Just read it now, my first thought is Jesus wanted somebody that hates everything about their life, because only a person in such a position would forsake all that he has for martyrdom. Anyone else would back out from bearing the cross because they love their life and family. It is not a calling for us to hate our family but it was a calling for anybody in the crowd who so happened to be in that woeful circumstance because their family was evil.
