I started at 45. 49 year old purple belt now. The hardest thing I've ever done in my life and I love it. I was not a warrior growing up. I lived a lazy, comfortable life. I needed it to become a better person. I constantly surprise 20-somethings when they find out my age. I feel great both physically and mentally because of jiu-jitsu.

I followed bjj closely for over 10 years. Never thought I’d have the guts. My son started rolling at 8yo and I watched from the sidelines with envy. His gym closed when Covid hit so we started him wrestling. Again, I watched with envy. Last December his 30yo coach (total stud btw) said “you wanna come to bjj with me?” and at 46 years old I started rolling in the Gi. 6 months later I’ve dropped 30 pounds, best shape I’ve been since leaving the Navy at 23. My son and I both do Gi and Nogi together 3 days a week. We have never been closer and lemme tell ya how amazing it feels to get submitted by my 12yo. My single regret is not having the balls to do it sooner.

I am 54 and I am a blue belt in my jiujitsu journey. I have a different viewpoint from the one put forward in this video. I say this to people asking if it's too late to start jiujitsu. I say, if you are over 45 years old, you will not be hitting many more PR's (Personal Records) in anything physical. If you have a 405 squat at age 45, you are not going to be hitting 455 at age 50. The trajectory in most sports is downward after 40 something. In jiujitsu, the upward trajectory is still available because knowledge is power in jiujitsu. What you don't know, will hurt you. You can progress in jiujitsu well into your 60's, especially now with advances in medicine.

Jocko I think the estimate of being submitted 500 times before you start submitting others in jujitsu is very realistic. A friend of mine (who is a blue belt) told me after every class he would go home and write in his journal what each class was about and what he had done. He told that he had been submitted over 1000 times when he got his blue belt. By the way, I started jujitsu when I was 52.

First let me say I love BJJ and have enormous respect for Jocko and Echo...and you may think with that kind of start I may have a slight disagreement and you'd be correct. ANY martial art is a super power when you're built like a gorilla. The man who's considerably larger than, at the very least, 50% of the population and armed with the skill set of a BJJ black belt is rarely going to have the same struggle as someone of more average size and strength with equal skill. Size matters as we all know, or should. The guys walking around not respecting the size of potential threats are in for a wake up call. BTW I am a smaller but fit guy at 5'7, 160. I feel the grind EVERY time I train with bigger guys. No hate here just speaking my mind!
@austinwilkinson97744 жыл бұрын
BJJ is amazing on so many levels. 1, if you really get into the rolling part, you forget that you've been sparring for 2 hours and you're super exhausted. I remember being overweight, out of shape, and going for 2 hour's a day, 3 days a week. I remember it took a couple of weeks of getting submitted but I eventually won a match, and that was exciting. But what was equally fun, which helped me keep coming back, was when I would roll with the blue belts. I did this from the beginning, I'd roll with the belts above me if I showed up early or stayed late. I remember I always lost, but I learned how to move and enjoyed as it took them longer and longer to submit me. I remember earning their respect, and a couple of spars, they even left an opening open for me long enough to practice an actual submission instead of "holding my breath" techniques and "see how far your arms can bend" things. Just don't get cocky. I thought I could brute strength my way out of an armbar, and the guy ended up hyperextending my elbow and it knocked me out of practice for a bit. So know when you should tap, don't get injured. lol

I just started at 25. I did a bit of Kickboxing at 20, and did wrestling from 14-17. Did swimming and running constantly from 18-25. Right now I’m definitely focusing on the Jiu Jitsu techniques as opposed to relying on the old wrestling moves that are literally ingrained in my muscle memory. Couple weeks and I’m already learning how to staple someone down with my hands and legs to pass the guard. Learning very slowly but consistently.

Preface: I get tapped ALL THE TIME. BUT... It’s a spectrum. I tapped my first opponent my first roll. I also wrestled for a state level team in high school and he was a 3 month fresh white beltch. I also was a “white beltch”. A few weeks before all this corona stuff a newbie came in. Never grappled before ever. He had the best natural instincts I have ever seen. His body just knew what to do (position wise... he wasn’t sinking deep triangles) for fundamental movement purposes. I would imagine if he keeps showing up in 3 years he will be one of the best blue belts I have ever known. Disclaimer I suck at jiu jitsu. I just do it all the time (or did before the ronis) and love it.

Being kinda small, but flexible with a tenacious attitude and a never ending journey to deeply understand and grow in concepts, technical perfection and strategy will take you a long way. I never thought twice about it. I absolutely with obsessiveness knew I had to pursue this after seeing Royce Gracie in UFC1. You DO have to have a bit of a a graciously well concealed ego to succeed though, in my opinion. The kind that makes you keep coming back till you get that guy, rather than the unhealthy insecure ego that makes you quit.

But I was determined to keep pushing and keep turning up and now, maybe 2 years after I first set foot on the mat, I'm starting to feel comfortable. I practiced Karate for 14 years and I stopped at my 33, now I'm 41 and I started Jiu-jitsu, honestly sometimes I wish to quit but why body get recovered my only desire is going back to the gym... the Best advice I have ever heard, "Train until you submit someone" then make a decision 👏🏻 👍🏻 Thanks

#1 piece of advice for guys 40+....listen to your body. You are not 25 anymore. Rest and recover....I didn’t follow this rule and got seriously injured. 1 year post surgery, and I am still not right. I started at 44.

As a 50 and having practiced BJJ the last I can say that I loved the sport a lot, but also older people need to know they will have injuries and some of them likely will affect their quality of life from their 60's on.

I was fortunate to take up Jiu Jitsu as a 30 year old - (66 now). Prior to that, I spent the previous 12 years, training throughout S.E.Asia ... once I hit the mat in Rio - I was at once both shocked, humbled, and my curiosity-meter was off the dial - never looked back. Thanks to both Jocko and E.C ... I love your prodcasts.

I'm 43 yrs ... and I literally just started Jiu Jitsu last week, 2nd day a black belt bicep slicer me, it was the most hurt thing I've felt in a long time... and I've done boxing in the past.. got punched in the face... but this is different... never in my life got tossed around like a rag doll.... I love it! I want more!

Slightly different perspective. I am 50+. Left leg/ankle rebuilt 2x. Right knee already needs to be replaced. Left knee is almost as bad due to the recon of my lower leg & ankle. Reconned right right, spine if effed from compression injuries galore. Scores of injuries during military service, sports, and life My main concern is training and getting re-injured over and over and over again due to young bloods trying to "alpha up" all the time. I come from a Kyokushinkai, Wrestling, and boxing background FWIW. The desire is there, but healing from injured takes forever now; if it ever heals again.

It’s amazing how people take on driving school seeing how hard it is in the begining and how bad they are at it, but they won’t apply that approach to nearly anything else in life. I love this sport and am only 2 months in. The beauty of internalizing and improving the bjj system is highly rewarding. Once you discover your movements get efficient and you don’t gas out within minutes, that feels amazing.

I’ve dabbled in BJJ for months at a time in my 20s, but life stuff keeps getting in the way. Optimistic that I’ll get into it again this year at 28 years old. I’ve had the bug before, but would get too obsessed with BJJ and abandon other parts of my life that needed attention.

"You might get submitted 4, 5 times per class when you are new" Ha, I was submitted 8 times in 5 minutes my first night by a brown belt. It only went downhill from there once the thirsty blue belts saw the fresh meat.

I started training at 43 been training 3-4 days a week for 2 yrs now. For the guy that asked the question after training for 6 months when that new 20 year comes in that not only half your age but obviously stronger and faster than you and hes going level 9 and you summit him 3-4 times in a 5 minute round you'll never look back on weather you should keep training.

I've been thinking about starting for awhile now. The thing that is holding me back is my lower back issues. I quit playing goalie in hockey because of this, not because I'm afraid of the pain of an injury, but because of the financial risk of missing work with an injury. If money wasn't an issue, I'd be there in a heartbeat. If I started, got hurt, and missed work, I could see saying to myself "what did you think was going to happen, dumbass?"

Find a good school let them know about your back injury if they're a good school they will adjust training to your safety avoid sink or swim schools that throw you to the wolves

I’m 40 and have been putting off BJJ for 20 years because of my ego. It seems like every year I make a plan to start and I’ll sit in the parking lot of the BJJ gym and not go in. Recently, through some eye opening 🍄 experiences, I crushed my ego, and I started BJJ. I’m getting my ass kicked 4 days a week, but I love it. I regret that I’ve waited this long and I never dreamed that I would fall in love with BJJ like I have, but every day is a quest to learn, whether or not I’m in the gym that day. I never dreamed that I would love the pain and torture that I get put through while rolling, but it is beyond enjoyable; it makes me feel alive!

Well it wasn't 500 times but I remember it being quite alot! 🤔 we didn't have as many people training back in the 90s so I'd say about 40-50 times. I was 20 and in good shape though at the time which helped alot. I was also the smallest guy in the class at 160lbs. It was a grind though! I thought I was tough and then I started rolling, we'll we all know how that story goes... Anyhow, been teaching for 18yrs now and I'll I have to say is, Don't Give Up!

You can start jiu jitsu at any age. The question is how much do you want to commit. At 40 plus you can train 4 or 5 times a week and still be an ass kicker. Or, do it once or twice and still get something valuable out it. Jiu jitsu is an amazing amount of fun. Rolling around with an opponent you’ve entered into a contract with is extremely gratifying.

I feel the same way as the guy who asked the question. My first martial art was judo at age 11. I was on and off again for a few months and didn't like it. Then at 16 I started with first kung fu then 2 years later Okinawan karate which I continue to train in today over 50 years later. But the first few UFCs were a wake up call when Royce Gracie served up a nasty slice of humble pie to strikers. I used to think that my strikes were magic death rays that would drop a grappler before he could get his hands on me. I realized from the UFCs that I had a big hole in my education. It took awhile but on the week of my 60th birthday I started training in BJJ and continued for 3 years until I got a somewhat serious hand injury. I learned alot, did well when rolling but was plateauing when I got the injury so I stopped. But striking arts always made sense to me, I was good at them and frankly they're easier to learn. For me training in BJJ was like eating my vegetables. I didn't really like it but I knew it was important that I learn it. You have to have both.

that first submission against an evenly matched...or even a slightly better opponent is and was the best feeling ever...that was the moment when i fell in love with the SPORT of Jiu Jitsu...and sport jiu jitsu is not for everyone...but Practical self defense Jiu Jitsu like Gracie Combatives...that i believe is something that everyone with a PULSE would be better for knowing...it should be taught in public school the effects are that powerful. if you never had to grapple your way to safety...you probably wouldnt understand.

I’ve been kickboxing for years but will start on BJJ today and I’m 54. For me BJJ is more about conditioning my body and learning a new skill. The martial art element is an absolute benefit but personally, I want to keep in top top shape and BJJ offers me that.
