I love your comment about your dad that he worked 16 hours and didn’t want to play with trains. I worked for the Milwaukee Road back in the 70’s as a switchman/brakeman/conductor. One morning getting off of work a engineer said come on over for a beer and let’s play with my trains. I laughed and said the same thing as your dad. Yes I did go over to his house and played with his trains.

The Irwood sign caught my eyes right away! Great layout, great tour of it, and I love that it reminds you of your dad. Rock on!

As a kid I had both HO and N scale, but because I was one of those ADHD Kits dealing with those little wheels, small tracks was too much. So Mom took my stuff down to Frank the Train Man at Parks and ECB and sold my sets. At 12 I began playing with Radio Stuff and at 14 earned my first Amateur Radio License, well the rest is history at 62 not only am I still an Active Radio Amateur (HAM) but I also hold me FCC General Radio Telephone Commercial License and have worked in Radio Communications professionally for 41 years one of my programs was the Emergency Broadcast System/ EAS/IPAWS. Yes, the sound of Shotguns voice does bring back those childhood memories wanting to work on Broadcast Transmitters and hanging out at College Grove peering through the window at the On-the-Air talent at KSON.

Holy "coal tender" Shotgun! Well, back to the ol' 4' x 6' layout for an envious sigh! Nevertheless, it's great to see some return to an era when coal, steam and iron rail was breathtaking. The sound of those "driving wheels" on a huge 4-8-4 as they began their motion before the first blast of steam and pressure release. An image and sound that never left that 4-year old's mind in over 73 years.

I didn't touch my model trains when I worked for the railroad. I agree with his father, after working 12 hours everyday, you just don't want to see trains at home. The job was enough of a fix.
