Great info, thank you! A friend bought one for sax work - mostly a waste of money as there are too many posts etc in the way. Worked for a few Bari dents but an expensive mistake!

My pacemaker is certified for me being scanned in an MRI scanner so those magnets in your kit pose no problem. So really your advice relates to older pacemakers.

I did not know that pacemakers were now MRI-proof, that's cool !

An excellent summary of the use of these magnets! I have been using them in Singapore for about two years now and my experience with the system backs up everything you said. But maybe you should also have also warned potential users about the need to avoid getting the dent balls stuck in the tubing.

We have a set of the MDRS at my work. I dont really like the name "Magnetic Dent Removal System" I approach the MDRS more as a fine dent burnishing set and not a dent removal set. As mentioned in the video, there are pretty specific circumstances that this set really shines, maybe 10-15% of the dents you find on Tubas or Sousaphones can be sufficiently removed by the MDRS. Anything Euphonium sized or smaller, the MDRS is of no use for dent removal.

How do you avoid tramlines when using.

You can use an old drum head which helps. You can also put felt on the head of the magnet. These help but don't always stop everything. You need to be very careful when using this. If you are getting a line, you probably want to move down to the smaller magnet or ball.

My question is how on earth do you let equipment get to be so badly dented?

Thanks for the input ! I have read many people saying mdrs is a bad idea for french horns because they are very fine metal and it may rip it. Do you have an opinion on it ? A true mdrs was pretty overpriced for the amateur I am so I bought several large bearing balls and a big magnet (supermagnete for m'y fellow europeans) for a fraction of the price. Not as handy as a true mdrs but it makes the job done. anyway I like it for sousa and large euphonium work, saves a lot of time and soldering job.

Yes, the MDRS does not work well on french horns. That is ok because it is easier to get the dents out with mandrels anyway.

I’ve been a repair tech in Canada for 30 years and this tool has its limits.not very good with tubas that are very thick metal and lots of guards on it. I find it better on German made tubas that has soft and thinner metal. Also it’s better on curves then straight tubes.also I find 80 percent of the time where the ferrules meet together there is blobs of solder running down both ways inside the bow and branch and it doesn’t do a good job. You have to do the old fashion way and clean and scrape all that crap off.

Does it work on Alto saxophone?

It may work in the bell bow, but there are too many posts and toneholes on a sax to work well on most of the sax.
