Pro Staffer Daniel Stefanoff has a hunting property in Oklahoma where the native habitat is low quality. He's worked to improve the native habitat, established food plots and is now seeing some nice bucks! With more deer using the farm, Daniel knew it was time to take out some does and work toward balancing the number of deer (mouths) with the amount of quality forage on the farm. Watch the hunt and Grant's explanation on how to tell when it's time to harvest does.

At GrowingDeer.tv we're all about showing hunters what we are doing each week in the field as we work on our Proving Grounds and others to have better deer hunting! If The hunting strategies and techniques we show can be used if you are hunting public or private land. Our farm has wild, free-ranging deer. If we can grow big antlers on these tough Ozark Mountain bucks, you can too! Good wildlife management tactics, deer management, and food plots with regenerative ag techniques that build better soils! Thank you Dr. Woods for posting this one. Very few hunters I visit with understand the importance of a balanced deer herd with their habitat. Out here in west Texas, if you don't, your herd can get in trouble in a hurry. I have seen it several times, and it is not something you want to see...

I’ve been managing my farm for 18 years with the guidance of Mr Woods videos. When someone asks me if it’s better to harvest older or younger does, I revert back to something Grant said in a video years ago.. “The best doe to harvest, is the first one that gives you the opportunity “..

I've always liked to harvest does all season. So far no luck. I have a small 44 acre property, and we've had a very wet year, approaching 100 inches of rain since January 2020. Between flooded river/creek bottoms, to wet growing conditions for my food plots, I'm not seeing the deer I normally do. But I'm not getting discouraged, this is part of loving the outdoors and recognizing the blessings I have to have my own place, small as it may be, and to have health and family to work this and enjoy my efforts with! We may not tag as many deer this year, but considering the year many people have had, I know how blessed I am! God is good! Even when life throws challenges great and small our way! Great video! Great message!

@@GrowingDeerTV I live up in the panhandle, only about 30 mins south of Alabama. Panthers are only a legend here. We are growing a sizable population of black bears, the state did away with the season a long time ago. So now bears roam unchecked. We also have a large population of coyotes. I’m sure between coyotes and bears, plenty of deer get picked off but I still think the main cause of death rides on 4 wheels down the highway.

I hate to break it to you but this is a matter of opinion because it totally depends on the deer population density per area. I'm with you on harvesting Does but this year I will be letting my Ohio doe permit slide and as a PA resident, if I had a PA doe tag I'd be using it. Northeast Ohio deer numbers are down. I spent countless hours in the Ohio woods after quickly harvesting my PA buck. With good observation I've decided it would be better for me not to fill my third tag which is an Ohio doe management permit. The deer numbers are just not there on public land in NE Ohio and the number of hunters in north East Ohio is out of this world. Ohio is in great need of revising there permit system.

@J-Brown Adventures I guess I’m still not being clear enough like page 55 there’s those zones where it caps you out, technically speaking if you live in what zones 2,7 and 8 you can have a total of 8 deer including the holiday anltlerless season but the cross timbers section like he’s talking about which is zones 5,6,9 and maybe parts of 2(I don’t hunt up there so I don’t know the land) capped out at 2 antlerless. Which is the way my game warden neighbor explained it to me years ago because of their studies.

I am tired of all these so called experts telling everyone to shoot does without going over all of the caveats. My club did it without a true professional opinion based on our property, and all we ended up with was bad hunting and a bunch of gay bucks. Via camera survey we had 2-3 bucks for every doe after only two years of blasting away at does. Our deer sightings went from seeing 1-4 deer almost every hunt to seeing 10 or less deer per season per hunter the third year. Our bucks vanished onto the neighbors during the rut which we learned from them no longer being on camera and gun fire across the border. We didn't kill a singe mature buck for 3 years. We had to go to a 4 doe limit on a 1000 acre club with 12 members to bring the herd back. We didn't consider predation on fawns, natural death of deer and fawns, nor did we consider our own landscape. We just waxed the does because we figured we had too many and all the TV people spout off about today is killing does to improve things. In regality we never had too many does in the first place. It took 4 years of 4 does to correct the issue.

CJR - As I explained this this and other videos, doe harvest should be based on the amount of quality forage available, especially during the late summer and late winter. If there's not enough forage for the local deer population during the stress periods, then does need to be harvested. Gay bucks. Come on. In addition, lots of research shows that bucks don't leave their home range just to seek does. Survival is the primary objective of deer and they know the risky and safe areas best in their home range.

@@GrowingDeerTV I hear you, but 95% of hunters out there don't know how to determine that. I didn't really mean the bucks were actually gay, LOL. Although I thought is saw some sparkly lights and heard bass thumps coming from the woods one late night at the camp fire. It takes a very well-trained eye to be able to tell how much forge there is and how much deer that forge can sustain. A decision like that needs to be left up to a professional. I never hear that from "experts" making videos on the subject. The variables are never discussed: how big is your property, what are the neighbors are doing, what is the predator situation, what is the latitude, rate of natural disasters, and so on... The issue is too nuansed to put into a short video. Via a state study my area was found to have a lowly 15-23% fawn survival rate due to predation from black bear, coyote, bobcat, and wild hogs. The worst thing we could have done was kill all those does. The club I spoke of used to be in a state doe program where a biologist would come out and tell you how many does should be killed and issue tags. He understood the area. Well, they were not issuing enough tags according to the founding members whose minds were polluted by TV shows. They knew better than the biologists. The state program was dropped, the does got slaughtered, and no monsters appeared as the horn porn television programs preached. Lesson learned. I killed one good deer after our problem was corrected and got out along with a few others. The greed of the founding members became too great to bear as more mature deer showed up in daylight. All in the name of horns friendships were lost, traditions were ended, and more hunters were displaced. Good job deer industry.

Actually I think that's a pretty good pattern for that tree. It looks bright to us but to a deer that sees mostly black and white he blends right in with the shapes of the tree

Non hunters and anti hunters need to watch this. Understanding the role that hunters play in the management and well being of wildlife far surpasses screaming crying bleeding hearts who support PETA and their veiled evil agenda.
