Those are really interesting points, about how too much detail makes a picture less picturesque, how leaving a painting a little unfinished makes it more lively, how you can subtly change colors and tones, and making the picture half abstract. Painting more abstract, especially in the beginning. Play with colors. You don't have to paint exactly what you see. Paint what you feel more. Really, really brilliant video. Also, your ability to get a likeness of a portrait is amazing. It seems like you barely try and it comes out automatically looking just like them. Great work.

I love your videos and I love your technique in this video very useful tips especially with using the pallet knife! You are a master at what you do and I understand where your coming from when you say it’s not a good idea to paint in detail from a photo I generally can’t help myself when it comes to detail (I am a Virgo) but I am now only just beginning to steer away from that by creating my own style...I am currently looking for an oil class as I’ve never worked with oils before I love the way you can move the paint ‘sculpture like’ on the canvas......no other paint can do that! Thank you Sergey 😍🙏

Another excellent tutorial by Sergey Gusev! Beginners should keep in mind that painting thick can be very expensive so only use inexpensive paints when trying this. If you don't like your first results just scrape the excess paint off with your knife and lint free rag and either start again immediately or let it dry and you have a very well primed canvas for another portrait that will be neutral in color.

Quick tip - mix all the paints that you see on the still life on your pallet. This should take the longest. What ever color you see, mix that as a small little pool on your pallet. When you feel ready, start applying the darker colors where you see them, and last will be the light colors. Use yellow to make things lighter and Burnt umber or blue to make things darker - try not to use white or black as much. Start with a very small canvas and work your way up. Good luck

Why would you? Machines can and will do that and call it art . Take a damned photo if you want an image of what you see! What you see isn't particularly interesting it's already complete. No great artist of the past ever did that. One of the reasons image makers like to argue that what you see is a valid subject just as it is is to justify the use of projectors and other technological crutches in their process. No imagination = no artist. Painting what you see and calling yourself an "artist" is analogous to a court reporter saying that they're a crime writer!
