed it down to me. Kills everything I point it at, and everyone I’ve allowed to shoot it immediately begins their quest to buy their own 16. I’m super stoked to see big channels talk about the 16, let’s solidify its place in the mainstream.

I have a Browning Sweet Sixteen that I've had for 58 years. My dad gave it to me for Christmas when I was 11 years old. I can't imagine the number of cases of shells fired thru that shotgun. This was small town South Carolina and you could carry your shotgun on the school bus and put the gun in the corner of the classroom. I would go out to a friend's farm or he would come out to my farm. We shot dove, duck, quail, and deer. I have two barrels. 26" IMP and 28" Mod. The shotgun cost $198 back then. We kept 2-3 bird dogs, pointers and setters. We also hunted on horseback in those days. Those were the good ole days.

I grew up with family Phesant hunts in south central Nebraska. My uncle had a Browning A5 Auto in 16ga. He was the most deadly of the group, he was also someone you could be clipping down the gravel roads at 50mph and he would suddenly say, "hey there were some roosters in that thicket back there! ". His eyes were something else. I remember one time, I will never forget, he seen some roosters in this pile of trees and brush, surrounded by plowed barren dirt field. After getting landowner permission we went back. Most of the group stayed back in disbelief, I was a young kid with just a single shot 20ga. Uncle and I approached the literal pile of debris and it exploded with phesants. I know he got two, I think I was just dumbfounded by the numbers and got nothing. Everyone else hanging out at their vehicles where scrambling around trying to get their guns loaded. The group stopped disbelieving him after that day.

First off, nice to see you guys talking smoothbores! I have two 16’s; my dad’s A5 Sweet from the late 60’s and my maternal grandfather’s model 12 from the 40’s. The comparison to quality mechanical watches is spot on with quality firearms. If you want to just have a smoke pole, the 870 is standard edition. If you want to just tell time from your wrist a Timex carries the load. Lastly, the 16 is to shot guns that the 25-06 is to rifles for me.

I had an old Winchester model 12 in 16 guage with a poly choke. No bluing left looked terrible but still shot well. The serial number looked to be an early 1950s shotgun. I sold it and woke up the next morning thinking, "What did I do?". At that point, I decided I would never sell another gun again and haven't. I just buy another safe.

My 2nd shotgun was a Remington 870 16 ga. that I grew to love much more than my 1st the 12 ga. 870. Before my father passed he gave me his Remington Model 11-48 16 ga. another great 16 ga. shotgun. I agree with Ryan whole-heartedly that the 16 ga. is the perfect pheasant gun. While I've used the 16 ga. for ruffed grouse and other upland game, now days whenever I am headed to the field for pheasants one of these 16 ga. shotguns are in my hand. I bought my wife an ithica model 37 feather weight in 16 gauge shortly after we were married so she could hunt with it. I think I paid less than $200 for it but it's by far my favorite shotgun we own purely for the uniqueness of the bottom feed/bottom eject action and for it being a 16 guage. I recently 'inherited' my dad's 16 ga. Remington 1100, it has a 30" non-ribbed barrel with a fixed Improved Cylinder choke. He bought it new in 1968, the year before I was born, and it was his dedicated Dove gun. He's 82 now and hasn't been on a Dove shoot in more than a decade but it still cycles shells just fine, although now it favors a little heavier shot load.

My best friend in high school had a 16 gauge Mossberg bolt action with a C-Lect choke on it. It was common back in 1972 to see bolt action shotguns, double barreled shotguns, and single shots in 16 gauge back then. The 20 gauge took over the 16 gauge slot with American hunters. When I was stationed in Germany, the 16 gauge competed with the 12 gauge in popularity. I have picked up an old Winchester single shot in 16 gauge and about four boxes of shells.

A case study on how NOT to launch a new cartridge. Base it on an odd size case that never took off. Rush it to market and fumble the initial bullet offering. Cause confusion with chamber specs and roll out bad reamers. Give it an obscure name. Hard to overcome all that. I have it in a bolt gun and am a fan. And I agree it is fading fast. Saw the writing on the wall and saved all my fired brass. Great idea, lousy execution. 22ARC should be the final nail in the coffin.

While y’all were primarily focused on birds and small game, many people use shotguns for hogs and deer. Especially those in the southeast. We actually use dogs to run deer in SC. One of the most popular shotguns is the Belgium Browning A5’s. From the std 12 to Light Twelve to std 16 to SweetSixteen. The 16 is extremely popular because the A5’s for some reason hold a great pattern of buckshot. My dad used his SweetSixteen from 1959 to 2011 when I gave him a Belgium A5 Light 12. While there are light semiautomatic 12’s, many people still trust the 16 because of its smaller frame when walking through thickets. Keep in mind, our idea of thickets is wwwwaaaayyyyy different than many areas of the country. Our thickets, if you can see 10ft, it’s fairly open.

As a 16 gauge aficionado and embassador, 20 gauge is not superior or even worthy of being included in the same conversation as 20 gauge, outside of gun weight. 12 gauge is too much for no reason, only great for tactical purposes. 20 gauge is great on moving targets. 16 gauge leaves little room to error and will show you your flaws as a shooter. 16 gauge has one thing above 12 and 20 in reality, it kills everything. I have only crippled one bird, it was my fault, a pulled a shot. 12, 20 and especially .410 seem to cripple birds at far higher rates in my experience. Mind you, with 12 it's likely from yourself making a bad shot much like a 16, but 16 patterns nice and tight, you rarely hit the meat. You rarely get flyer pellets, where 20 gauge, that's a constant. It's incredibly rare for me to not have at least one pellet in my meat with a 20 gauge. The cost of 16 gauge shells is irrelevant in many cases, as you can use guns like a 12 or 20 for heavy volumes of shooting or target shooting in general. 16 gauge is the hunters gauge, that's where it will always dominate over all gauges. Although, target loads for 16 gauge are starting to come around, same with trap and skeet guns in 16 gauge, first time really since 1926. Their is talks about giving 16 gauge its own class, but that's a forever rumor. Point is, the more people buy and use 16 gauge, the cheaper it will become. 16 gauge is the under appreciated hero, and it just WILL NOT DIE. No matter how many times they tried to disappear that gauge with rules and regulations, it's too good to give up. It's time 16 gauge gets the credit and reputation it truely deserves.

Bit of a 16 gauge historian because I have always enjoyed it. 16 gauge wasn’t given a Skeet gauge because Remington and Winchester bribed, blackmailed and threatened officials at the NSSA to not allow it. Why you might ask, as 16 Gauge up to this point was the most popular gauge in the US? For a number of reasons. 1 they didn’t like that the 16 gauge was the everymans gun. They were trying to sell competition guns at competition prices because the old days of mass hunting were done. If the old guard wanted to play the new game they would have to conform. Elitists were already determined to ruin everything Two, it allowed them to still make some 16 gauges, but after 1926 many or most were just 16 gauge chambers and barrels on a 12 gauge frame, which reduced costs, and again hurt the reputation of 16 gauge because is now carried like a12 3 you had to buy new ammunition if you already owned a 16 and wanted a level playing field. They knew Skeet would be higher volume shooting, but wanted to force people into buying new guns and new ammunition. People shooting old stock hunting loads didn’t make them any money. Also according to NSSA-NCSA sub gauge is anything below 16 or gauge.

I’ve owned a couple 16 gauges through the years. one single shot and one semi auto both rough guns I picked up on deals. Then had people that ended up wanting them more than me and they both found new homes. I liked the gauge but it just didn’t do anything my 12’s or 20 couldn’t.

It’s tough to get any more iconic than a sweet 16 model 12.

A watch tells time, something the cell phone in your pocket already does. A shotgun, even if theyre fancier than need be, cant be replaced by your cell phone.

One of his last broadcast, Paul Harrell was asked if he was ever surprised by results. He said he had assumed the the 12 was more powefull, but the 16 guage loads were a bit faster.

I went to the shop for a 16g and found a driling gun that was 16x16 over a 22lr. Looked sweet, but it was too bespoke for me.

We must be getting old when you get tired of tactical ars and appreciate the wood and steel simplicity of the break action shotgun more😂😂

There was a song written about the 16 gauge, Tennessee Ernie Ford.

In Norway where i live ther is a lot of 16 gauge shotguns on the market because it's hard to find ammo for them So if you want a drilling ther are "plenty" So when I was looking for a drilling I seteld for a 12.70 over 6.5/55 Swedich Simpely because of the in Scandinavian both of them are easy to comby

Drillings with larger gauge than 16, are just clumpy heavy sledge hammers! And why in heavens way, do you pick a rifle cartridge inferior to the system? A rimmed cartridge is way better for a drilling. Never fail to extract and easy to pick out the empty case. I would without doubt choose a 20/76 + 7x57R over the 12/70+6.5x55.

14:28 This year, I will be hunting alone with a bow. Occasionally with a friend. Next year, I will be bringing some sort of shotgun for support. I live in British Columbia. We do have GRIZZLY bear, along with cougar and black bear. All of which live near our town seasonally at least. So very much in the backyard public land, when deer and moose hunting. So I will be looking for a shotgun. Being in Canada, I haven't found the same broad selection of over under pairings. That said, if I could get a 16 or 20 gauge shotgun, potentially paired with a small game Ballistic round. Perhaps something suitable for coyote. (many people use 22lr for coyote?) I would feel as if I have one support for anything the bow is less suited for. That said, if I could get a deer cartridge over a bear gauge under I'd be very happy. I suppose that's one purpose for shotgun buckshot and slugs. Versatility. Would you feel confident, versus Black Bear or Bison, With a 16 gauge?
