Thank you for posting such a long clip of the instruction of Shihan Kagawa. Many more karateka around the world will benefit from this video than were present in the room. You truly provide a service to the Shotokan community by capturing and sharing the experience. Oss!!

M Cron - I echo your remarks. These days Kagawa Sensei is an extremely good teacher for western karate students that enjoy their karate as a serious hobby. Some of his pointers are little gems and he's constantly providing little gems that can really help improve us 'average Joe's' out there.

Within the shotokan community there are variations of this kata all are amazing to watch. I train in JKA and Kagawa Sensei reminds me of my current sensei. I really like my current Sensei and the way he teaches is so similar. This one is the same as what I'm currently learning . No difference, great for my exam coming up to review! All to often the study of kata is criticized by those whom are "Arm Chair fighter's" "Spectators" these so called know it all critics have no clue as to the importance of Shadow boxing push ups and sit ups jumping jacks, rope skiping, weight lifting, ect. All are necessary exercises for stamina and strenght training. These kata tectniques are training excersises to condition the body to move sharply and swiftly in a multitued of directions while maintaing balance and maximizing power and effectiveness. Even the weakess of black belts is better prepared for battle than when he/she fist began traing. Great video. Oss.

Geez people I was going to remain quite but in the face of such absurdity I must speak! In regards to Kagawa Sensei with whom I have had to pleasure to study and practice with and who is truly worthy to be called Shihan!... FIrst of all, lions do not concern themselves with the opinions of the sheep, secondly I don't give a hoot how long you been doing what, if you do not understand the basics of proper etiquette and respect then you mind as well shout your mouth. Even if I were to witness Kagawa Sensei/Shihan making a mistake which I seriously doubt then I would have enough decency and respect not to point it out the way some have here. The man has dedicated him self to the art for over 40 years and contributed beyond measure to it's cultivation. Thank you Kagawa Sensei / Shihan OSS

LOL there is one guy there that is like, is this guy ever gonna stop, I am hurting all over. My sensei was very similar, he would work us until he was tired, never the other way around, he had no time for slackers, I remember leaving my dojo on many nights barely able to walk, with muscle burn everywhere, I loved every minute of it though.

Gosh, Kenshi, I sympathize with your situation - KZbin must be very difficult for you if your vision is such that you can’t make out colors... :-( If indeed you can distinguish colors, then please allow me to share a fundamental value of Shotokan karate - respect. It is said that karate begins and ends with respect - indeed, ‘Respect Others’ is part of our Dojo Kun. If you have further questions regarding Shotokan karate, perhaps there’s a dojo in your area? Wikipedia says that between 50 and 100 million people practice karate worldwide...
@SavedSnake6 жыл бұрын
M Cron ..did you just insult me?
@mcronrn6 жыл бұрын
KENSHI TORAOKAMI Ah, it appears that I was unclear... Well, Kenshi, you asked a question that was clearly evident by -watching the video-. It occurs to me now that you may be watching KZbin on a Soviet-era black-and-white TV. That of course would explain your question, since all dark colors might look black. If that is the case, you might mention that in your question, so as not to inadvertently cause offense... But if your vision is ok, and if you are using a device that differentiates colors, then that might suggest that your question was um, rhetorical. That is to say, you weren’t questioning the color of the belts the karateka were wearing - you were questioning the propriety of them wearing the color. If that was the case, if you were indeed calling into question the efforts expended and the recognition received of those whom you do not know, that might be considered disrespectful. Hence my explanation of the role of respect (REI) in Shotokan karate. I hope that explains the rationale behind my above comment. How you receive it is up to you.

Kagawa Sensei, arguably the preeminent practitioner of Shotokan karate in world, doesn’t seem to feel disrespected....
@BelloBudo0076 жыл бұрын
I think you could be correct. I've noticed many people, with foot or perhaps other problems, opt to carry special 'dedicated' footwear with them in their kit bag [JKA's Sensei Stan Schmidt being an example]. It may look strange at first but if it comes down to giving away karate or wearing footwear, I know which one I would opt for. Also the lady appears to be Japanese, which adds even more weight to the medical reason.

sorry but where is this explanation of all those techniques? he would be great instructor if he would know applications after those techniques he is teaching but it looks like he doesn't know the meaning of those techniques because when you really teach kata applications not just "monkey see monkey do", it's not how kata should be taught
@ShotokanKaratePage6 жыл бұрын
that would be another lesson. This was demonstrating the actual kata, not application. Kagawa is Bassai Dai !
@adammills97156 жыл бұрын
Lesski Sam Yeah agreed. I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt and think that practical application was a prime focus and we just didn't get to see it in this clip by coincidence. But unfortunately that's not usually the case.
@ShotokanKaratePage6 жыл бұрын
in other lessons Sensei does run through the application. on this occasion he just ran through the kata technique only. after a 3 hour lesson , plenty to cover on this visit. thanks
