However, we were bought with the blood of Christ! Thus our body is not, our own! A body, a living holy temple we are to be! So if God wanted us to have something on our skin, He would have put it there! One tattoo can lead to many others! Then to regret it!

As a man who some would consider more heavily tattooed, and is currently finishing up a reformation themed sleeve, I appreciate this and the wisdom and insight you conveyed in this video
@elijahhawkins5213 күн бұрын
For context: I do have tattoos. My convictions have grown in regards to this topic and from my perspective now for me, emphasis on FOR ME, it would be an attempt to worship God in the same way the idolaters worship their false gods. Some would burn their child and some would cut themselves like what happened on Mt. Carmel and now I see for me getting tattoos (even if they appear to be something in reference to the One True God or His Word) as a way of cutting to worship. Again this is a conviction for me and my soul and I’m not condemning anyone who has them nor saying that it is a sin for everyone

I am not saying they are sinful or trying to make a rule where there isn't one, but even from a maturity and wisdom standpoint I think a valid question to ask is why do you want the tattoo, and to really give an honest answer from the surface to the root. It is usually because you think they look cool, it makes you look more like the person or group you wish you were more like which is usually a sinful, vain, pride thing, or the answer comes across as an attempt to justify doing it, which is interesting as it shows the nature of the position, and usually there isn't an actual reason. It's usually to communicate something about a personality, to come across to someone else to give them the impression you are a certain way. Sometimes a believer will have a reason along the lines of it being a conversation starter for the Gospel. Ok, but can you do that right now and are not, just like the person who wants to go on a mission to share the Gospel but doesn't where they are right now? Further, to ask if there has ever been something you wanted that you later got tired of or no longer wanted or changed your mind about. Tattoos are permanent (sure, there is tattoo removal, but that is also expensive, can be unsuccessful or doesn't actually remove all trace, and like the tattoo is damaging to the skin) and they have their root in pagan identification (i assume based on the history i understand). So what is the good reason? I'm not saying there isn't a good reason, and i dont know if there even needs to be, but shouldn't there be? I think it should fall down to whose glory are you seeking by getting one. Are we stewarding what we've been given wisely? And i think we should ask ourselves the same questions for all things we do/buy, including what we wear, our haircut, our jewelry (including watches (ouch me)), cars, etc. What witness are we giving by doing/wearing/buying/showing it? Unlike those other things where you can stop wearing it, sell it, whatever, you cannot just stop wearing your tattoo. And unlike those other things that are universally necessary/helpful, a tattoo is not, it is a statement, an aesthetic body modification, a customization, a billboard. Will I think any different about a brother or sister with one or who wants one? I hope not and it would be sin if I did.

Tattoos are a sin, no matter how much one can justify it, no matter what the marking is. Something is either a sin or not, there's no in between. You are right when you say the word says we should not mark our bodies, and remember God's word does not change because you want to tattoo your body and put a cross. what you are saying is more like, yes lying is a sin, but if it's a lie that can save a life then it's not a sin or yes lying is a sin but 'white lies' are not so much a sin because they are harmless and with no bad intensions, therefore they are not sin... sin is sin, disobedience is disobedience. please let us remember there is no conditions sin, is it either a sin or not, you are either cold or hot, either obedience or not.

The action of tattoos is clearly not holy but rather worldly. The reason there is even a question tells you it’s not wise. This is the fault of the western culture we’re focused on rights instead of the right thing to do. The practice of rationalizing those behavior isn’t strengthening our culture. In what way could a tattoo bring honor and glory to our God if we're called image barrers of God. Why change what God has created in his image? Why wouldn't He have created your body in a more God honoring way from the get go? Buy a Bible if you care about scripture on your skin, I can't see how anyone would be able to justify his of her tattoo with scripture. If you want people to see you're a godly person, let them know by your fruits, by your good deeds or just by your preaching of Christ.

One of the things I don't see mentioned in the comments is what kind of place do you go to get a tattoo? Imo tattoo parlors are worldly, with who knows what ungodly environment and pics on the wall or tattoo ideas to choose from. I understand those who have them before becoming a believer, but when i see someone with one, i automatically think of the world without even actually fully seeing if it's a godly image or not. The Bible speaks a lot of being clean and pure and it makes someone look unclean or dirty. I also agree that its permanent and we all have different seasons in life. Sanctification is an ongoing process. Things I felt at liberty to do in earlier seasons in my christian life are no longer things I feel at liberty to partake of now. Imo it's a much wiser decision to not get one due to not being able to go back. The scarring is always there. But there is much grace for those who did it unknowingly.

Romans 12:1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice-the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. God only accepted sacrifices in the Old Testament without spot or blemish. So to present yourself to god a living sacrifice that means outwardly without spot or blemish is to present your body holy to god.

In Leviticus the Bible says “You shall not make any cuts in your body for the dead nor make ant tattoo marks on yourselves; I am the Lord”. That settles it, no tattoos. That is not legalistic. If you get tattoos before becoming a Christian, then yes ask for forgiveness and the Lord will forgive you but if it is done afterwards then that is intentional sin. You are attempting to bend sin to fit a certain narrative and that is wrong and you could be a stumbling block.

My view is this. Do we have the moral right to mar the image of God, if we are the temple of God. 1Cor 3 and 6. would our Holy God mind at all if we graffiti His temple in Jerusalem in ancient days, remember Aaron's son's who went in to the Tent of meetings and offered strange 🔥, Leviticus 🔟. I don't think we have that right, anymore then a woman who thinks that she has the moral rights to an abortion.
