There is no quitting in gardening. Aside from the tons of home-grown organic food that you will lose, you will also lose personal health benefits...the vitanin D from the sunlight, the daily natural "exercise"/movement/workout of working in the garden and the joy that gardening brings--there are always butterflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers and birds in my small backyard garden. I love being surrounded by nature.👌❤🌱🌹🦋🦗🐞🕷🌳🌿 I don't want to pay $0.99 for an organic lemon or zucchini. .That is why I plant. So, keep it up guys! There is nothing like home-grown organic vegetables and fruits.

Here's the thing. Not more than 10 minutes before I saw the notification for this video, I was sitting on the side of my bed feeling so discouraged. Thinking everybody's going into their garden harvesting something every day. It's near the end of July and everybody's garden is flourishing and I've got tomatoes still like sort of white green sitting on my determinate plants too small, my pepper plants are not doing as well as I wanted them to, I grew the wrong beans so I've got to pull them out because the growth pattern I wasn't prepared for it. Just nothing's really going well and I thought the same thing. Should I just quit? And then here's your video. I'm quite certain that the Lord used you to help encourage me. Thank you, James.

Be grateful that it's not a survival garden. A lot of prepper folk get a bucket of seeds for an emergency, and they have no idea that gardening takes practice. When the time comes to depend on it, you'll be eating, and probably bartering your extra food to the others, in exchange for weeding for you. Hah!

Been watching your videos on and off for several years, when you were actually just starting up your channel. I think that this is the best video you have ever done - the messaging is optimistic, realistic and encouraging. Excellent mindset! When I changed my mindset a couple of years ago to “every year is an experiment”, the stress that sometimes occur when gardening just melted away. I have a very large garden and sometimes it can be overwhelming when nothing comes to fruition - disease, bugs and hares. You learn from your mistakes and build your knowledge, just as you note. So, thank you for this excellent video.

Even if there's nothing you did wrong or if things are out of your control, you still learn the lesson of letting go. For me, that's the hardest to deal with. When the things you try to do to prevent problems but it just didn't work anyway. Sometimes you need to shrug it off.

I garden for the fun of it. I like to see my plants grow, and I always hope to get a good harvest. Over the years, I've learned not to have any expectations. I don't depend on my garden. If I don't succeed, the grocery store will do it for me anyway. Everything I grow, I treat as an experiment. If I try something and it doesn't work, oh well, I've just learned what not to do. The most important thing for me in the garden is to spend some good time with my plants.

Thanks for posting. I'm 57 and have been noticing my age for some years, now. Bicycling, running, hiking, etc..., are distinctly more difficult and I'm more prone to injury. So several years ago I looked for something I could do into old age that is not just sitting but also is not dependent on athletic ability. Gardening has been my answer. And yup, it's all about the wins, and this year (knock on wood) has been a winner. Best luck to you.

You are soeaking 100% truth! You work with nature! I’ve been gardening 40+ years. And even in my HOT zone 9b, people are amazed I can grow veggies. Though fall and winter are best, in my area. Originally from the north. Was just a new learning curve down here. Gardening is totally an investment, esp. at first. But it pays off like anything. Plus, it is just “in your blood”. And every year your garden grows bigger in some way. I love creating my own eco system in a park like and veg garden setting. You never quit learning. And the soil and composting is my #1 FIRST objective. Your garden is beautiful, we would be great neighbors. 👍. Proud to be a green thumber! ❤Tuck is so CUTE. Love your channel! Barely got over a minute of this and my heart is SO HAPPY! I started busting booty on heavy clay soil churning/adding and using an old spool of 4ft tall chain link fence. Very little came out of the garden, But part of that was because I didn't want to invest hastily, nor did I want to invest all at once. Every single year, I realize that I'm learning more and more both through research and experience, and I feel accomplished. So many people look at me like I'm crazy for saying that a significant lack of production is still a success (except for my husband who sees the effort and knows my ultimate goals and what I'm getting from it in the meantime)! I could write paragraph after paragraph of how many things went wrong and even more paragraph after paragraphs on what I've realized I can do better on and what I have done better on since then. It's been completely worth it and if nothing else it's just been a sanctuary to be out planting and trimming and checking and tending to the garden that's just a space for me❤❤❤

I grew in clay soil for a few years. Use lots of compost in the top layers of soil when you plant, and mulch with anything you can get - fall leaves, grass clippings, old straw, wood chips. The biome that will form under the mulch will nourish plants whose roots can penetrate heavy soil (plant some intentionally, comfrey is good for that). Add natural fertilizers throughout the season. Don’t add sand, it won’t help loosen the soil. Make sure it is draining so that rain won’t stand in the garden for more than 30-60 minutes after a hard rain. Always mulch bare soil. If you get frustrated, grow a few things in large containers (5 gallon buckets with drain holes work well), just be sure they get daily water and a layer of mulch.

I love Tuck💕💞💖. Thank you, James. I live near Montpelier, VT, which just got massively flooded. I live near, too, the Dog River, usually a small and well-behaved tributary of the larger Winooski River. On July 10th, we got about the same amount of rain as during Hurricane Irene, and my house and garden were severely damaged. But today, I started working out in my garden finally, and amazingly, not everything is trashed, and many things are doing well! Of course, so are the weeds, and they need taming, and my soil very much needs aeration, but I THINK I will be able to harvest some food out of my sad little garden. I will absolutely get the soil tested, but so far, I'm amazed at how heartened I feel. I am going to plant some fall crops as well. My neighbor is an organic farmer selling to Whole Foods, and many local co-ops, and sadly lost 90% of his present beautiful crops, plus, because of VT's regulations, will not be able to grow any food in the flooded fields for the rest of year. I hope he grows flowers! Thank you for your video, it's very inspiring!

My very first year and unfortunately I started late in mid-May. I'm learning to garden in 100+ degree days since mid-June. Incredibly, my sweet potatoes and gold potatoes are still alive -- have no idea if there are any potatoes underground though. I have 5 watermelon plants but I see no female flowers or I don't know how to identify them. But yes. I am learning a lot even though I may not have anything to harvest. All of my gardening is limited to containers since the soil is less than 1 foot before hitting bedrock. Hope to build some raised beds once temps get below 100 again.

When I commented, we had only harvested one zucchini- but it was the MOST delicious zucchini we've ever eaten and we created a meal around that one veg. Now, we've been able to get a couple more things from the garden. Not much...but it's a start and we're already figuring out what to plant for the fall, then doing a better job adding nutrients to the soil for next year (your videos are so helpful!). Even though there's not much to brag about with my garden, my husband and I are having fun. I am also seeing the absolute cutest, chonky butt bees pollinating my plants. That makes me so happy. You have taught us so much thank you. I have all your food forest quotes in my gardening book. I grew a garden for my special needs kids to eat better and mission accomplished they eat anything and everything out of the garden. No mistakes just lessons and I appreciate all of them. Thank you to you as tuck for changing our lives. I’m happier the kids are happier everyone is happier.

I have been gardening in one form or another for 40 years. Since 2019 when my husband died unexpectedly I have done nothing and my gardens, both veg and flower, have been devasted. I looked at them in January 2023 and wondered if I could get them back, if I can get me back to what we were. I want to just quit, but part of me says I can't, that my gardens and playing in the dirt is what soothes my soul, I can't quit now. So I have started rebuilding, slow since it's just me now, but I'm working on it. One day my gardens will be as they were and better. Do not quit.

I was late planting out my tomato plants this year, to the point where they were flowering while still in their plugs. Thankfully, my plants are better at growing than I am at planning a garden, and with the hot weather, they just took right off. Now they've produced little green cherry tomatoes that will soon start ripening. Even my late planted eggplants are getting bigger. So there's no loss in planting things. Even if you don't think it will grow, plant it anyway. At least it'll be a learning experience, and it might even be a successful crop!

I'm in ATL and saw our forecast of mid-90s a few days ago, so I ordered for the first time some shade fabric! It came in a day and I put it up yesterday over my tomato plants -- I have about 40 beautiful green, large, unmarked beauties ripening on the vines. And then last night, severe weather and HAIL! I think my whole row of tomatoes, okra, zuchinni and cucumbers were protected, all looked just beautiful today! I never knew about shade cloth until I started watching you and one other gardener online! Thanks James, you're a true inspiration for us all and wise as can be about the garden!

James I totally understand. Up here in the valley area of New York we’ve been receiving way too much rain. We’ve got two weeks of non stop rain everyday. Then we got two days of sunlight and another week of rain 😅. It was horrible for the garden. My leaves on my squashes and cucumbers all turned yellow and looked like they were going to die. Luckily we haven’t gotten rain in a bit and the plants have recovered really well!!! Keep up the tremendous work my man ❤❤

Great pep talk! We will need another one in about 2 weeks. Right now everything has perked up because we have had 5 or six straight days of rain after being in an exceptional drought and heatwave. But we all know what August is always like, and around here it is like trying to grow things in the furnace that fuels hell. I hear it is coming back next week. Please keep up the motivational moments I will need it!

Thank you for the pep-talk. Always learn so much from you . I love wandering through your garden with you, I am always mesmerized by what you have accomplished in it. I have been growing my garden for the past three years, I have constructed 12 raised garden beds out of repurposed materials (namely doors). I look at each year as a new experiment in growing, this year's accomplishments are broccoli and cauliflower. I have never grown either successfully before this year, so I am very proud of myself. I have had to fight off the moths and the beetles, but it has been worth it. Thank you for all your inspiration, and much love to Tuck. 🐕😊🇨🇦 ❤❤❤

Great reminder when things go wrong that are out of your control including the climate. And if you got the gobs of rain in the east your leaves are yellow from too much water and too much shade, not nutrients. Totes stay wet. Noticed same thing with new irrigation we installed on squash. We have the opposite problem-extreme drought. It’s a domino affect because it’s not just the constant watering, it’s all sorts of wildlife and rodent attacks along with usual bugs.

Learning how to not quit when faced with many reasons *to* quit, is still learning and growing! We had a bad start from seeds this year, and just picked up (rescued!) a whole bunch of 80% off plants from the local green houses. Many things learned, still growing!

The phrase "It's a marathon not a sprint" is a good one when it comes to growing. I got a veg garden this March, and nearly all my pumpkins, squash, and cucumber plants died after I planted them, after growing them from seed in pots. I now have just 1 x pumpkin and 2 x cucumber plants, but I am hoping they are now stable. On the bright side my sweetcorn is growing great, and I thought my zucchinis/courgettes were just at the flower stage, but after a few days of rain, when i was weeding, i noticed one of them had a big zucchini/courgette on it. I was shocked!! I had it for my dinner last night. 😂
