In today's video, I give you the three KILLER shooting mistakes player make on their jump shots! These simple shooting mistakes can really hinder a players ability to really score the basketball. By making sure you are avoiding these killer shooting mistakes you are automatically going to give yourself a better opportunity to increase your overall shooting percentage. By implementing these tips into your game you can almost immediately skyrocket your shooting!
My first tip is one that I tell all my players that are serious about taking their scoring and shooting to the next level, and that is "load the ball lower". Yes, this seems to contradict most traditional shooting instruction, but if we dive into the best shooters in the NBA we notice that all of the elite shooters load the ball lower by their waist or thigh. The common misconception is that it will actually make your shot slower, but in reality, guys like Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard are two of the most elite shooters in the NBA and get their shot off basically whenever they want to. Both of them load the ball lower. So the biggest thing that most players need to focus on is to not set the ball on the shelf. This is something that kills players shooting because of a lack of fluidity and power.
My second pro tip when it come to avoiding these scoring mistakes is keeping your heels up! Heel strikes are one reason why so many players really struggle with getting enough power on their jump shot. Keeping your heels elevated will ultimately help you keep your body ready to explode into your shot while also allowing you to generate as much power as possible. This is something we see a lot of the best shooters in the world implement into their game guys like Stephen Curry and James Harden. The number one reason why they rarely miss short is because they are experts at making sure there is zero loss of power when they shoot keeping everything extremely fluid.
The last shooting tip that really messes up players shooting form is hand behind the ball. The reason why it messes so many players up is that body bio mechanically it's super hard to do and extremely uncomfortable for most shooters. This one thing can cause a long domino effect that can ultimately cause a ton of other issues in your jumper. My advice to all players is experiment with different hand placement options and find which one works best for you to make sure your jump shot is not only super wet, but also super comfortable. Confidence is something we see in ALL of the great shooter's the best way to make sure you are a confident shooter is to make sure your shotmechanics are dialed in! So avoid these three killer shooting mistakes, and I promise you will become a lights out shooter in no time!

Are you a Guard that regularly Dribbles the ball in your Offense and are you Short? If so... listen to this guy. If you are a Forward OR Tall OR someone that usually gets the ball off of the Kick/Dish from Inside or on the Wing from the Top? If so... listen to you coach. This guy does know what he is talking about. But what he knows and teaches is pretty much all built around being a SHORT, dribble heavy Guard. I'm not saying you CAN"T do it his way if you are not a short, dribble heavy Guard. But doing this his way takes away all of the advantages of being Tall and is unrealistic unless you are dribbling into most of your shots. Once you factor in coming off screens to catch and shoot or waiting on the kind of passes you get from the Top to the Wing or from the Lane to the Wing... you are now dealing with unreliable passes (most of the time). You'll be reaching wide to the Left or right, digging the pass off of you toes, pulling the ball out of the air as far as you can reach etc etc etc You will not have time to catch that crap pass and load it the way this guy says in time to get off a consistent shot. You will make more than enough shots getting into a Loaded position above the Shoulder if you are STRONG ENOUGH and your Hand and Wrist Mechanics/Form is right. You are not shooting the deeper NBA "3". If you can shoot 50 a day in practice and hit the rim each time... you are strong enough to shoot this way in games when you will usually shot 10 or less. If you are missing too many... your follow-through is probably your problem..

Hadn't played basketball in a decade. Ran into some trouble in high school that took the sport away and became resentful. Finally got back shooting during quarantine and man it feels good! Was discouraged because my jumper was trash but over the past few weeks has improved. Wild that one of the main things holding me back was old thinking. Used to always go with what was comfortable, but coaches seem to beat that out of you until you conform to what they expect a jump shot to be. Have always gathered it low with hand a bit to the right to get more control with my middle finger to get a crisp rotation. This video helped me see I need to go with what came natural! Thank you so much!

Love the hand on the side or on the top of the ball. This step alone made smoother and my rotation so much better. The 2nd thing that drastically improved my shot was the position of my feet. Good video. 👍 True. Everyone’s body mechanics is different. So you can’t force everyone to shoot the same way but there are some basics that are universal. At this point we should be able to quantify more specific techniques for specific body types. We have the technology. That’s what I hope to see in the future. To be able to analyze flaws specific to the shooter.

A problem i have with hand positioning is that me and all kids including do indeed shoot with the hands on the side of the ball. The problem with this and that i learned is that it makes the shot way more inconsistent; i tend to get a lot of sidespin because my shooting hand is on the side and has to do extra motion to turn it straight facing the basket and also it just makes me use my guide hand more because my hand needs to turn in order to follow through to the basket if its on the side. I just dont get how this improves shots. And yes i know steph curry, other Nba players, etc. but they have the luxury of shooting thousands of shots everyday and getting used to it. Im just a bit confused with ur stance because u see guys like drew hanlen teach good hand positioning with the hand in the middle of the ball not the side and this mans been working with really good players like bradely beal, jayson tatum, etc.

I knew there was something off with having hand behind ball before shooting. I always felt more comfortable and more natural with my hand on the side before shooting and would swish them more efficiently. When I was younger I thought i was doing it incorrectly but now I know it was right all along.

Loading the ball low helps initiate the legs into the shot creating more force, it’s not just about the arms. Women especially have to do this. Elbow under and directly behind the ball at release is essential. Ball should go from strong side hip and up in a straight line for consistency in shooting accuracy.

Keep doing what feels natural. He will get over it especially if you make it! I coached for 40+ yrs trust me. Unless he is a my way or the highway coach, (not many of those around anymore) he might get mad but once it goes n he will get over it. These guys tips are great and I more thing is confident be confident.
