Huge improvement in just 24 hours. I talk to my boy waaaay to much and the more I do, the more disconnected he becomes. I just wasn't making the connection. Today I kept it to communication he needed and he was checking in more, was faster to respond. Really big improvement. Thanks for this.

My three dogs' commands(15 or so) are in Gaelic. I speak to them in English every day all day just BSing. When I speak Gaelic, they do what I ask and there's no confusion.

I was very scared of big dogs when younger and I fell in love with the rottie when older but didn't want to do things wrong and have a misbehaving dog especially one so large. I'm a dog trainer with over 40 years of experience. My dog is fluid in both English and German in commands that also include hand signals. Moreso when there name precedes further communications. When your dog heals on a suspended bridge while it's swinging unnaturally & still ready for the heavy, human varmit to spring from concealment, let me know. If I happen to clear my throat my dog looks to me to verify all is ok, tail wagging to proceed. I rarely need to say NO to my dog bc ah ah identities I know what your thinking and check your doggie self or I can help you understand with the leash that's always on you. Hope this is taken seriously by your followers. I’m a dog groomer of 30 yrs. A big part of that is training clients to train their dogs to be groomed at home. I no longer bring clients into the shop. I go to the car and pick up their dog at the car. It decreases the owners anxiety of leaving their dog. No more them saying “it’s OK,” 20 times as they walk out the door with their voices getting high each time. No more fast petting their dogs and no more saying “. I’ll be back, she’s your friend”. Dogs are calmer, I’m calmer. Thanks for this video

My smooth collie was perfect. I talked to her all the time. I am pretty sure that's one of the reasons she turned out so good. She never went to obedience school but she was never aggressive and always obedient. The one thing she didn't like was having her nails cut. And you can bet that if I said to her, "Mommy's going to do your nails now, she'd be off the couch in 10 seconds flat." I am pretty sure she understood. If I said, "Let's go in now." She would get up and then we would walk in. She most definitely understood me. I sure miss her! And I still talk to her everyday.

I do the same with people who talk ALL the time. After awhile it truly is just annoying background noise. I can sit with my dogs for hours and only say “you’re a good boy” a couple of times, or, of course, “you need to go potty?”

I've had to explain to "dog people" that my dog is "not a conversational dog" 😂 Like, if you want him not to beg, say "leave it," don't give him a 5 paragraph essay on why he shouldn't be begging because he gets 2 healthy square meals a day and that he would be so privileged to have such a life.

My gsd actually gets worried when I don't talk. I have a velcro puppy who is always listening to me talk. I get expressing worry or anxiety and your point and definitely agree with that, but when you DO have a great relationship with your pup and advanced obedience is top notch, then its clear that "talking" ti my dog gives him happiness. It's a fine line and its your blanket statement that comes off as the type of thing to ruffle feathers :(

I mean, when training I cut out superfluous words, but when we're chilling, I talk to him. He's picked up words that have turned into commands, just completely by accident. I have a great relationship with my dog, he knows that I'm in charge. He just has one specific environmental trigger/fear, at which point I drop communication straight down to leash pressure, because at that point he's not listening anyway because he's too scared.

@@randykoeller5256 Yes it is important (and sad) to be realistic about those kinds of things. I am only in the mid40s, but I just had a disc slip in my back. That was a harsh reminder that I am not young anymore. And it actually has an effect on wich kind of dog I will get next, because it cannot be a big strong one. I think an English Staffordshire would be okay, even though they are strong simply because they are very small and relatively light. But it definitely won't be a rottweiler like I was considering.

I love, love, love your approach! I have a 6 year old nervous, reactive dog and a recently adopted puppy. I'm doing my best to make their lives happy and healthy and your videos have made a difference. I need more time and practice, but I've seen more progress in 2 weeks of implementing your approach than I've seen in years of trying different things to deal with my reactive dog. Soon I think I'll be ready for the reactive to neutral course. I need more practice in not talking to the dogs...simple commands, not complete sentences, and no explanations. I don't need to explain my actions, right? I'm in charge! I feel empowered with this approach and that's not been the case with anything else I've tried.

Dogs communicate to each other through tone and not specific words constantly. Confusing to your dog to make your commands too wordy or to not be conscious of your tone but to say that you talk to your dog too much as a blanket statement is just untrue. Dogs can pick up on so much about energy and environment and situational awareness through tone.

Another aspect of people talking to their dogs is that it tends to make us the humans have a sense of that we ARE telling the dog what we want, that we ARE communicating to them. And we therefore end up never making the effort to really explore all the real possibilities - what really works - in communicating with our dogs.

I started doing this when taking my dog on walks. My dog is leash reactive and pulls like crazy. I've noticed when I only use my voice to give direction/praise on walks he knows to listen because what I'm saying is important and I don't talk to him unless it's important.

Tom dosen't say that talking to your dog is a bad thing if you have a 'healthy relationship' between you and your dog. I noticed that some of my friends who had dogs with behavioural problems talked to their dogs a lot.　And both dogs and the owners were not basically STABLE. It seemed to me that either they got satisfaction from talking to their dogs or they were really talking to themselves. Having a ‘conversation’ with a dog doesn't result in the dog understanding your intended ‘message’. ‘Conversation’ only confuses dogs and makes them anxious. I have lived with LGD breeds such as Kangal and Tornjaks. I feel that LGD breeds have a tendency to gain insight into people's feelings, emotions and behaviour and sense the circumstances with and without talking. However, I believe as Tom says, having a good relationship with your dogs comes first, and talking less helps your dog relax around you.

How do you know who to believe? I just saw a whole article From a scientist that did research about how humans and animals communicate and they said that dogs actually understand a lot more than we think they do. In fact, I know a guy in Canada, who is a huge TikTok Star who talks to his dog in this dog, understands everything this guy says, and they have a fantastic relationship. I talk to my dog all day long and my dog, and I have a great relationship. He understands the majority of what I say.

I talk to my dogs a lot. During the day, it's mostly hi, I see you, you're a good dog, stop that, I wish you wouldn't, and outside. But at night, I do have a full-on monologue with them, the cats, and the bird. It's not me talking to them, but more trying to sort my brain out. I agree that chit chat is meaningless to a dog. If you have a dog for a board and train for a month or more he will not learn English. BUT I talk to my dogs. . . Like I might talk to a two year old. I have had two dogs that easily had a vocabulary. My neighbors’ kids could tell my 12 yr old exactly what to do. Another dog we had knew “do you want to watch TV?”but if we said “we’re playin scrabble”he was bummed out. Not all dogs learn English , although two of mine were somewhat fluent by the time they were 10. Our Aussie never quite caught on. He had much more drive and he had his own agenda. But if you speak consistently, many dogs - like mine - learn phrases like “We’ll be back” “I’m working now” “hit the rack” “Let’s wipe feet”. The Aussie had his own agenda but my literate pups liked to know what was on my agenda.

My opinion. Our Dogs hear us speaking all day. The specific difference, is when you're speaking to your dog speak their language. In your reference to someone speaking another language, they may be easily able to break it down for you, turn to their cousin and speak for another 45 minutes, and your lost. However, You are still involved, not completely left to your own devices. Same concept.

It depends. I did a lot of testing with word comprehension especially with dobies when I was doing rescue and rehab, and I was amazed at how many words they did actually understand. But…I was linking the word to whatever it referred to, and practising regularly, and I speak clearly to them, getting their attention before saying the thing, etc etc. I don’t just woffle at them. My current little dog knows 25 to 30 at least, I haven’t really worked consciously to check, poor guy is going deaf and that doesn’t help! But yes…I used to be constantly saying to people, be quiet…say the command once, then wait. And don’t keep yelling their name 😂 Most humans are annoying background noise to a dog.

I disagree 100% ive been raising and training German shepherds for 50 yrs and i talk to my dogs as if they are people and they are very well behaved and training is easier because as you talk to them they learn both your body language and the tone of your voice which helps them understand what you need them to be doing, my dogs are all working dogs and i very seldom have to give them commands because they understand my movements and tone. No they don't understand the words but they read you.

I was thinking this too. My situation and dog isn’t the same as yours, but there are certain things I say to my dog and they are always accompanied by the same behaviour by me. So it’s not constant chatter all day, and to me dogs are capable of pairing words and behaviour to understand meaning , especially when it is accompanied by reward. I separate training moments so there’s no confusion. But yeah I don’t treat my dog as a therapist so he’s not bombarded with chatter all day so perhaps what’s being talked about here is different ? Not a trainer but I try my best not to confuse my dog and try and teach my family to do the same . 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've done the reactive to neutral course, I've had bad trainers, somewhat good trainers and other online courses. I've spent about 4000 dollars on training. I have an e-collar and a prong collar. He will heel, sit, wait and place (thanks to you) but he is still having a shit show when hee smells or sees another animal. HELP

You should take a look at the current research on how dogs process human language. They used MRI’s and found that dogs actually process language very similar to humans. They just can’t speak back.

I personally have great respect for Tom, but I don't necessarily agree with don't talk to your dog. I do agree start simple... I have an 11 year old German shepherd mix and I spent the first two years of her life purposely teaching her as much English as I could. She doesn't always understand every word but I can see it on her face when she recognizes certain words and phrases so over time I went from for example telling her where I was going and that I'd be back to just telling her I'd be back... so I'd say do talk to your dog just do it intentionally... ❤

I thought this was going to be about, not talking to your dog. It's more don't give soliloquies as commands. Keep commands simple. Since I just lost a dog to a car, and his sister of nearly (just a day shy) of two years hasn't been doing so well. So I've been talking to her and soothing her. That's fine, but I give simple commands. OKAY, as a man who loves foreign films, and being humans, you can understand a lot of foreign films due to our SOCIAL NATURE, that the language barrier doesn't matter as much. Also, as a MAJOR COUNTER ARGUMENT, TONE is more the thing here. Like if you're leaving, you know the dog can't understand, but getting them in the right head space and trying to pacify them may or may not help. They can still pick up tone. Like with my girl and the loss of her brother, I'm more trying to create a soothing tone as I pet her. I know she can't understand everything I say, but she feels confused, so I try to reassure her, and pet her. Also, another MAJOR COUNTER to your take, HUNGER4WORDS kind of proves your theory wrong. That catahoula can string together rather complex, and more complex thoughts than we previously gave dogs credit for.

I'll have my dog off leash in an empty parking lot and I'll say come and 50% of the time he won't come because of reasons then I'll say ok buy Roo and start walking away and then he will come running full speed. Lol he knows what buy means.

I can't agree completely Tom about talking. If an owner is a stable person with energy and purpose, some talk is meant as expressing INTENT. It's not a command, but intent. Words can't be understood, but the intent can. I learned this incidentally saying to a mama cat who was asking for food for her youngsters: Go, catch mouses and bring them! I put a picture of a mouse in the saying. The cat went and from that day on she brought one mouse per cub daily! It happened also with other animals. Same is with a dog. When I say: listen, now I go, here's your snack, take care of the house and don't overdo it! (it's a LS guardian dog). If relationship is normal, a grown dog can often get your intent. If you don't make just a nervous empty chatter. 🖐️

Me to purebred pups. But I just adopted a dog (will call him challenged)from TX. So I have no idea what this dog understands, English, Spanish, after 2 yrs in a kennel. I have had to keep it very simple. Genetics plays a huge role in there learning I've noticed. there age, if you've had it from the beginning or have no idea about its past. Like this one. But now that he's learning what words mean, I'm consistent. I don't ignore him all day but I don't baby talk all day like he's my therapist.

Hi - no, they know very well when you are talking TO THEM, and when you are addressing yourself elsewhere. What you're describing is just a "needy" dog who has learnt to stare you down or bark or paw or something else for attention ;-) . To solve it you can do different things - tell the dog to go to its place, get up and leave the room or, (if the problem is mild), ignore it and see if the dog gives it up voluntarily. ​@@lagottessaGood answer. I also have trained a focus heel with my dogs where I'm telling them to stare at me.😂 It's just that device that I speak in to and stare at too much needs to be taught to the dogs. Work in progress.

Been a dog owner/lover all my 65 years, biggest mistake we all make, trying to “humanize” our four legged companions, their genetically freaking carnivorous wolves. Talking to my dog depends on the situation, on walks out in the public, leash and no leash, ALWAYS involves very simple, the same one, no more than two word commands. Around the house, use the same simple commands, but throw out so many verbs, adjectives, nouns and pronouns I wonder why my very reactive Dutch Shepherd looks at me and implies WTF, yea right😅😅😅

Just curious, I am a dog trainer myself and do not understand how anyone can say that they "know" what a animal thinks, cause you simply don't cause you are not inside their brain!!! Animals deserve more credit than they get !!! I am pretty sure this video needs to be directed at the people that treat dogs like kids and don't understand the fact that a dog will follow you and depends on your leadership and they feed off your emotions, this is for people who don't understand dogs and how to meet their needs 🌹🌹🌹

I don't feel Tom claims to know excactly what the dog thinks. All he's doing is breaking it down in an easy-to-grasp fashion, for anyone to understand why having conversations with your dog don't work. :-)

I feel like you wanted to "ruffle feathers" by just saying dont talk to your dog. Talking is good in some situations because your voice can be a calming thing for them. If your training then short commands are better. Just saying don't talk to your dog , full stop, is just clickbait
