@@dillonhonore3579 An Aquilifer was a special type of signifer (standard bearer). Normal Signifers carried the eagle of their cohort/century, and this was already a special role/designation. The standards would have cohort/century awards and recognitions. An Aquilifer was the sole signifer in a Roman Legion to carry the Eagle of the Legion (standard for entire legion). Losing the eagle was considered a grave dishonor to everyone (Rome, the Legion itself, legionaries, and the commanders), and Aquilifers were often accompanied by veteran Legionary bodyguards.

Originally, in the Republican Era, it was just one amongst many military symbols (signa militaria) but after the Marian reforms it gained precedence. During the late Republic and the subsequent Imperial Age, the Aquila represented the power&glory of Rome projected wherever the Legions marched and loss of even a single standard in battle incurred great shame/lamentation but also extreme forms of retribution (example: the loss of three Eagles in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest and the campaign of revenge that led to two of the Eagles been regained leading to the Battle of Idistaviso)

The fall of Rome is the saddest point of human history. A civilization centuries ahead of its neighbors, evolved in arts, literature, infrastructure, architecture, government, warfare, and just about everything else. Just think about how much further along we'd be if they hadn't collapsed, it took us more than half a millennia just to get on the tech level they had before they fell.
@mikeschlau45014 жыл бұрын
Right. In Britain, the tech-level after the fall of Rome sank under those of the celts. Londinium had about 500 citizens left, Rome ifself ca. 30.000 in the sixth century (from over a million!). it was not early medieval times, it was a Dark Age for sure.
@connorgolden44 жыл бұрын
Amen. Not on did civilization regress in the west (the Eastern Empire was doing just fine, still basking in the light of Rome) but it forever split Europe up into petty realms who wasted centuries squabbling over petty disputes. Once you could walk from the coast of northern Gaul to Egypt (minus a little trip across the Hellespont) and be in the same nation. All the while needing only 2 languages to be able to do so.

Not entirely true. Though civilisations did decrease at first on a technological scale, they did improve themselves over time. The Romans did actually quite little on improvements themselves, mostly because they did not have any opposition of a similiar caliber. Medieval countries actually had to improve all the time, otherwise they risked lagging behind.

I have no idea what this triumphant march is for because Rome conquered Judea in 63 BC by General Pompey Magnus, and Pilate was appointed governor of Judea at around 27 AD. Still a pretty cool scene though.

That's actually bad timing or bad directing even - just another mistake like the one where you see the army marching past houses barely reaching to their knees. The makers of this film wanted to present a spectacular chariot race, and in a way they did succeed in doing that, but there were a lot of other glitches in the movie. Just as the costuming - people at that time did not wear pants, at least not in that part of the world, and certainly women didn't. @@ivongrey9047 They were carrying their equipment on their shoulder with a pack mounted on a wooden pole (some times in the shape of a cross), called marching pack. (imagine a wooden pole with packs wraped on the end of it) They were not using gucci leather backpacks as shown in this clip, bud. My point was the backpacks not the fact that they are carrying their own equipment...

Was Hadrian the one who dispersed them around the empire? Because if so he certainly did something wrong, he spread the poison everywhere.
@edim1084 жыл бұрын
@@ingurlund9657 The diaspora was a side effect of him absolutely obliterating Judea after a revolt. Almost 600k Jews were killed, thousands were taken into slavery, Judaism was outlawed, The Temple was raided and two statues were raised in it (one of Jupiter and the other of Hadrian himself), sacred religious texts from the Temple were burned, Jews were prohibited from entering Jerusalem or Aelia Capitolina as it was renamed to, Tora Law was prohibited as was the Jewish Callendar, countless Jewish scholars were killed, and on, and on, and on... If He could, Hadrian would've killed every single Jew on the planet. Sadly for him, it was not possible and he had to relent at some point and thus the diaspora dispersed throughout the empire and with it, Christianity spread far and wide.

Everyone here talking about Rome arriving, and about the assassination, and here I am wondering why the legionaries are singing the Airborne Ranger cadence.
This marching tune is something I remember from the Army. I've been serving now for 20 years and for the life of me, I remember the tune and being in marching formations where the tune is used. It's common, but I am having a devil of a time trying to remember the words. The tune is right there in my head.

I remember a video on youtube somewhere where they took that cadence for Ranger School iirc.
