2020 The Year of Silence: During this dreadful year of silence I hope to bring you some interesting and notable recordings which have not previously been published on this channel.
Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band play their Elspeth Campbell MSR in the Grade 1 and 2 competition at the 23rd North Berwick International Highland Games on Saturday 11 August 2018. This is the first recording on this channel of this MSR set played by Shotts.
The tunes are:
March: Miss Elspeth Campbell [Thomas Douglas]
Strathspey: The Islay Ball [Archie MacNeill (1879 - 1962)]
Reel: Pretty Marion [traditional]
The march here is a relative rarity (this is its third appearance out of 195 MSR's on this channel) but it is a fine listen and the band under Pipe Major Ryan Canning and Lead Drummer Andrew Lawson play it with great style and musicality. We know very little about the composer, Thomas Douglas, other than he was born in Cowal. The tune is well known as a fiddle tune.
We know more about The Honorable Lady Elspeth Campbell, daughter of Lord Archibald Campbell, and a fine piper and founder member (and only lady member) of the Piobaireachd Society in 1902. You can read more about her at bit.ly/3waOANC.
