I think there’s a case for going halfway: investing in nice gear for casual use. Many photo enthusiasts I know enjoy documenting their lives, vacation photography, etc., any they enjoy the added quality of a “real” camera and lenses. For this group, investing in a nice mirrorless or DSLR and a small collection of lenses makes a lot of sense. Nothing excessive, but enough for quality amateur photography. I consider myself in this group. I love documenting my life, but I don’t have the sustained drive Or interest of a content creative. And that’s fine for me. Thanks for the thought-provoking video, as always.

+/- same with me. A camera and lenses that are well built and give nice results really are great. (x-t20 + couple of lenses) For the last few months I really enjoyed using my camera when cycling around alone or with my dad or going somewhere by car. We went on a short (3d) trip end of august and was happy with it. (I don't know if I can call this "documenting"). Don't care about putting my stuff out on platforms (at this moment).

Hi I really enjoyed these alternative content that so many channels lack. Just to share, I used to do couple of jobs, but now my camera is just a daily tool to capture my kids growing up. They don't bring in any money, I don't get more views on IG from my children's photos, but having good gear to preserve those memories of them growing up is more than worth it for me.

Some wise advice Andrew. I really appreciated the comments about how much work it is to run a KZbin channel. Quite frankly, that’s why I never started one. I’ve made most of my living from audio, video, writing and photography since 1986 and I feel I have much to offer. I get ideas for KZbin videos all the time, and I’ve had people tell me I should start a channel. But I see the production grind you guys must go through in the hopes of building a viewership and I think that maybe if KZbin’s still a thing when I retire in a few years, I might give it a go and give people some tips that I’ve learned for making a living from production. But until then, you’re content is great, and I really enjoy it. You are a very good educator, and even someone that’s been immersed in the industry as long as I have can learn from your channel. Great work. Back on topic: new gear means debt and depreciation. Make it pay in 2-3 years and sell the dated stuff (typically bodies) while they’re still worth something.

Your last sentence of never regretting a big purchase would hold so true for me as I know I come home frustrated with the shots I missed that I could have gotten with the more expensive and applicable gear. I’m a Fuji shooter but for wildlife it’s proving a real challenge. Great timing.

Sports and Wildlife photography are absolutely categories where the camera and lens do matter. Took me a long time to finally get to the Nikon D500 and the Nikon 70 - 200mm 2.8 VR II. Now I love running race photography whereas before I just wanted to be good at it but was frustrated.

I fully agree. I just bought a set with a Fuji GFX 50R and GF 3,5/50mm. I got into the system paying about 3500 Euros used. A lot of money. Even though if I know there would be a more flexible options ( like to use my available gear ( 24 MP Canon RP)), I am totally euphoric about my new Fuji. I am so happy to make this experience and I know what is possible with such a gear in terms of image quality. I don't regret to buy it, even if someone who is no involved with my thoughts would say ... why do you pay more for such a camera.

There are great used cameras from reliable online shops with good return policies for $250 USD or less. The Olympus OM-D E-M! from 2013 with Phase Detect & Contrast Detect sensor is going for about $230 and the rest of the micro 4/3rds are also bargains now. The Sony NEX 3 and 5 with APS-C sensor is less than a $100 and the NEX 7 with viewfinder and mic jack is not much more. The discontinued Nikon 1 system with the 1" sensor and very good phase & contrast autofocus start at $50 and you can get a smart adapter to use older Nikon F lenses and get single-point autofocus. Now is a perfect time to catch up on some of these gems. If you don't need the latest gizmos like 4k video or ISO 256k and have some patience, you can learn a lot. Oh, and the Nikon and Canon DSLRs are practically being given away.

Andrew, many thanks. I genuinely appreciate your demeanor and warmth...you don't convey arrogance or a sage of the age mentality regarding photography. For me, I see three perspectives: 1) Creator/professional; 2) Hobbyist creator); and 3) An enjoyable method to capture memories. I've learned in life that many decisions emerge from our perspectives (those perspectives are filtered from various sources). For some, spending extra money on expensive gear to capture family moments and memories may well be worth the $$. For others, honestly processing the check-points you provided will be a huge benefit. ...you did a great job encouraging us all to make honest assesments about this; And these lessons can be applied to other areas of life also. photography has been a journey for me, a roller coaster ride, if you have the time its a LONG story (ps, english is not my first languange sorry for the wrong grammar if there is any) . . . I once thought that i would be a landscape photographer then took portraiture then got to paid wedding shoots. i started photography in 2016, i was influenced by my friend who was a landscape photographer and travelling around the world. i was very excited of being able to travel and take pictures of amazing landscapes, i bought the fuji xt10 with the 16-50 xc lens not really knowing what to get at first, i just put emphasis on wide lenses so the 16-50 xc was the best cheap kit lens for me to take landscapes, my friend told me to learn my camera first like basics so i watched tony Northrup on the Fuji guide then exposure triad by Marc Wallace. Shooting manual was a slow start for me, it took me a little bit before shooting faster with manual, since i was to invested and interested in taking pictures, i even thoughtlessly started spending on some tutorials from elia locardi's photographing the world thinking that im able to travel and take pictures, i was so excited that i ended up buying the 10-24mm as my first lens purchase. I traveled to a couple of states thinking of applying what i learned and to put my creativity on work, but sadly i couldn't produce the results that i wanted, landscaping was hard, i didnt realize that theres a lot of stuff to plan and think before really being able to achieve the results you wanted, i was disappointed and really thinking of giving up but youtube suddenly recommended street photography videos on my feed, since i already have the basic gear, i started to walk around new york city and take some street photos. It was really fun walking around and taking pictures, the 10-24mm was taking into action but that fun really stopped because i didnt have the time to travel anymore, i got busy with work and some personal stuff that it hindered me on travelling, i was depressed, and was thinking of stopping photography and selling my gear. One day, my friend came over and talked about whats going on my photography and i told him everything, and luckily he started to do portraits, it gave me another spark on my creative mind, he invited me to take pictures on some models, after that experience, i was really captivated and started to watch some guides on youtube about portraiture and started spending again on some tutorials like Dani Diamonds natural light portraiture, Peter Coulsons portrait tutorial and Pratik Naik's retouching tutorials, my friend let me borrow his 56mm xf but i ended up buying the 50mm f2 since it was cheaper and was able to produce a decent result compared to the 56mm f1.4. After a couple of shoots, my friend and i got really busy with some other stuff, i stopped going to his invitations and he stopped asking as well, when i got free time, i was pondering to what to do since i really still like taking pictures, im a shy type of person and never have the nerve to ask a friend to model for me so that was bad for me. after learning all those stuff from landscape to portrait and retourching tutorials, i started to think about going to downtown chicago (since i live in IL), and so i did, taking a stroll and some street photohraphy, then suddenly i saw a ad that says theres a comic con, it got me really hyped up because i grew up watching anime, i attended every comic con in the city and took portraits on cosplays, porn conventions was nice too, i was able to take portraits of my favorite porn stars and this became my hobby every year. After a while, my cousin's friend had a wedding and they needed to have a photographer and i ended up being the photographer since they saw me take pictures on my instagram, they asked my on how much and i told them since i knew the couple and for experience, i would just shoot for free as a gift but they still insisted and gave me 500 bucks, i sold my 16-50 to get the 18-55mm becaause i did some research that it was better overall to have that and was comparable to the more expensive 16-55mm f2.8. After a couple more weddinng shoots, It got me to upgrade to fuji XH1, this was in 2018 before the xt3 came out, i was able to secure the 35mm f1.4, since it was being sold by cheap used in good condition while browsing in adorama's website, it has been my gear up to now and the 35mm f1.4 is the best lens ive ever had. Up to this point, i still get to do my hobby of getting portraits at people and comic con cosplays while earning on paid wedding shoots, i even had to shoot baptism, baby showers and anniversaries. I was able to secure my dream lens the 50-140mm. I dont wanna talk about how much i charge but youll be able to figure that out along the way with the guidance from influential people here on youtube. If you were able to read up to this point, thank you for reading. I never gave up on my photography, i probably just got lucky because i had a friend who was there and some lucky incidents but theres always a down time for every hobby, give it some time and you'll find the right opportunity at the right time and place. While theres downtime, learn how to edit pictures via free guides here on youtube, you dont have to spend on tutorials, shoutout to PixImperfect for the amazing photoshop guides.

I spend about 6k$ on the gear recently, but didn't really shot something yet. I'm watching tutorials and reviews every day for three months already. I know every setting in my camera and how to use it, know light techniques and audio recording rules. Now I can work as a technic on a film sets, but I still don't shoot anything. I'm trying to concentrate on a creativity now, but still mostly think about new gear and how will I use it in my "work". My perfectionism always pushes me to buy one more thing to get "serious" production quality and start to shoot. But this endless process as far as I see.

Again, you are so accurate in how you are approaching this subject. Gear, accomplishments, acknowledgement and sustainability are interconnected. For example, I am a pretty good amateu enthusiast. My photo interests are limited to people, streetart/grafitti and the occasional landscape photo opportunity. I always want to improve, think about it constantly and really dont care if anyone likes my work. I do it for me. I do it as a way of enhancing an already full life. I own an x100v, and xpro3 with 4 prime lenses and an xt3 for the one (80mm/f2.8) prime I use for specific shots. The x100 series has encompassed 80% of my photos. I have had the great privilege of documenting work for the NAACP in the area where I live, major streetart projects and a few others. So, a balanced, completely honest approach to gear and photography makes perfect sense. Keep it up. I do not just take a snapshot. Now, it is about intent. It seems that is what you are working to get folks to grasp. Regards....Wayne

In 2012 I bought my first DSLR, a Pentax K-30 but still didn't treat it seriously. After that I changed to a K-3 in 2015 and finally jumping to Fujifilm in 2017. I've only become very serious in the last two years. Photography has made me some very nice pocket money and got me some great experiences. I don't regret spending money on it at all even though I'm still in the red. I just plan to keep plugging away and see where it all ends up!

But ever since the last years and 1/2 I have been researching from the very basics of photography to the most nerdiest stuff! This really hits me. I have 2 older SLRs (Nikon D80 and Nikon D7000). They remain in my camera bags - never bring them with me. Once in a while I take the D7000 out. I am fascinated with it. Take a few photos of things in the house or our dog. But that's it - when I go on vacation I bring my phone only. The Nikon is 1,5 kg with the wide angle zoom lens. I got the idea, that if I had a small camera like the X100V things might change. Of course looking at that, I started looking at the other Fuji cameras. I am not sure what will happen, but I think this is a good channel to hang on to.

This is great wisdom many creative pursuits (many musicians also believe the lie that gear is the only thing holding them back). The reality is that the barebones essentials to create great art in most fields are more accessible today than ever. With that in mind, I think the last ½ of your last point is so crucial: "how much effort have I put in?" Given that it's very rare for our gear to be the primary thing holding any of us back, we should push forward as far as we can with what we have on-hand. Sometimes the gear functions as a procrastination point. We think, "if I just had *that*, then I could create something worthwhile." Sometimes the gear is a false sense of validation. We think, "no one will take me seriously unless I had something more professional like *that*." Go, create, and course-correct as needed! Incidentally, I think this is part of the drive behind a friend of mine who has begun to prefer replacing "creatives" in his vocabulary with "creators". Great content as usual Andrew!

I went a rather circuitous route to my current Fuji setup. In the late 2000's I got a Canon DSLR and over the next few years I acquired increasingly expensive lenses to be able to shoot better in low-light, etc. With little kids under foot, I decided I didn't like the interchangeable lens setup (and couldn't really afford the truly nice glass) so I switched to a "bridge" camera capable of shooting photos and video, from 25mm to 400mm. Lightweight, decent for travel photos and birthdays, but nothing special and with several hard limitations (aperture range from f/2.8 to f/8!). Basically the entire time I owned it I only got it out when I needed to, never because I really wanted to. In 2019 I decided that I wanted to get back into photography and actually make the effort to improve my skills. For me, getting the new gear was a gateway to exploring areas of photography that were impractical or impossible with what I had already. I look back at my photos from Iceland in 2018 that were all taken with my iPhone (I left the bridge camera at home because it wasn't weather sealed). They're fine, but pale completely to what I've subsequently shot on trips with my XT3 kit. To preserve those travel memories the best way possible, it was worth the investment in good glass and a weather sealed body. To me anyway. I think the key of your message is that it's a highly personal decision and won't even be the same for every person at different phases in their lives.

Yay! I’ve watched it all now! I’ve been interested in photography for about 38 years now. I did an O level* in photography while studying for A levels* (* qualifications in UK education). At the age of 16 while studying for a design & technology O level I built my own B&W enlarger & turned my parents bathroom into a dark room. I just do photography because I enjoy it though, I’ve never tried to make money from it. So, I think I can honestly answer ‘yes’ to at least your first test, & photography for me is not a ‘flash in the pan’ thing. The primary focus in your video seems to be around the money side of it, but I think that is missing half the story. I’m at a point in life where I have other commitments, family, career, houses that require maintenance etc....it’s also about having available time to make good use of any new photographic ‘toy’, it’s not just about being able to afford the money for it, it’s also about affording the time for it.....& for me, that is the commodity that I feel in short supply of. That may change when I take early retirement though, and then I can indulge much more in my photography....maybe event start that KZbin channel up! ;-)

You/we will probably never meet someone who can shoot "past" the level of ANY camera made since the 2000s. There's a guy shooting with the Lumix LX3 in 2020 and he is ABSOLUTELY brilliant. The reason? He bought that camera when it was new in 2009 and that's the only camera he has had/used since then. He REALLY knows that camera and it shows. Admittedly - he shoots to the strenghts of the hardware he has (which is certainly different than having a camera that can do "everything" well, leaving the shooting style up to the shooter), but that doesn't take away from his talent one bit. Pick a camera - pick a lens... stick with it LEARN what that combo needs and likes and you'll win. You can't buy talent with photography. IG: freshouttafocus

I'm actually looking to downgrade my camera at the moment... bought a full frame Lumix S1 and regret it. Its too big, too heavy, too slow autofocussing, and lenses are way more expensive. I'm going to downgrade to an xt3 because I'd much rather have a camera I bring everywhere with me than one that feels like a burden to carry

This is the right answer to the question, “Should I buy a new camera or lens?”

You had me at "shining creatively.' That and the phrase reminded me of (the first 51 seconds) of this dpreview video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4Oqd2utpJeoppY :) Love the channel & have been watching for a little more than a year!

Buy a cheap camera first and see if it's a passion or just a temporary compulsive hobby. You can always upgrade later.

I used to say this more, the response I commonly got was, "I have a cheap one. Its holding me back. It's no better than my phone."

@@AndrewGoodCamera I was referring to beginners who are exploring photography. If you feel like an entry level DSLR/mirrorless is no better than a phone, I feel like you could learn more skills to get the most out of that gear. I am by no means a high level professional. I still use my trusty cheap Nikon D3200 and 3rd party Sigma glasses. My photographer friends who use enthusiast gears initially would not believe what I use. I'd love to upgrade to a better system one day when I have extra expendables, but as long as I can make good content and decent money with what I already have, I don't feel the urgency to invest in a better system. Of course, I think my opinion only matters for those with a tight budget and want to consider photography as a career/hobby. If you have more than enough budget to get flagship gears then go for it and have fun!

Buy an expensive smartphone. My Huawei p10 plus camera is really great. Buy an expensive camera used. My Nikon D300s is great and I can use all my old Nikon F lenses on it. I don't do videos.

If I tried to be what everyone in the comments wanted me to be, I'd never get anything done. If you don't like my eye movements, move along, friend.
