Well, Jesus did drink wine. I think its OK to abstain from things that you find unhealthy, but I dislike bringing it so close to morality. If you feel proud that you're "pure" because you don't partake in unhealthy things, to me, thats more of a sin than having a drink or a cigar once in a while. There's a thin line between having higer standards for yourself out of humility, or out of a sense of superiority.

@Davidson 1 your argument takes the sanctity and freedom away from the human soul. I agree a balance for each individual must be found. Sometimes this balance is zero for those with addict personalities. But for the majority its not. God gave us this earth. Praise God for tobacco and alcohol

My church has a men's meeting on a weekday evening every week. There is food and drink, adult beverages if you will, and cigars. Our priest is present and partakes with us. It is one of the things I most look forward to each week. I have found the fellowship shared at these meetings makes our church family stronger. It is also a great way to engage new men into our church and fellowship. In this context the practice is a positive.

Another reason perhaps for using wine, rather than water, 2,000 years ago could be because water could probably be more contaminated compared to wine, at that time. I would think that water back then was not as hygienic as wine perhaps.
@TychoTV
@TychoTV Жыл бұрын
@@Picklespit Wine is the beverage of choice during celebrations in many cultures, which is why alcohol is served at parties. But there is a difference between enjoying alcohol in a social setting, and getting plastered at the open bar. Non-alcoholic fruit juice-based beverages were already available at that time, but they don't stay fresh for long, sometimes eventually fermenting into alcohol. So, it would have been a logistical nightmare to serve them as beverage in huge gatherings. A follow-up question would be, "Why are there jugs of water in an event (i.e., the wedding) where wine is going to be the beverage of choice?" The answer is that the water was used by wedding guests for ritual washing - a habit practiced by other faiths and cultures as well.

Most honest and simple video I’ve seen on KZbin in a long time. Just turned 21 and tried my first cigar. I’ve been questioning myself if this is okay to do as a Christian. I can say that cigars are such a different product than the rest, bringing you a sense of calmness and celebration at the same time. I believe in my heart and spirit that gods gifts are given for a reason. These gifts are a form of power and it is up to the person who opens his gifts to decide if they will use it for good or for evil. Satan perverts the blessings and gifts god has given to man.

Following your thought process: if tobacco has not affected you and you are not an addict, then every other action, as far as doesn't cause damage in others and you are not addict, would be acceptable as well. I feel like there is a hypocrisy on these discourses.

Father Gregory PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do a video on the morality of psychedelics and hallucinogenics. There are arguments that drugs like mushrooms such as psilocybin can be used to treat post traumatic stress disorder with veterans or even anxiety, so the same way that opioids can be taken sinfully and therapeutically, does this argument work with those aforementioned substances? Furthermore the morality of taking thinks like DMT or ayahuasca would be great too. Thanks and God bless!

In medicine, they use these numbing effects for pain control and the high/stone effects are removed. For your information, using drug as a goal to get high is not acceptable in the Catholic Church because it alters reality and mental state which lead to permanent damage on the user mental health if prolong use or one-time sexual encounter along with using the drug can cause permanent scar. I was prescribed those drugs with opioid and cocaine and did not get high, so I know the effects are removed but the pain control is retained. I think you want to use the drug and want the priest to confirm in your belief. All these drugs are illegal by most conventional law in the whole world.

Catechism of the Catholic Church #2291: The use of drugs inflicts very grave damage on human health and life. Their use, except on strictly therapeutic grounds, is a grave offense. @marcondespaulo

I wouldn't say it's because it "alters the mind", but in a more proximal sense it dulls the conscience, in a sense making us less human. I liken the conscience to the soul talking to the body. And since we are in a self-deprived state of conscience, I'd say we are culpable of the sins we commit during that time. That has temporal and eternal consequences, such as psychological or psychiatrical problems that can have other lasting consequences.
@manny4012
@manny4012 Жыл бұрын
@@marcondespaulo Don’t take this the wrong way but now I feel like you’re adding more criterias. So now I ask. Is it the dulling of the conscious that makes it unacceptable? Though I get that point. You and me both know of other legal substances that do that to a certain degree. Even alcohol, when consumed at a minimal amount, can make us “less human” and it has some effect on the brain. I think you would need to have a strong foundational criteria and draw the line as to when and at what point it’s unacceptable and I think that’s a hard task. As a response for your second part any sins committed during a state of diminished moral consciousness are sinful obviously regardless of whether you are in that state of mind or not. I don’t think the reason you gave is a good one given that it can be applied to any other substances we consume.

My reasoning for smoking cigars is the following: 1.- It’s a calculated risk, it affects areas that are more easily detectable and treatable and I have checked my lungs to ensure they haven’t been severely affected 2.- It doesn’t take me away from reality, in fact it slows everything down and make me face it in a calm and introspective way 3.- I make sure I’m not addicted to it, I don’t need it and in times I have gone for over 6 months without one ***Bonus: I enjoy smoking cigars. For instance, I practice Enduro MTB and I have been injured since it’s a high risk sport. I could do spinning in a gym instead, but I don’t enjoy it. It would be safer, but it would also take away big joyful rides of my life and enduring pain makes me resilient. For me going for security obsessively is a way I wouldn’t like to live my life. I try to calculate the risks I take, but still enjoy the time God has given me here. Our bodies are a temple and I know it, but joy should be part of every temple. A temple shouldn’t be deprived of joy.

Secondhand smoke from cigars contains as much carcinogens as cigarettes (some studies say more), which causes health problems in children and pregnant women. Also, apparently there is a thing called “third hand” smoke which I only recently learned about.

Thank you, Father, for such an informative video. In the 60s, when I was an altar boy, my father was called to the rectory for an electrical problem. We had to go down to the basement to correct the issue. I noticed a "private area" where our pastor would read and contemplate next Sunday's message. He was the most popular priest our parish ever had. Next to the wall was a stand with about 10 pipes and a small humador of cigars. Dad told me it was his business and I should not discuss it with anyone. I did as I was told, and now that I am much older, almost 80 now, I am happy that he enjoyed his pipe and cigars. I am amazed that the commentators here are all over the place. 💨💨

I see a lot of debate about what substance or activities are sinful and what are fine. The truth is, more important that debating what specific thing is sinful we need to be honest with ourselves about our particular weaknesses. We are quite literally idol making factories. This means anything from cigarettes to alcohol, Marijuana, food, sex (yes even withing marriage) can all be misused. Does it mean they are all inherently bad no not necessarily. What may be my problem ahem (food, particularly sugar) may not be someone else's. Therefore I can't go around telling people who enjoy a little cake once and a while that it's a slippery slope to a bloated life of sin and gluttony. Some may enjoy a small glass of wine every night but that doesn't necessarily mean they are Alcoholics. Where as others might only drink a few times a month but completely overdo it every time. I guess that's how I see all these matters. It starts with personal accountability. If you get busy focusing on what you think others are doing you may let your own faults and addictions get out of hand.

I love good conversation and a good beer as much as the next, but having many family members who have died horrible deaths way before their time due to lung cancer, many never even smoking themselves, just from second hand smoke: I am opposed to smoking because it is more than a personal choice, in most cases.

In my opinion, 'studies' about the longterm illeffects of a consumable substance has little to no place in a moral context. I realize people will say that 'not knowing if something is unhealthy excuses the use, but after it does not', but this is also a very thin Moral perspective. The true moral context should be restricted to the spiritual and subsequent psychological domain. If it may have a deleterious physical effect on ones health decades down the road doesn't make it immoral. If that were the case even being out in the sun without being plastered with sunscreen would be a sin, so stop with the 'studies' already. What really matters is if a substances can be harmful to the human Soul and change one's perception, perspective and values, as well as reducing one's God-given safety net- inhibitions and shame. Substances that do this ARE immoral and dangerous to the soul. Tobacco is NOT among these substances, although alcohol, (like abusing any other substance), can be immorally abused. You did a nice job of threading the needle here on this topic and remained within the Moral domain.

Exposure to the sun and tobacco are two different things and cannot be compared. The sun and its light is God-made and is vital to life. Cancer-causing sunlight is somewhat man-made due to the thinning of the ozone layer caused by human polution. Cigars on the other hand, is man-made. It has ZERO health benefits, in fact it is carcinogenic. God in his intelligence made it that way... because spiritually, it has the same effects. It is an indulgence that leads to other spiritual temptations both for the user and the people around the person seen using it. So if it does not make us holy, causes other to be tempted or sin, and does not help grow the kingdom, it should be done away with.

I have an awful next door neighbour that chainsmokes cigarettes every day. Cigars are not the same as cigarettes as you've explained but the smell is still off-putting. Plus my mom has respirational issues largely due to inhaling 2nd hand cigarette smoke from this inconsiderate neighbour. Sorry to be frank but I think it will be much more difficult to abstain from e.g. masturbation than from smoking cigars. For my part, marijuana is only "bad" because it's been made illegal. Well, in my part of the world, anyway. Consumed with temperance, it's hardly worse than e.g. whisky or calvados. Yes, if you're downing a bottle of scotch every day, there's a problem - if you're every day too drunk to drive safely, there's a problem. But sharing a bottle of port with a good friend on one Saturday a month and having a good chat (the sort of "open-hearted" chat most of us 40+ guys can only have after a few drinks), where's the harm? Now, I've not had the chance to enjoy the weed, so I might speaking with the lower end of my digestive tract - but is there a big difference? One thing to be stoned every day of the week, but completely different if it's something people do maybe once a month, and then only to a limited extent. Again, I'm comparing it with alcohol - one thing to be skull-drunk every day, and another thing entirely to be tipsy and slightly "loose" one or two Saturdays a month. And - of course - some sort of grayscale between the extremes, there.

Lol incense is burned in temples. Besides, if you're so worried about consuming things that are harmful to your body because your body is a Temple, then you shouldn't cherry pick tobacco. You need to stop stuffing your face with donuts and pizza and stop chugging Sprite.

Okay so, tobacco is right because it's a plant, but Marijuana is not right, even when tobacco ALSO affects the brain. And masturbation is not right even when it's demonstrated that many ejaculations per week helps to avoid some organic problems. Following your thought process: if tobacco has not affected you and you are not an addict, then every other action, as far as doesn't cause damage in others and you are not addict, would be acceptable as well. I feel like there is a hypocrisy on these discourses.

I sin unwillingly every day. I know that I do. I either sin in thought word or deed. What is not of faith is sin. I'm just reminded that I'm still in this body of sin, I'm in this wrestling match between the flesh and spirit. Even though I might, on occasion, have a cigar. I wasn't justified in my flesh but by faith alone in Jesus Christ. Could I live a life 100% consecrated to God? No, the sinless Son of God, Jesus Christ, had accomplished that. So, how should I, as a Christian, should then live? I believe that I, as a Christian, should know that I've been saved, justified by faith in Jesus Christ in accordance to 1Cor.15:1-4; Eph.2:8,9, Eph.1:13, KJV. In my flesh, I serve sin and know the difference. Some sins are detestable to me. There are some sins I wouldn't tell my mother about. There are sins that I will never let go of. I'm not justified and on my way to heaven because of some I have done, not doing, or about to do. I'm justified by placing my faith totally in what Christ did for me at the cross for my salvation and eternal life.
