Should I Buy a Mercedes-AMG GT S?

Should I add a Mercedes-AMG GT S to my collection? It might read like click-bait, but allow me to explain, and tomorrow's video will go into this in more detail. To ponder the question I popped out to visit Romans International and take an Iridium Silver AMG GT for a short drive. When I placed the order for the AMG GT R last year it was with the thinking of a delivery circa March/April 2017 with a possibility to use it for this year's car event calendar. In reality I over-expected my delivery date and I would expect the car now further towards the end of summer 2017. As trips and event dates start to load up into my schedule it's starting to look really rather busy... and that's an understatement! Out of my current cars, the 675LTS and GT8 are two very special cars that I do not want to overuse on motorway adventures where the driving is quite honestly very boring. The Ferrari FF is clocking up miles far too quickly and it looks like I'm going to do around 10k in just a 3 month period from April-June in it - which in all honesty is just too much when you consider it will need various servicing stops along the way, and the value would collapse with that mileage on it. The Focus RS can be used, but I consider it more my daily/backup when other things go wrong, and it's not a 'supercar' so isn't 100% welcome at every event. In short, to create all of this content through the Spring of 2017, there is easily room for another sensible vehicle acquisition that will be financially protected by saving mileage on significantly more sensitive cars to high numbers. It may, or may not happen, and it may, or may not be an AMG GT, but you have to start the thought process somewhere! And you know what, sometimes we work to do things because we want them, not because we need them, and this is just one of those instances.

I think having an AMG GT S during the build up to the new AMG GT R would take away from the "wow factor" when the R finally arrives. I don't think anyone would get bored with the FF in videos. If anything I'd love to see more of the FF.

The M4 GTS is actually absolutely awful to drive and not a GT Car t all. I've been lucky enough to enjoy a passenger ride in a M4 GTS, due to a friend of mine who works for BMW Munich. And even he said, that it's the worst car BMW has ever built and the worst BMW he has ever driven. Huge lack of power, especially in the lower ranges, a rubbish suspension and definitely overprized. And by the way, he already works for about 20 years now for BMW, so he's experienced a lot of their cars in his life ;)

If you absolutely want a car for roadtrips, you actually have quite a few options. AMG GT, R8 540, F-Type R, M6/Gran Coupe, Continental GT... I'd say the R8 is probably the more versatile one and it sounds properly amazing. It's also surprisingly comfortable and quick enough. A Porsche Turbo is also higly desiderable, especially the Cabriolet version.

For this use that you need this for I would say this spec and version is a great choice. You want some comfort as you are tens of thousands of miles and producing product for your audience along the way so you want to maintain some mental agility and freshness so comfort takes a higher priority over the fun of outright sportiness in the S version which can make one tired over longer distances and you are getting the R anyway. I think the comfort seat option is essential for these reasons also and I think though not my favourite colour combination I think for what you are going to use this car for it is an immensly practical combination ( I hate to think of the maintainance on your Ferrari's seats!). Another colour choice I love on these as it is so old school Mercedes is Selenite grey with Saddle leather.

It does make sense to add an additional car to your fleet for the upcoming trips. That will spread the mileage and in the end will be cheaper than having your current cars depreciating a lot by putting so many miles. Ideally you should try to get a long term loan vehicle like the BMW X6 you had last year. Which will save you forking out on an additional car and is therefore the cheapest option. Unless you need to buy another Mercedes to up your chance to get you on the waiting list for the Mercedes Project One Hypercar. In that case obviously buy a Mercedes GT (S) before your GT R will get delivered.

I think the GT (not the S) is perfect for your needs. Pile on the miles and don't worry too much about it. Buy one keenly for mid 80's and you will get at least 75k back at year end, even with some big miles. Bombproof engine and transmission. Go for it!

I know this sounds like driving 101, but check your tyre pressures. From the factory AMG tend to set the pressures at maximum. The C63S coupe I just took delivery on last month had its tyres on 47/42 PSI on the 19/20" AMG wheels. Recommended for 2 people, sub 150mph speeds is 34/32. Changing made a big difference to the ride and handling.

Hi Shmee, I recently popped into a local Benz dealer and drove an AMG GT. It was a nice car, very responsive, and reasonably quick. I drove the standard 450 horsepower version and I thought it could have used more power though, so I think the S variant is a good idea. The transmission is sitting right behind you and I heard noise coming from it fairly frequently, especially when starting or stopping. The steering had poor feel, yes it was responsive enough, but it lacked feedback. I'm not sold on this being as good an all around GT car as you seem to be looking for. I think I enjoyed driving the F-Type more and it sounded even better.

Tim, I would definitely consider the GTS over a GT. Even after a year, you would probably get most of the premium back when you sold it. Also, I agree about saving extreme mileage on your more prestigious cars. Why not get a GTS, use it on your first road trip, and use that as your testing ground. If it doesn't give you the buzz, sell it and just take the hit on the £10k you might lose in depreciation. At least you'll know. Plus you'll be saving 5k miles from going on one of your other cars, which theoretically will save you a bit of depreciation on them.

I do think another car would be the right thing. Bringing always the LT and the FF in all the different road trips would be a little bit boring. This is a really good option, I would personally consider a Jaguar F-Type Svr

If your really asking for our opinion then honestly know you should not buy a AMG GT S. You have enough cars in your garage that can be used for different purposes so I would ask, do you REALLY need another car just to get you by for 6 months? Obviously you can decide on your own, but it seems kind of pointless if you ask me. If your AMG GTR was going to come in not until over a year or so, then thats a different story. Also, if your really want a gap filler then buy a different car. I know the AMG GTR is a lot more extreme then the GTS but I feel that this could take away from your experience of your GTR. The GTR may not feel as special just because you kind of already know the car having owned the GTS so I would look at something else.

Get the GT, it's a lovely specced one with hardly any miles on. It will give you an idea of what to expect when the GTR comes and it will also keep the miles down on your cars, especially the FF! Keeping the value of your other cars are more important, you won't lose hardly any money on the GT when you come to sell it before the GTR!
