I took gap YEARS after high school. Best decision I made in my life. I went back to college (community college) at 22 fully motivated and confident in my ability. This fall I will be transferring to Michigan state university with a 3.8 gpa and 60 credits, I’m 26 now.

I don't like that you kinda implied and kept saying you'd be putting your life/career on hold by taking a gap year. Yeah obviously you might not be backpacking through europe or traveling around the world, but there's so many valuable ways you can spend your time. Our paths don't have to be linear and taking/deferring a year off isn't going to affect your life that much in the grand scheme of things. As someone who chose to defer a year, I'm planning on working on political campaigns, volunteering for local non profits, interning in job areas I might be interested in for a career, spending time with my family, working on personal projects (like a blog and a youtube channel), and so much more! Taking a year off from school can help you re-find your love of learning and give you a clearer picture of what you want to do with your life/how you want to spend your time in college Obviously, if you're someone who has their whole life planned out and knows you want to be a doctor/engineer/lawyer/whatever, deferring might 'hold you back' a year but that doesn't mean that year was a waste

Taking a gap year isn’t necessarily bad. It depends on you. You gotta weigh in your options and choose what’s best according to you. If you think you can do an entire year online and effectively learn from it then go for it. If you think you can’t do the year online, then don’t. I understand that it’s not that simple to just take a gap year. But there are skills you can build up in the year that would help in college. All I’m saying is don’t take a decision based on what others/the majority thinks. Everybody’s situation is different. You do what you feel would be right for you.

@@tsgoten For a period of time I too was considering taking a gap year. I disagree that this was a poor video. Yes she may have some bias, almost everyone does, but she did raise some valid points. As a pre med student I have absolutely nothing useful I can do during a gap year especially when the hospitals are a high risk place to go to rn. Maybe if you are a CS major or do have some worthwhile online opportunities it may be a good idea to take a gap year. The situation of paying exorbitant amounts for online uni is not ideal but necessary for people like me. Much better than wasting time on your couch.

Hi Brooke, great video. I wanted to ask though, do what you do in gap years affect the way admissions officers see you. For instance, myself I'm done with high school, however, I'm international, and the way we do it is we apply to colleges after high school within our country. But if you are applying abroad to the US for instance, it means you have to take two gap years, that is, one after high school and one after your applications in Aug-Dec. Now, I have gotten admission to a local university in my country-obviously not as great as the US-but school will be starting in April, and I plan of applying in August to US. My question is, given that I've taken few college courses in my country-although I'm not applying as a transfer-how does that read to you: that I've gotten admission in a local university, yet I want to school in the US? How will it impact my chances, or should I not bother indicating I'm in college, and include some Gap year activities I did during that time

As super stressed out as parents and kids are during this pandemic, they should be allowed to take a year off now for the school year 2020-2021, while in grade school, middle school, or high school. Learning (watching teachers attempt to teach) on a tiny 'chromebook' screen is next to impossible as well, especially in Math.
