i practiced shotokan, kyokushin and muay thai. shotokan has good technique and really fast but it has no match to kyokushin and muay thai. in kyokushin and muay thai it is not just technique but toughness and power as well. the only few advantages of muay thai over kyokushin are face punches, throwing and spinning elbow strikes, but when it comes to toughness i would go with kyokushin. that's just my opinion from my experiences. no disrespect to other martial arts. osu

Fully agree with @ kashif ahmad. Not all shotokan is the same - sport karate is sport karate; budo karate is budo karate. And while there are similarities there are very real differences. Look at how TKD has 'devolved' for sport - no punches! That's not a true martial art. Karate is Karate. There is no technique in Kyokushin that does not occur in Shotokan. The difference is in the approach to "tournaments." Shotokan prefers no (or little) contact. Nakayama (the inventor of tournament karate) insisted on this in order to protect the practitioners. Egotistical Kyokushin practitioners seek to bludgeon their opponents into submission. All this does is to inflate the ego, which, to me, is antithetical to the purpose of karate, which is to defeat the ego and to improve one's character. Kyokushin fails desperately at this.

First of all, this is about ippon in Shotokan vs ippon in Kyokushin, not about which style is better. There is a clear difference in that Shotokan tournaments seem to allow more techniques. Kyokushin fights seem to end more often in knockouts than Shotokan fights. Frankly any martial art or rather, any seemingly universal training method where two guys are nice enough to stand there and trade body blows does not seem like an ideal way to train in any martial art. I do realize that fighters modify how they fight depending on the circumstances, but if you train such that your reflex is stand and deliver, and receive blows, then it seems likely that you would do that in any fight. That is not an ideal way to train. I do not blame the martial art, but the way many of its practitioners train.
