Reyna does need minutes, if it was a last resort a loan would be ok, but really he should look at leaving Dortmund permanently in the summer, I'd like to see him in La Liga at somewhere like Sevilla or Villareal
@AMERICANULTRASTALK10 күн бұрын
La Liga in the summer would be perfect, as long as the club clearly has a plan for him.
@mrmr558010 күн бұрын
@AMERICANULTRASTALK yep, I agree, I just think Reyna's style is very La Liga, you also look at the Sevilla/Villareal squads Reyna should start for them, I mean Villareal will need to move on from Dani Parejo soon (he's 35) and Sevilla, Jesus Navas is ancient at this point and Saul is only on loan they could do with a Gio Reyna, but like you said it depends on what plan the club would have for him, main thing is that he plays a lot more (ideally starts), as an aside I think some MLS clubs should have a look at Saul this summer, I mean if Atletico Madrid don't really want him, why not, Saul is a decent player

Reyna played well vs Barca. He played quickly, often just two touches and sent a through ball or an over-the-top play in for the forwards. The problem was the forwards were always offsides. Not really on Reyna. He did get caught in possession once or twice, but hey this was Barcelona. Is it just me, or could Milan be a good spot for Reyna? I mean, honestly, Milan could afford him, and there isn't a clear 10 there. Pulisic should move back to the wing. Loftus-Cheek should be a rotational player at best. And Reyna sending in those balls we saw him deliver in the Barca game to Leao, Morata, and Pulisic could be fire 🔥

Gio playing in front of Fofana and Reminders would be sweet. Even if Fofana isn’t a true 6. Get Chris back on the wing. But, Gio woukd have defensive/positional duties that I’m not sure he would be super comfortable with.
@t-rey39 күн бұрын
First off, wanna preface this with I agree that he shouldn’t move. Second, I would think a selling team like Dortmund would be willing to cover a bit of his salary if it meant raising his value up. But I think he’ll either find his way back to that super sub role or a rotational starter in the best case scenario
@t-rey39 күн бұрын
On top of that he has a Portuguese passport ( or so I heard) and if he goes to MLS he’d be in preseason for a 3rd of the loan then play a couple months of almost meaningless soccer till he goes back in the summer when the league really steps up
@DeaunPalenshus10 күн бұрын
No to MLS. For now, stay at Dortmund, try to improve his minutes and prove to all that he can stay healthy the remainder of the season. I would like to see him, his dad, agent have a sit down with Poch to get an outside opinion and not just where daddy sees him playing especially after last January’s debacle. I feel bad for Gio with his dad so involved - it doesn’t usually turn out well regardless of the sport. I want Gio to succeed- we need him. There always seems to be a certain spark present when he’s with the USMNT.
@AMERICANULTRASTALK10 күн бұрын
Getting Poch involved is a good idea, I’m sure he’ll have some sort of expectation for the game time that Gio gets. The biggest thing is just staying healthy, which unfortunately he’s never been able to do.

Hearing Donovan tell the story of him downplaying young players aspirations after they told him their dream was to play in Europe was pretty pathetic from him honestly.

Reyna to MLS would be bad for Reyna, good for MLS. I think we might all be making Donovan’s comments more polarizing than they were. He makes a very valid and fact-based point about how Gio would have had 300 matches if he stayed in MLS… assuming he stayed fit for all of those, but it’d be a heck of a lot more than the playing time he’s had in Europe, there’s no dispute there. I think the MLS piece is what people are reacting to. Donovan has a track record of passive-aggressiveness toward US Soccer and has said a number of things that seem to back his own agenda. E.g. the whole supporting Mexico in the 2018 WC, where he was a paid endorser for Wells Fargo… he was financially incentivized to do that. Same with his pro-MLS stance when he was part of the team bidding on a franchise, or trying to get San Diego Loyal going (but failed… maybe some players aren’t good executives?). Even his old teammates criticized him for some of his comments, including the ones about Reyna. Eric Wynalda’s take:”Great if you would stop talking about things you don’t understand. Small fish in the ocean aren’t interested in advice from small fish in a small pond.” Maybe if Gio plays more and Landon talks less, we will all be better off 🤔🤞🏽
@zyzzyx316010 күн бұрын
Dortmud could have at least tied that game. Once Gio was subbed out, Dortmund started playing like CanMNT - no shape, just go direct. I was looking to see whether Marsh was on the sideline. Barca will pumish you for that.
@colinreese10 күн бұрын
Technically, Donovan said playing in MLS for 2-3 years and getting really good and then going to Europe is a smart path. He was talking about people going to bad leagues or bad situations where you won't play. Nothing super crazy about that, and he wasn't talking about Reyna. He just said Reyna would've had 300 games by now assuming he was healthy. Donovan's international play should prove Donovan's ability. I think Dempsey was better, but let's not pretend that Donovan couldn't play against anyone. We've seen Donovan playing against Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Germany, etc. The thing about Donovan is that he literally doesn't give a shit. Notice how he was totally unfazed by people mocking him. He doubled and tripled down.

@history4348710 күн бұрын
Those would be the two I would choose. His pace is a bit too deliberate for Prem or Budesliga, and he can do better than Ligue 1. If no one in Serie A or La Liga wants him, I'd be cool with him going to the Eredevisie as he'd be very good there and will still get better experience than in MLS.

Why do you guys think Landon Donovan thinks Gio should come to MLS? He said "With Gio it's the injuries. Everyone in the locker room says he's the best player on the team." (Paraphrased) They were talking about guys saying "I wanna play in Europe" without specifying where.

He essentially said that Gio should’ve stayed in MLS. If that did happen, he probably wouldn’t even be a solidified national team player, possibly not part of the team at all. Look the lack of chances Diego Luna has gotten.

I find it quite telling that you guys think since you didn't agree with Landon Donovan's take, where he didn't actually say Gio should come to MLS, that you can mock Donovan's physical appearance with your thumbnail. That's pretty par for the course for your generation where you think it's ok to insult and bully people if they have different views than you. It's really, really disturbing.
@yuritussolini13478 күн бұрын
How do I insult or make fun of him? I put a picture of him doing his job in public TV in which he himself felt comfortable enough to show up like that, never did I enter a “haha” or laughing emoji. It’s typical of your generation to read too much into things. Relax, Colin. I for one would actually get the same haircut as Donovan in case I was balding too.

@AMERICANULTRASTALK10 күн бұрын
Obviously minutes are important, that’s why we both said that Gio needs a move in the summer. However, all minutes aren’t created equal. For a player of his quality, game time in MLS, a league that has no real consequences for clubs that are bad and where being good doesn’t even really matter until the end of the season because 60% of teams make the postseason, would not do much if anything at all to help him develop.
