I agree re slowing the process to help with letter recognition (& esp cursive) When I show my grandchild cursive handwriting of historical documents, records etc, presently (noting she is now in grade 3) she has no hope of reading it! So in my view, we ought to continue teaching kids this skill for all of the obvious reasons, but also in future to be able to read very old documents. Handwriting can also tell us more information about the author who wrote a document, hence the skill should not be lost.
