JJ REDICK IS RIGHT..ROLE IS WHAT A PLAYER DOES FOR THE TEAM WHEN THEY COME ON THE COURT..D LO DOES THE SAME THINGS ON THE COURT NO MATTER WHEN YOU ARE ON THE COURT...D ANGELO IS A PLAYMAKER, SCORER AND SHOOTER..WHEN HE COMES OF THE BENCH, IT ALLOWS HIM TO DO HIS ROLE MORE BECAUSE THERE IS NOT ENOUGH ROOM TO DO HIS ENTIRE ROLE IN THE STARTING LINE UP..COMING FROM THE BENCH HE CAN PLAY MORE FREE
@Murali_bala1312 сағат бұрын
Andy and Brian, I appreciate this fresh new age thinking of JJ, where roles that peg you to contribute in the best interest of the team is what is needed and he makes no bones about it... I think he is being boldly transparaent and not facetious as you think. I also really hate this anachronistic thinking that "I'm a starter" vs "I'm coming off the bench" is an entitlement based on "my history as a player or my pay" is actually BS.... To me there are 2 categories of players in the NBA... The stars who always start (1-3) and the role players(4-9) who are plugged into lineups that makes sense for the team and maximizes their talents. The better the role players embrace their roles, the more the minutes as simple as that... Right off the bat let me also tell you at this point DLo whether he realizes it or not, is not a starting pg on any of the 30 teams in the league ... Infact he opted in only cuz his best chance to "start" was with the Lakers.... where he thinks he can best showcase his skills for his next contract. Actually, DLo should bow down to his knees and thank JJ for moving him to the bench esp now that he has more naturally higher usage rates, the primary ball handler, scorer and playmaker on lineups that best utilizes him. I was saying this from the offseason that the Lakers best interest and infact DLo's best interest is to have him come off the bench where he is pitted against inferior offensive players, more freedom on offense and by subtraction makes the starting lineup a more defensively balanced one. I agree with JJ, lineup decisions driven by floor balance, matchups and best production for the team should supersede any perception of pedigree or this useless perception of entitlement..... Infact I'll go one step further, If DLo does well in his bench role, the Lakers can even look to extend him on a good contract at a healthy TPMLE salary of 12-13M$ a yr pay, cuz as a bench player with DLo's skills are rare and he should embrace it and gun for 6th man of the year....

No doubt. We've both said D'Lo could flourish in this role and if you recall, I recently said during a show that he may be less tradable (from the Lakers’ perspective, in terms of expendability) for the Lakers since becoming a 6th Man. Someone needs to do this, even in the playoffs, and for the time being, he's by far the best candidate. The skillset can't be traded away without a comparable replacement. Appreciate you watching. AK

@@LockedOnLakers True.... I agree with you guys that the incessant chatter about DLo being a trade asset and his perception outside the Laker roster actually devalues what he actually does for the Lakers. As a 6th man all of a sudden, DLo is a top bench player in the league and even in the playoffs where he can be a situational spark.. I hope he embraces this new role and makes it his niche which could augur well for his next contract. Based on the Dennis Schroeder experience earlier, DLo hopefully sees that PGs tend to overvalue themselves.

For me the jury is still out on Knecht’s defense skills…. In this early point we’ve seen some obvious rookie mistakes And some flashes of a very good defender… his body language and attitude toward defense is very promising 💪🏽. He seems to be trying very hard, and I expect with time for him to be at least good. And as a side note AR has also improved 👏🏽

It’s no mystery, Dalton Knecht doesn’t have enough athleticism and quick foot speed on defense to play the 2-Guard position, so they got Dalton at Small Forward where he is less of a defensive liability than against guards.

@LockedOnLakers8 сағат бұрын
Actually, JJ did *the opposite* of give a straight forward answer to the question I asked… which was did you talk with DLo before the season began about the possibility of coming off the bench, just to prepare him in case it happened? Rather than say he did or didn’t talk about it with DLo ahead of time, he instead focused on the semantics of me using the word “role” to broadly describe everyone, not even specifically DLo. Which, like I said, is fine. This is JJ’s thing, and I don’t mind it as long as he doesn’t become an a-hole about it. (Which, to be clear, I don’t think he’s even close to doing.) But in reality he did anything but just answer a direct question..: that was actually a pretty innocuous direct question. AK
@LockedOnLakers8 сағат бұрын
@@jamiethorpe5431What narrative driven question was I asking? For real? My question implied nothing about DLo being upset, or anything hinting at future drama. (For that matter, neither Brian nor I have ever said we expect this to blow up into something big.) I cannot speak for everyone in the media, but the reason I specifically asked JJ about this was not only straightforward, but set up in my question. Most players who consider themselves starters (and I know for a fact DLo considers himself one) don’t like having to move to the bench. We also know DLo didn’t like his brief move to the bench last year. JJ also said he spoke a lot with the players before the season began about their roles, how they could be used, what he wanted from them, etc. As such, I wanted to know if it was a scenario they talked about just to prevent DLo from feeling blindsided, which matters. And there you have it. There was nothing sneaky or “hidden agenda” to my question. If anything, I was pretty explicit about why I asked in the first place. Appreciate you watching. AK

Dlos role literally hasn’t changed . He is still being asked to run the offense and provide floor spacing .. you just used the incorrect term lol his role is the same for this team whether he is coming off the bench or starting .His minutes may change but not his role . It’s not semantics
@LockedOnLakers6 сағат бұрын
Except that's not accurate at all. DLo's role has changed a lot since moving the bench regarding how he fills it. The ball is in his hands more often than when he was starting. He's able to run pick and roll more often, which is more directly tailored to his skillset. (JJ has acknowledged this uptick, and how it wasn't really possible when DLo was with the full starting five more.) His amount of shots per 36 minutes is up considerably. He has far more control and agency over the offense as a 6th man than he did If you're describing D'Lo's role in the most literal way, (i.e., semantics), then yes, his role hasn't changed. But if you're describing what's actually happening on the court, his role has in fact changed. He's being used differently. And that's before, by the way, the question of whether DLO THINKS his role has changed... which he clearly does. The guy literally said he's sacrificing now. If nothing changed, there would be nothing to sacrifice. I mean, it's all right there in front of us. We can be honest about this. Appreciate you watching. AK

Edit: On JJ’s answers concerning D’Lo: - He’s sticking up for D’Lo. Something that D’Lo’s never had in a coach. He wants to make sure he knows that he’s on his side which I think is good. On D’Lo’s answers about sacrifice: I think he’s acutely aware of his perception around his attitude and how unfortunately his words have been twisted to make him sound like a selfish player, so I think he’s trying to pick his words carefully. For example, let’s say he gave you a specific answer like “sacrificing shots”, even though that’s an innocuous/standard answer in and of itself, if somebody puts that in an article, he’s not confident that it’ll be framed correctly because it hasn’t been in times passed. And the fans would 100% take that narrative and run with it again, because they have. Fans are already conspiring that D’Lo is trying to keep the ball away from Knecht. And this is not to say that you specifically were doing that but, I just think he’s a little skiddish with the media at this point overall.

I disagree. Yes, winning is the ultimate goal, but this is also D'Lo's career. It's how he earns a living. Whether or not JJ (or whoever) wants to admit this, there is a status that comes with starting, which can shape your market value. D'Lo is in a contract year and has recently experienced a soft market for his services. He has every right to care about how this sacrifice of status (if nothing else) could adversely affect his market value this offseason. Personally, I think thriving in this role will enhance his offers, but I also can't say for certain that happens. Either way, this isn't a pure ego thing for D'Lo. (Even if ego likely is a factor on some level.) As such, I have zero issues with D'Lo viewing this bench role as a sacrifice of sorts. Appreciate you watching. AK

@LockedOnLakers the fact he was unwilling to make the sacrifices required to win is the main reason he doesn't have a marked because we all know he was always a skilled player. Thank you…we gotta stop scapegoating Dlo. He was bad but in the playoffs two seasons ago for sure, so was the entire team. He bailed us so many times last season and has hit big shots this season already. He also has no trade value so to gut the team chemistry for a small move makes zero sense. I love Shroeder but let’s not forget he went scoreless in playoff games as well and was an absolute liability against Denver as well. We should have Shroeder instead of Gabe though.

D-Lo, as frustrating as he is, serves a real purpose on this team. His shooting and playmaking off the bench is really helpful for some of our young guys like Max and Koloko. Also JJ is a first time head coach. I would be careful about making too many changes to the roster cause that’s just additional work for him to adapt to new players and their personalities and skillsets.
