another thing to note, music theory and reading music is quite important for playing in an orchestra, big band, generally playing jazz, writing down music. It will also extremely help translate your skills across instruments, such as knowing theory while playing piano, then picking up guitar or trumpet.

As a music student, I completely agree with what you said at 4:10. Theory was developed as a method of describing, as you said so yourself, and that sentence sums it up nicely. Keep up the good work
@dreamcoma22135 жыл бұрын
Music theory is worth checking out, but it isn't going to solves all your problems. It is useful for communicating with other musicians, but doesn't give you your technique. Technique comes from building muscle memory. Also, unless you get really deep into music theory, I don't think it will really have a large impact on your song writing. Knowing some basic theory is worth it. The same thing with anything, there are diminishing returns. Expanding your chord count is pretty useful, also knowing how to build a chord is good. You can start making your own chords overtime, gives songs a more unique sound.

You pick up basic theory when you play, even if you don't know it, if getting more in-depth interests you it's only going to help to know it, I mean learning different artistic techniques will help any artist, if you are going to paint you learn about how different paints blend, different brushes and strokes, etc, that makes you a better painter and when you stray from the established rules you know what effect you are going for, when I decided I wanted to learn the violin, I became more interested in music theory as well, because it was even more important and a lot of stuff on guitar started making more sense too, then I was able to pick up the mandolin (well it's basically like violin) and ukulele too, even the recorder and a little piano, because I had a better framework!

By learning musoc theory it will allow you to create more complex pieces of music. The more you know the easier it is to apply differnt modes and scales , build different chord voicings on the fly, and all that. That said if you only care about guitar learning your instrument is the most important aspect of music. Then ypu kind of develop an understanding of music theory as it applies to your chosen instrument. Ps i hope ypu learned how to figure out the name lf a chord 2 years later hahahah

So I feel like I'm creative making riffs and stuff but I'm like almost clueless when it comes to chords that should be played after another. This is Me with not knowing music theory, but am only interested in chords because I don't want my creativity to go away with specific scales and such. What should I do.
@thecus82822 жыл бұрын
learn about chord progressions. you'll also have to know about scales. I don't think it'll take away your creativity. it'll just give you a framework to improvise in. and if you want to experiment then you can just ignore the theory and do what you want. Its like giving you a list of ingredients that work well together. it doesn't really limit what you can cook. you're also free to use other stuff if thats what you want
@arc.gouda08 Жыл бұрын
Thecus has it on point. I feel like one of the biggest mental blocks for people in learning music theory is that they think they'll lose their creativity. You won't. In fact, music theory will HELP you. It's like learning a combo in a videogame or, as he said, getting a list of ingredients. You don't HAVE to use a combo, but having that bread-and-butter option expands your repertoire, and doesn't limit you from mixing and matching moves.
@virtualsolitary53173 жыл бұрын
Theory always discouraged me and frustrated me, personally I actually found it better to just spend time with playing he guitar, whether it sounded good or not. Learning each chord and note, and just messing around, I found it to be the best way to play and come up with songs and tunes that just make sense to me. Theory is good to know I think, to expand your knowledge, but spend time with your music and guitar or whatever instrument, and try to convey some feel in whatever way possible. Theory is a good way to knowledge, but just playing and figuring it out is a good way to feel. You pick up a lot of theory by just playing.

In my opinion, if you don't know music theory to some sort of extent, you are not a real musician, and it doesnt matter how good of a player you are. Being a musician is not about knowing to play really good, it's more about understanding what you are doing. I once met a piano player. He was really good, but disn't know what a scale is (yes, true story). He could play classic pieces and stuff really good, he could read sheet, but he didn't understand why it sounded they way it did. So he was basically a Super-Simon player that used the piano. That's the best way I can describe a player who doesn't know what he is doing, hence not a musician.

The level of musical knowledge seen by piano and keyboard players is where guitarists should be. Problem is that guitar is a more difficult instrument for learning theory than the piano.
@okcsticksandkeys Жыл бұрын
"Theory" is NOT "rules." Theory is options. And if someone doesn't want to expand their palette of "options," that's fine BUT, here's the deal: Any time you make a choice of doing this or that a certain way because you think it works better than ANOTHER this or that.......THAT'S THEORY. When you play a line a certain way over something because it works better than this OTHER way, THAT'S THEORY. Unless you're LITERALLY just gonna play random notes, it's ALL "theory" man. The only question is; how limited would you like to be? Study it or don't. Thing is, you're gonna USE it REGARDLESS.

A friend of mine thought that we shouldn't learn from teachers but instead spend time with guitar playing anything random. Becoz music theory puts you in a cage and kills ur creativity. I followed his advice and was so frustrated coz everything I played didn't sound anything good. Although, rarely I got some riffs. I went to a guitar teacher who taught me basic theory and the world opened up for me. Now I know what to do to sound good and what can make it sound different. Idk. I never really wanted to be a great guitar player, I just wanted to be able to play songs for myself, no matter how complicated.
