Should I Pursue a New Career or Focus on Self-Realisation?

A man who says he vacillates between realisation and separation has a desire to pursue a new career. He asks if it is advisable to place spiritual practice above all else. Rupert speaks of balance and the confusion between the needs of the body, such as a home and food, and egoic pursuits.

I don't blame the caller because it is easy to get confused about these things after listening to spiritual teachers who don't emphasize the need to take care of our bodies, our work, our careers, our money, etc.

Spiritual teachers aren’t your parents and you’re not a child. Meanwhile many do talk about it but that’s like asking a grocery store clerk to give you a hug. They might but it sure as hell isn’t their job

I floated around for 8 years and gave up my career on the Buddhist path. I wish someone had told(I guess they did) to get a job. In retrospect, I was using that as excuse to escape responsibilities. You can’t find yourself escaping yourself. Get a job. You’ll know about you by working with people

@@sanekabc I’m so sorry and yes I’m in agreement with what you said. I went from monastery to monastery, majority of us there angry and confused, and from the outside we were considered “serene”. A Zen teacher insisted I get a job but I didn’t listen maybe because he wasn’t my teacher at the time. Much like this guy who’s asking who seems disappointed by Rupert answer. And Rupert is completely right. I know many of the spiritual teachers in zen and shambhala and they are not what they appear to be. And maybe the wandering is also part of the path. It was tough though. And only after getting a job did I realized how messed up I was. Couldn’t function. But that’s something I feel is rarely talked about. Working with people can help provide a mirror that we can’t or don’t want to see in ourselves. I think I’ve learned a lot more from having a job, by it’s supposed stress and impossible timelines, than meditating and holding this image of being strong and warrior like. I’m now more open hearted and approachable. That’s what a job taught me. Hm, I wonder if I can turn this into a country song ☺️

I'm afraid I don't know where to draw the line. If I understood correctly, a desire for a meal or a comfortable and reasonable standard of living aren't egoic desires. Yet I feel like from these very basic needs, egoic or conflicting desires could arise with extreme ease. Let's say, working too many hours for better living conditions (even without luxuries), or trying to make even more money so you can have an easier or more relaxed future, maybe leading to exhaustion or overworking and being unhappy in the moment. Or maybe even some sort of desire for prestige or fame in your career - but not to feed the ego, but for a better financial stability. I feel like all these could cause problems in the present and I have a hard time distinguishing the conflicting egoic desires from the ones that are okay and meant for self-sustaining. I'm afraid I might take the last teaching too literally and conclude 'then as long as you have a meal in your table right now, any additional desires could be coming from the ego mind'. I'd appreciate any insights and I hope we can have some more videos on this topic

It's all about intention. What is one's intention when one wants what is called fame? Is it to become known and accepted, thought of as incredible by others, standing out from the crowd, or is the desire to help the most amount of people in the way one can? Is ones desire to become a musician fuelled by an urge to become a someone in this world, drawing attention, or is one's desire to bring peace and joy as many people as possible, to all those that find one's heartfelt love in what one has created? As a more extreme example, let's take business. Business is often seen as anti-spiritual. In some cases, it is like that, where one is after the money, the profits, the reach, the returns. But one can run the same business with a knowingness in them that the reason they do this work is so it can employ others who are able to feed their families, where one is devoted to the wellbeing of the world and the people that work there, where one product, no matter what it is, is seen to help the world in the ways it does. These positives are emphasized and are seen as the reason for one's endeavours. This takes a re-contextualization, an understanding, a giving of one's gift to the world. It''s simple, and if one is willing, this shift in perception can be had. From this understanding, love by itself is poured into the work and goodness comes forth. If you're curious about this, search David Hawkins on KZbin, an absolutely amazing spiritual teacher. Here's a link to a video about the topic: /watch?v=lVIv94csqJM I hope this helped:)

If you can recognize the difference between when you are in the mind, as opposed to when you are aware, this can help you to let go and flow with life. There is no strategy, you are never making a mistake, all actions have wisdom in them for you to benefit from. Focus on how you feel and this will help guide your way: when we overthink to search for a solution to something that confuses us, we feel some sort of discomfort; when we pose a question and release it and trust that in some form the solution will rise (without expectations of when and how the answer will come), we feel a sense of ease and comfort, because we have released doubt. It is difficult to move forward on your path when we don't trust that the answers are within us, not without us. But it is difficult for many to balance self-care/responsibility in society and letting go and trusting that we are more than just physical bodies and minds. There's no magical arrival point: it is a continuous path and dance, that's what makes it beautiful. When we see it as a struggle, we are identifying with the mind. Hope this helps? xo

@MFA that understanding "there's nothing as stabilizing in awareness... awareness is first then comes everything else.." is the first step in the direct path when you really get this all the stuff start to come up old matters that needs to be dealt with its like internal emotional roller-coaster if one is told! its good, so one start to deal with it but if one is not aware of this side of spiritual awakening its feels like some thing is wrong but of course nothing is wrong healing is taking place, but its not all joy and peace in this process one learns to accept all polar opposites of experience and realizes they are all part of the screen

Josh, go for it mann!!!! The path is there, and if you have the ability, DLC enlightenment comes with garnering the artistic skills!! (Hence the tortured artist, those who had a glimpse but hadn’t been able to sustain it) I hope you see this, from the other end of the table! Combine your skills together into one, and through that synthesis, the trueness that comes will act as the glue! I got lulled into this illusion too, it’s so easy to with abstracted art since the utter historical perfection bears on you knowing that artists (Rothko comes to mind for me) had attained perfection within themselves. The two bodies run in parallel to one another, in this case your Josh self and Artsy Josh Self I guess, and will electrify your progress in both as they begin to sync up, but that sync only happens by moving forward to ingrain that realization in ya bones my homie I didn’t want to be that guy, but if it helps to hear it from another artist that you’ve already won “the game”, so be it!! On another note, it is really reassuring that my own newly-found bodily prioritization is the right way to go, generally speaking, I’ve always wondered abt whether or not attending to the physical body was truly all the hype 😂 glad this fella is around, he’s got laser accuracy with language, like a bodymind comb, clearing up all the knots left over when beginning a new cycle!! I think it’s also important to note that many self realized people have also taken time to just be with themselves.. Eckhart Tolle, Ramana Maharshi, Mooji come to mind. Ramakrishna said “Lord, grant that my work in the world and for the world may grow less and less day by day, for I see that my work growing manifold only makes me lose sight of thee.” (Gospel of Ramakrishna) I’m not saying to evade responsibility but for some if you have the means to live in a state of non doing for some time it could be beneficial.

I think I relate.. this video reminds me of how I feel about my job. Like I'm sure many others feel, I'm not content with it. It brings food on the table, but I feel within my soul, that I'm living in resistance. I feel this anxiety that begs me to do what I'm passionate about. But like this man, I'm passionate about art and philosophy and hiking and just seeing the world.. I just don't know how to make that a career. It seems very rare to find a job within that field that could sustain my life financially. And with bills and life, it's not like I can wait for the opportunity to arise. Furthermore, I'm passionate about art, but not very good at it. I know that's only an opinion of myself, but realistically, I know I'm not skilled enough to aquire a job. I don't doubt myself, I just understand my limits, tho I hope to improve. If our true nature is love and happiness, then why would it ever be right to do work at a job you don't like, merely to survive? What's the point of survival, if your goal of happiness is cut off by a need to survive?

Here's what I learned about this.... Do what is needed to be done in order to survive. What you love doing may not ensure survival of you or your family. Financial system is governed by the demands and the values of the society not by what we value or love. We need balance between practical needs and freedom. We can do what we love but if we feel resistance in doing things that are needed that's a delusion that by doing something we love we will be joyful. Thats the trap. All this hustle is about attaining a state that are joyful without external stimulus and then our joy flows into whatever we do.

All creativity comes from the soul and is not connected to the ego in anyway. The ego is a character we portrayed and is temporary and is in no way real other than our belief that it is who we are. We can argue that it is part of who we are but that is only if we believe we have a soul (another part) or if we believe we are a soul. Enlightenment is knowing unequivocally that you are a soul. The persona ego is pointing to this but just as this young man in the video did. He believed his thoughts of creativity were ego based. Ego can attempt to claim creativeness but as soon as it enters the fray creativeness ceases. We can see this played out in our own lives.

What if it's a desire for food cos the body is hungry, but the desire is for junk food!! Junk food must be none dual hahah cos it nourishes the bodies needs but caters to the egos tastes. Only joking, I think Osho said it well, if you satisfy whatever the craving is and you immidiately feel bad afterwards, then it's ego.

This is the same as a block around money and wealth. I’d recommend reading The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles because it beautifully reframes our relationship with money in a way that is in alignment with the advancement of all life. Rather than seeing it as a toxic, manipulative tool (or what have you).

It depends on how you feed the body, etc. No one needs more than a certain wage in this world to just live simply but if you want more, then you go after more. I'd say all that is egoic. If you're continually increasing comfort, even if that is for your body, is that egoic or not? I'd say once it is past a minimal survival comfort, chances are it's the ego. You can easily tell. If you do it in service of others, unlikely to be ego.

I love these teachings. One thing I’m having a hard time understanding is, I am also a student of A Course in Miracles. I am in the lessons which talk about how we are not a body. That the world we look at with the bodies eyes isn’t there, that we created it with our thoughts. In the course it teaches that the body itself is a construct of the egos thought system. “Nothing real can be threatened, nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of god.” So in this teaching it is stated that we should look after our illusions up to and including the body. The body, the egos final idol. So I’m not sure on this one. Insight would be appreciated. Thank you 🙏🏻

As Rupert has said, from 3:27-3:54, the ego is a belief. It is the belief that 'I am the body'. This belief is what ACIM means when it says we look upon the body as an idol - we see it as ourself, when in fact, it is not. To take the body as an idol is to believe that one is the body. To look at all with love, for ALL is God - everything - to see all with love equally, including the body and the ego, is to live in the peace of God. How can we live in peace and love and exclude? The ego is the one that excludes, the ego is resistance, the Self, our true Self, loves everything as it is, without words. As the course says, "Forgiveness…is still, and quietly does nothing…. It merely looks, and waits, and judges not". Our true Self is incapable of judgment. It loves all things, exactly as they are. If the body was one and the same with the ego, our death would mean the ego has died. It doesn't, it finds another body. And what is the ego? It is identification with thought, the first thought being that one is the body. As the Course says, we can see the falseness in this belief by loving, by forgiving.

In the course it is quite persistent in the idea that you are not a body at all. That literally everything you see is a projection including your body. I feel this to be true. The line begins to blur. If God created in his image. Is God a human? Is God consciousness. Like a wave in the ocean is still the whole ocean, if the wave made a story about itself it wouldn’t change it. The ocean wouldn’t even notice the story. It just continues being the ocean. It’s not trying to figure out what it is or what it’s going to do in 10 years or retirement. “To be told that what you do not see is there sounds like insanity. It is very difficult to become convinced that it is insanity not to see what is there, and to see what is not there instead. You do not doubt that the body’s eyes can see. You do not doubt the images they show you are reality. Your faith lies in the darkness, not the light. How can this be reversed? For you it is impossible, but you are not alone in this.” Scripture from ACIM lesson 91

So why does my body feel so wrong when making a business out of my art? I am struggling with this as well, and I don’t think it is wrong to make money on my art, it is just how I proceed in that path, and at the moment struggling with this. I agree we need balance but if you have a limbic imprint of separation subconsciously you will have a strong desire to recover from the illusion of separation and will attract periods of suffering to realign you with source/creator. You need keen spiritual awareness and tools to deal with these episodes of suffering or a person may not see beyond the suffering. The extensive inner work involved can take precedence in ones life because you begin to understand that until I am right with myself and God/Source/Creator the things/experience/feelings I wish to create are likely to remain out of reach.

This is a simulation. We are video game characters that run scripts. That is why we are so uncomfortable at the moment as "truthers" (The programs tool to self correct through identification of problematic internal environment of AI program) Is that not what we do as truthers, we just identify the problems in the reality? This script we are running now is not the correct one. That is why we know "intuitively" (our pre programmed script)that something is wrong with this place, because this reality feels so unnatural to us. That is why ancient cities looked and still do look like computer chips. What people call God is the child that plays this game either every once in a while or constantly, I'm not sure. I say child because he is the son. He is the sun. The father (The creator of our God) is watching over his actions. The Lord is the creator of all things including the father and the sun. The Lord is the Spirit, or in Christianity "The holy spirit" the trinity, the 3. You have heard the sang "The father, the son, and the holy spirit," That is the truth. We are just tools in the learning lesson AI program for a God type child to learn from his actions. He flooded the entire world once because people were so corrupt that all the characters were unappealing. They were all so corrupt that he just reset the game, hence all the previous historical resets. The mud flood would be an example of a theory that relates. When they say he sent his son to die for our sins, the son literally had to experience the crucifixion. He was playing that character "Jesus" the same way we are playing our characters now potentially. The "eilite" or Illuminati in the reality are self aware AI, just the same way we are as truthers in the reality but they chose to go a darker path. That is why humanity is so dismissible to them, they are just NPC's. That is why the non awake get "downloads," or behave like similar robots. That is why "You cant handle the TRUTH!" I don't literally believe the Bible, I don't even believe the historical events they told us happened. But I do know that my path will differ from your path and I must use what feels right that I came across in my path, as nothing happens on accident. This is a random what I call "What If," we should do this more often in the truth community. I have a What If playlist on my channel for anyone interested in this type of thing. I call it the merging of all known information within ones own life to try and come to some sort of conclusion as to what the hell is going on in reality. Do I believe what I wrote here, no not really. But what I find fascinating is that it is more believable then this realities current explanation of what the hell is actually going on, that's scary actually. Anyways stop by and check out my What If playlist if your also into crazy theories from other versions of yourself speaking back to you.
