Do you ever wonder if you should heat your hen house or chicken coop in the winter? This video will show you my first hand experience raising chickens through the cold winter months. I will explain the pros and cons of heating your hen house and explain what I do to keep my chickens strong and healthy through the winter, including the use of flock blocks, corn, and grubs to boost their protein and energy levels for body heat.

I think you have just about the perfect hen house there, as you say, the really important part about keeping chickens through the cold months is to keep out wind and rain, if they have shelter, and dry conditions they can tolerate very cold conditions, I think they do prefer round perches to the square timber type, and I use a natural branch of about 1 1/2" dia, they seem to get a better perch on them, your set up looks like a luxury environment ! Thanks for watching Chris! Thanks for the idea on the branches. Soon we'll be building a turkey habitat. Branches would be perfect for the perches.

I plan to add natural limbs in my coop. What type of wood do you recommend?

@@Banishedsoulsofficial Not sure where in the world you are, but the branch should be about 2" diameter, have bark on it that does not have deep crevasses to hold parasites and be fixed so it does not roll when the birds roost , Hazel or Birch is the sort of surface texture they need. Good luck!

How do you supply them fresh water if the temperature goes below freezing level, like we had the snow storm in Texas?

Thanks for watching Dan. I have a few pans (shallow buckets/feed pans) that I rotate throughout the day with fresh lukewarm water from the house. If you rotate the pans throughout the day it gives the frozen ones a chance to thaw or you can break the ice and refill. Stay safe and warm.

you can also use heated dog dishes if you have a power outlet in your coop
