I am a Shodan in Shotokan and totally agree. This kata is far too advanced to learn for anyone at a kyu level. I have been training for over 10 years and still wont go near this kata. To the beginners eye it may look simple and do-able, but there are so many subtle details that have to be appreciated that you can only understand if you train properly ie: stick to the Heian Katas for now. As a white belt heian shodan and nidan should be done 1000 times till they are finally understood. Osu.

@@ioana.pre2uIm with you, man. I’m orange belt too, Shotokai practicioner, and our Sensei doesn’t give a crap about our kyu level: everyone MUST learn this kata. Nice and fast, cause the next one in line is Bassi Sho. We practice Meikyou three times each class, all together, and I’m able to do it myself.

Doesn't this apply to every Kata? One may learn the sequence at any given level, but the nuances and details can be discovered as a much higher level. I'm curious, can you provide a few examples of the difficulties you were talking about? I learned it as a 6th Kyu and loved it right away, now I'm 3rd Kyu and discovering a few new things in it. I'd like to learn more about it. 😊

I agree. At brown belt and black belt levels, explosiveness should be sought after in Heian Shodan. And at these advanced levels, timing should be heavily emphasized here as well. (e.g. when the fist should actually begin to move in relation to the beginning of hip rotation, and in relation to the beginning of the foot movement) There's also the bunkai of course. In bunkai, there's more than just the basic count techniques. The transitional moves have their uses too. …. There's a lot going on in Heian Shodan.

I learned Shotakan katas all the way to Gangaku. Even before I joined a school. 1984. I was training JKD and Pukalan. Soft Styles. I started training Shotokan because I went to a tournament and they didn't like my fast flashy kicks and strikes. They said no power. Which was bullshit. So on the way home I picked up a Black Belt mag. On the cover was Frank Smith. 5th Dan JKA. He got this guy bent in half with a front thrust kick. And the article was about creating power from your heel to strike. So I got Sensei Funakoshi book Karate do Kyuhan. And just started training. And fell in love with the structure and fundamental of Shotokan. The katas are such a great training tool. After finaly joining a school in 86 in Santa Rosa. Went for my 1st Dan test in 90. And who did the test? Frank Smith 5th Dan JKA. He fluked me for wobbly Kiba Dach. I'm very tall. And he was correct. That's when I started doing kata with 70lb barbells on my shoulder. That was 40 years ago. I still do that especially with kiba dach. Now at 2nd Dan. Coming off knee replacement it's been a slow progression of getting back to Gangaku. My 2nd Dan Kata. Never did MIEKYO. But really looks like a great kata to learn. Stay tuned.

@FlipUltraHD Yes it does start similar to Taikyoku Shodan, but that should be expected to some degree. All advanced kata and technique are rooted in the basics of the system in question. That's the one commonality in all of karate, or martial arts for that matter.

I say this with total respect for Kanazawa Sensei. His performance is a little changed from original JKA version. His- #11 & #13 move is a middle outside block as apposed to a down block in JkA. His #19 moves are up block instead of middle blocks in JKA. I'm just wondering, did he change for his organization, as all the other JKA Masters teach the JKA version I suggested here.

@TheJonBoy72 Yes, as head of ISKF he made changes in certain kata, as well as developed kata of his own. Azai Sensei, on the other hand, kept the 26 kata the same, but implemented a whole new style with over 60 kata. Couldn't do that if they were still under JKA. They pretty much stick to the script passed down by Gichin Funakoshi and his son Gigo.

Have fun.

@karatefella its never to early to learn kata, if his sensei wants him to learn it than by all means he should learn it! im an orange belt but i practice karate everyday for at least an hour out side of normal dojo hours. ofcourse i know heian shodan, nidan, sandan and yondan. but look at tekki it has no technical reference to any other of the kata families so why not learn it right away. im currently practicing kanku dai and our neighboring goju-ryu dojo's sensei has offered to teach me seipai!
@shotoman3005 жыл бұрын
The reason tekki is taught later after the heians is because until you build the hips thru the heians you cant make the vibration hip tekki requires to make power without rotation. You would just be going thru the movements with no power or focus if it were taught too soon. Karate is a step by step process and the great masters that left it to us had a pretty good idea of what they were doing when they laid out the curriculum.
@deosullivan313 жыл бұрын
@chiluzzdia I'm a black belt in Shotokan, and I disagree. The kata are ordered for a reason: they build on each other and increase in difficulty. All of the Heians come out of Kanku Dai, which is why they are learned first and Kanku Dai is often the last kata before black belt. I admire your passion for karate-do, but remember patience: karate-do, as Funakoshi O Sensei taught, is a pursuit of a lifetime.
@Nacho_Ferrari8 ай бұрын
So what? Why someone at a kyu level can’t practice advanced katas? My Sensei teach them all to us, no discrimination for belt color, and I appreciate his opinion and effort. Practice, not facing an exam. All katas can be practiced by anyone. Is not like you have to level up to unlock a kata…

Actually I don't see the issue of a green belt learning advanced kata. Learning different kata may give them greater insights into their karate. Their understanding will evolve with time. And some students may have had different style backgrounds too, so their 'maturity' may be of a different level than some. Age too may give better perspective.

It depends on the progress order. Some dojos teach the Taikyoku katas first. In My dojo, you learn Takyioku shodan, nidan, sandan and yondan, then progress with the Heian katas, then comes Bassai-Sho, Kanku-sho, Bassai-dai, Kanku-Dai, Enpi, Jion, Jiin, Jitte, Gojushiho-sho, Gojushiho-dai, Unsu and then you begin the unique named katas like Gankaku, Hangetsu, Meikyo, Sochin, Chinte, Nijushiho. The Unique-named katas are not done in this order, it depends on the quarter-progress plans the Shihan made. Then 3 Tekki-katas are taught almost exclusively for the belt exams at our Dojo. It varies. Some dojos just locally teach it differently again in terms of order and belt requirements. It is possible to learn all shotokan katas before the black belt at our Dojo.
