I bought a T120 in 2009 and loaded it up with all trinkets, and as I was a OAP I thought it would do me for the duration, but unless I only used it on guaranteed warm sunny days I would be mortified when it got wet and muddy, You feel that you must give the bike a deep clean after each ride. So if you really love cleaning bikes, go for it. Now I don't do trinkets, and I want a bike I can ride all day without worrying if it looks dirty. Hence the Himalayan 450 I now have.

As ive got older and the kids have gone , mortgage finished etc ive spent a small fortune on big expensive bikes and when i look back the love of my biking life was a Honda CD 175 when i was 18 years old . Go figure !? Big and expensive doesnt mean 'better' in an emotional sense . You love what you love !

Absolutely, I had exactly the same bike, a 1967 CD175 (sloper) in blue when I was 18 years old! I rode it regularly in all weathers, sometimes hundreds of miles at a time. It was comfortable, it seemed fast enough and I often took a pillion. It did everything I wanted and it never occurred to me at the time that I needed anything else or different bikes to do different things. I'd love to have a go on one again, although possibly a bit slow now for modern traffic.

I've personally never seen the point of large capacity modern classics. They're primarily designed as sunny Sunday cruisers, and naked bikes feel best between 50-60mph anyway, so why the need for a 1200cc motor that costs more to buy and run than a smaller motor that does the same job? I've fallen into that trap before, moving up the engine capacity scale as an "upgrade", only to be left with a bike where the only thing upgraded about it was the increased cost of ownership. Bikes like the BSA, RE 650's, Moto Guzzi V7, and Triumph 900's are more than enough to fulfill the modern classic brief in my view.

I have owned several 1100cc cruisers but, for me, 650-900 is my sweet spot. I have owned more 600-650s than any other capacity, although for the past 3 years, my only bike has been a Scram 411. I have owned a Triumph in the past and enjoyed my time with it (7 years).

I think you have come to the correct conclusion. Over the past 10 years I have moved away from expensive top brand bikes, over to the more 'affordable' types such as Royal Enfield etc. These bikes have so much character and you have to work them a little harder, but this all adds to the bond with the bike, rather than a 1000cc plus bike that just wafts along with ease and in a more sterile way. The more we spend on bikes the more we shy away from using them, such as in winter or on that tempting gravel trail. Sean, ask yourself if you would have ridden the Triumph on the trails you did in Spain, as you did the BSA? What you did on the trails in Spain helped you to bond with the bike and create a lasting memory. If you wouldn't do the same on the Triumph, what memories would you create?

Sean, What a sensible guy you are. You have feelings for the BSA and remember the good times you had in Spain (priceless). Is the Triumph a better bike, Yes i guess. So what do yo do? Wait until after the house move etc, By that time the BSA valauation would be an all time low, So keep the BSA (for ever) followed by the Triumph when funds allow. Until then Ride safe,Mike Sunny Wales .

I think the magic of the BSA is that single cylinder engine plane and simple, that where the character comes from. Nearly 3 years ago I bought the Royal Enfield Classic 350 brand new, having over the past 50 odd years from Honda 175s to 1200 BMW and all manner of bikes, twins, triple, 4 cylinders etc. For me the single cylinder RE is the most characterful bike I have owned and the first bike in all these years I will not be replacing. I would add I have only ever had one bike at a time trading in the current bike to buy the next bike. So in short it comes as no surprise to me that you have stuck with the BSA 😊

Sean I think you’ve done the right thing. Circumstances aren’t the best for buying a new bike. However if you’re looking for a classic retro style bike with loads of character and charm, fantastic build quality, which isn’t overpriced, you need a 2019-2022 Kawasaki W800 Classic. The original W1 was based on the 1970’s BSA Goldstar, so there’s a nice connection there, and it had a unique engine, sound, and feel that you can’t get anywhere else. The model from these years have disc brakes front and back, ABS, and a tuned exhaust note that makes the most of that 800cc twin with 360° firing order. I think this could be your perfect bike!

Sean I can’t fault your logic on this. I’m fortunate enough to have owned several shiny brand new high end bikes over the years, some engaging and some very bland from all sorts of manufacturers. And at the same time always had some vintage classics to fettle and ride. There was never a time I did not enjoy swapping back onto an old bike with bad breaks, crap lights and lumpy carbs. I was also not afraid to buy secondhand modern bikes, but that was up until fuel injection took over. ( They come with a risk that someone who always maintained his own bikes found expensive on a few occasions). So now I’ve got that luxury bike phase out my system and can look back with hindsight and say it’s not that shiny add on accessory or gadget that makes for an engaging ride, or the kudos in the car park, it’s the sound, the feel, the connection and the smiles. So whatever bike that is, chose that one, it might surprise you what that is. So like yourself Sean, still loving my BSA.

Bought a T120, new, in 2020. Covered 12,000 miles in 4 years and sold it in July. Bought a Gold Star and can honestly say that, in almost every way, the BSA is more pleasurable. Apart from long haul motorway journeys, where, clearly the extra torque and power allow effortless all-day riding, the Gold Star offers more fun in virtually all conditions. It's telling but I don't miss the T120 at all.

Sean, that is a beauty. However there’s maybe a couple of considerations: 1. It’s at the top of the tree with everything you’d ever need… so where do you go from there? 2. Can you see yourself on it up in the mountains on rough tracks trying to avoid big dogs like late last year? Oh, and 3. You’re known as a BSA man through and through… would you lose your identity? Glad that Suzie is so supportive - heartwarming. 👍😎❤️✅

Those are excellent points Nigel. 1) yes it would be hard to go anywhere from here and I prefer cheaper (more flawed) bikes really. 2) no i couldn't it would be too nice to take risks with and any mishaps would be hugely expensive 3) I'd rather not be super close to one brand but I guess I always wanted a big single retro effectively a big Meteor 350 and having BSA on the badge just makes it more special. More than likely I'll have another cheap bike join the BSA... thanks for this comment by the way, you hit the nail on the head 👍

I bought a pre-registered T120 in the same colour you tried last year. It's absolutely fantastic, I love it. I've only done about 1500 miles so far but never found the throttle to be snatchy at all. I'm used to old british bikes and a large four cylinder bike with a quarter turn throttle so perhaps I'm just good at feathering the throttle? The issue I needed to fix was the gearing, I found it massively over geared, 6th being useless below 60 whilst 1st being too high in very slow heavy traffic. A 3 tooth increase on the rear sprocket transformed the bike, so much smoother when pulling away and just nicer all round. I reckon that would sort the snatchy feeling as well. I've watched lots of T120 reviews on KZbin and only heard one owner mention the gearing yet lots of people on the forums have made the change and suggest that's how the bike should have left the factory. I feel your pain regarding the huge price difference between your current bike and anything else you want Sean. I've had the same issue for a long time with a Fazer 1000 I've owned for 20 years. I test rode bikes then rode the Fazer home and thought it's great, the new bike is not worth £lots extra. I do regret that now. I love the Triumph, just walking in to the garage and looking at it. I've made the decission the Fazer is going now even if it's worth far less on the open market than it is to me. Not sure what I'll get in it's place yet. If I was in your position, I'd definately hold fire for now. You have a bike you like and it's far more important to get your home and future finances in place first. There will always be another Bonnie or bargain later on. Good luck with whatever you decide to do mate.

My 2021 T100 definitely handled better than my (new to me) 2017 T120. I think it's largely due to the less gyroscopic mass of only a single disc. The extra torque is nice and quite addictive. But, I think you'd miss your BSA too much if you swapped. To be honest, I ride the Classic 350 much more (perhaps 90%) but the T120 is great for two-up progress on faster roads. Conclusion: Have them both 😊

If this is a bit too much of a financial hurdle to clear at present but you're looking to upgrade from the BSA, have you considered the Kawasaki W800? It will give you a bit better performance than the BSA and the fit and finish is considerably better, by all accounts. And the engine on the W800 is a work of art, in more ways than one. You'll probably have to stick your hand in your pocket still for a grand or two, but you do get a lot of bike for the money. Then move it on once the financial constraints are eased and get a T120 then. The bike that you're looking at is a beautiful bike, but it wont be the last one that comes up. Patience is a virtue, they say. Being poor isn't.

Totally into the idea of buying what you really desire rather than settling for affordable options - used Triumphs with low miles and extras represent such great value for money. Even if you were rolling in money, you couldn’t find a a better retro option. Whether you go for this one now, or keep your power dry, a T120 will be good for your channel.

Take your time and think about it the problem in your job doing all the reviews you will fall in and out of love with new bikes just seeing them not necessarily brand-new but just something different. You’ll get it then you’ll see something else when actually you’re probably having the best time of your life on that BSA and it’s yours. I’ve learnt this lesson myself changing bikes when actually they all pretty much provide the same thing trying separate your Bike reviewing from your personal feelings. You’ve got the best of both worlds you’ve got a lovely BSA that’s not costing you anything and yet you can go and ride and test ride everything else just try not to fall in love with them. They all do the same thing at the end of the day just enjoy the ride.💪🏼

as i have a T120 i might be a bit biased it certainly is specced up , mine has a fender extender as michealexeter said if you take it out it will need cleaning before putting away if you wish to preserve the finish i have to say i get as much pleasure owner/ satisfaction from cleaning and polishing my bike as riding it it has 18,000 miles on the clock , the best upgrade i did on my bike was change the tyres to Meltzer road tech tyres ,if you don't buy it i expect someone sles will or has !

Having had HD´s and BMW´s GS´s in the past, I can testify that my current bike, a 2023 T120 is the perfect bike all around !! you don´t need more tech or HP´s that she provides .. She is gorgeous and really well made ... I love mine and after these 2 years, I would just trade her in for another T120 ... she is a keeper !! .... ( ps: I also have a city commuter RE classic, as the T120 is for road stretches only .. ) ... all that said, I understand your pain, the ammount of cash is not justfiable 4x times over the BSA .. We don´t have BSA down here in BR to compare, but we do have RE´s 650 twins and they cost approx 1/2 of the Show Room sticker pricer compared to the T120 ..... and I did test drive the interceptor 2x already and It´s a magical bike for the money .... it does all the T 120 does but with not in a luxury way ..... It does not have the engine, the finishing and riding finesse of the T120, but God, what a bike for the money !!! Cheers

A better bike is not necessarily a better bike . It may be faster handle better more reliable more refined but that doesn’t necessarily make for a more fun ride. It doesn’t always give you the joy that a lesser bike does.

Absolutely YES you should swap to that Triumph. It's a lovely example of a bike that is vastly superior to the BSA. And that's a bike you can keep forever. Long term if you keep it, and stop chopping and changing bikes, you will be better off. But if you know you can't afford it at the moment, then you can't afford it and the question is non applicable. But if you can afford it, then go for it. It's a cherry. And be mindful that the value of your Gold Star is just going to go down and down.

I had to comment before finishing watching the vid.I have a 2021 plate Black T120 which I had to get last year with 800 miles on the clock. Its almost identically spec’ed as the one your looking at. I can honestly say it’s one of ,if not the most enjoyable bike I’ve owned and in overv40 years of riding. It’s a bike that I will keep. What I have discovered is that if you ride it with an open face helmet and goggles it becomes a completed different riding experience again with oodles of character. My advice is it’s a bargain. How much to purchase a same spec’ed new one?And you never know,if you buy it you may keep it.

Fuel ⛽️ gauge is working properly it estimates your distance to empty & if you're doing 100kmh it'll say 180km to empty & then ride in a 50-70kmh zone for a bit the fuel ⛽️ gauge distance to empty will go up to 190km to empty cause using less gas etc so it is working properly that's how they work same on my Trident 660 I had. 1200 are torque monsters the 900 is adequate & do everything 1200 can do but 1200 be smoother at higher speeds.I reckon you will end up with a Triumph 900 or 1200 eventually.BSA is a good bike & you have alot on at moment with moving,no job & timing might not be right & they aren't cheap but don't give up on owning one when the time is right you won't regret it.

Hey Sean, I think you have done an excellent job of weighing the pros and cons of the T120. Obviously it is a beautiful machine and a very desirable ride. But you make a good point with the question, “ Is it four times better than the BSA?”. I would say no, and also do you need a 1200cc bike for your style of riding ? I think you have answered these questions during the ride commentary. Probably not the right time to take this plunge when you are still enjoying the beautiful BSA. Just my 2 cents opinion. Cheers.Dan ✌️🏍🇨🇦

I have a T120 which I bought in exactly the same colours as this one. Also added most of the extras that you have mentioned. Removed the Triumph touring screen as the buffeting was awful! I understand why you have opted for the BSA now but perhaps go for the T120 later in life!

The T120 has always been the pinnacle of modern classics for me. But like you said, maybe sometimes you shouldn't meet your heros. I've never actually ridden one, came close with a 1200 Thruxton, which wasn't really for me! For now my Goldstar will suffice. I'm in a similar situation to you, just built a new house and quit my job, need to be sensible!

I was interested in what you said about Triumph dealers being contractually bound not to sell second hand Triumphs over 18 months or 2 years old but I've just checked out two dealerships at random, one in Birmingham and one in Exeter and they have Triumphs for sale going back to 2017 and perhaps further (I didn't look at every bike they had in stock). So I'm wondering where you got this information? Re the T120 it looked fab but compared to your BSA I think it fell victim to the laws of diminishing returns! Exactly the conclusion I would have come to. I had a T100 for nearly 8 years and there was always this feeling that it had no character, it was almost too good. As I've mentioned before I now have an Enfield Classic 500, the lowest powered, slowest motorcycle I've ever owned. But here's the thing, I love it and could never replace it.

Morning Sean, premium bike and a premium price indeed!! I think you've come to the right conclusion. At the end of the day it's about how the bike makes you feel when riding it, it's more than premium brand and premium accessories fitted to it, would you gain anything from buying a Triumph particularly based on a test ride of a few hours? We all like to change our bikes for something different and I'm as guilty of that as the next person, but looking at it subjectively what would you actually gain from buying a Triumph and is it worth taking a risk at that price? You've raved about the Gold Star from day 1 and that says a lot for me, you've invested a lot of time with the bike and hopefully now the factory update kit has been fitted it will prove to be more reliable and function fault free. Do research on the Triumph also, looks aren't everything, I hear regular stories from owners who question the reliability and build quality of their machines although, I can't comment on this particular model. Also, do your research on this particular dealer - enough said on this one I think. I would also question the service history of this particular bike, even though it's only done 700 odd miles,I'm assuming from what you say it's never had an oil change to date and has spent most of its life standing. Oil loses its viscosity over time and is hydroscopic, that would raise a red flag for me particularly at this price point. At the end of the day it's horses for courses and I wouldn't want to influence anyone's decision but looking at it in the cold light of day is it the right bike for you? You can tour on anything these days as I have done on all my RE J series bikes. Keep the BSA and continue to enjoy it and buy a 350 Meteor to keep it company on the garage - you know you want to!! 😉🤣🤣👍

Stick with your BSA. Realistically 60mph or thereabouts is all we need nowadays (who wants to go anywhere near motorways). The T120 gives very little extra that you don’t already have for a fraction of the price, who wants a big loan?
@pinkiewerewolf

My first boss used to ask us young guys “Do you need it? Or do you only want it?” Before you came to your conclusion I was thinking a question I ask myself when I’m thinking of “upgrading” a bike or whatever it may be, why did I get my bike in the first place? Why do I “want” to move it on for another bike, what can’t it do? I will admit that I sold my KTM 890 Adventure because I had always wanted a T-7 and one became available at my dealership… finally. My gal had transferred and there wasn’t a KTM dealer close to her location any longer, but there is a Husqvarna dealership in my town. It probably would have been OK with service always done there. KTM’s cam issues got into my head. I had the bike checked out and a major service performed with the cams checked and valves adjusted, things were fine. Which made me feel OK about selling the bike. Yet I felt guilty because the bike fit me perfectly and performed admirably. In the end it really came down to the fact that I wanted to be on Team Yamaha again with my home town dealership in case the bike needed warranty work. Which the T-7 did, Yamaha put in a new clutch at the 2000 mile mark. Just broken in mileage, really. So, with your life changes, I think you made the right choice. The BSA does all you need it to do, except off-road riding. Unless you want more Channel content that you don’t think the BSA brings to the table? Grab a chin mount and take us on some wonderful country rides. The chest cam only shows us the tank and bars. Show us what the BSA is truly capable of, in every way imaginable. Then it might be time to go through the same process with another bike and make comparisons. It’ll give you time to move houses and get some things settled and only cost the amount of the action cam mount and some petrol. Best of luck with your decisions and the move!

I have always said that the T120 Bonneville is probably the one bike I'd buy and see my beloved Interceptor leave my possession without being too upset. It's just going "up a notch" in quality as far as I'm concerned without losing the lovely classic look. I often ride with friends with much larger, more powerful bikes than my Interceptor and I do occasionally feel a little bit underpowered compared to them (admittedly, only occasionally - most of the time it's not an isssue) whereas on the T120 I wouldn't. I've never ridden a T120 though, so I have no idea if I'd like it enough to actually buy one. Maybe I'll give one a try. One day...

That is a beautiful bike. But would you take it places where you took the GoldStar? Would you consider / prefer the T100? I also think you should try to get a test ride on a W800 (I know, it is not on sale in UK anymore, sadly). Edit: I think you are making the right decision. Take care of first things first, the right bike will come at the right time and you will enjoy it more if you will not have that guilty feel that you are not doing the right thing like you would have now.
