Have you ever tried to propagate Eastern Red Cedar? I have one in the woods behind my house, so I'm giving it a try. Also, how critical is it to have bottom heat right from the beginning? I just ordered the heat mat you suggested, but the cuttings were stuck about 2 weeks ago.
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 2 жыл бұрын
Not a problem at all. You could leave them in the fridge for a year and then put on bottom heat and get them rooting. The 2 weeks without bottom heat, the cells at the cambium level are still down there multiplying and dividing. Bottom heat will just speed it up a little but don't overdo it and try to force them to root faster than nature wants them to. I don't have any Eastern Red Cedar but I do have the Western variety. I can try that one out later in the winter and see what happens. I think it would root like the green giants.

Indoor houseplants a whole different subject. Sitting here typing I'm seeing 27% humidity and all my figs are inside a climate controlled room. 27 degrees and 35% outside. My skin needs water too lol and I have humidifier running 24/7 once a week I water them about 2 cups each and seems to work. I use my Myer's lemon as a gauge and watch for the leaves to droop. On the dormant figs I give 1 cup or less. All depends on the weather at the moment. And Im still learning as I go.

Yes, indoors is completely different as the plants are in an active state of growth and the environment is more like summertime. In the summer, I water almost daily.

Great info yet again, Mike. Even better than the last two winter’s videos! I understand you’re in 8B, but I believe those same principles apply no matter what zone. Here in zone 4, Obviously I just don’t water when it’s frozen. But I do top the pots with snow, 1. it helps insulate them and 2. it’ll help water the plant during the thaw before I can dig my hose out of the snow. (Hehe) I sure do appreciate you, Mike. Merry Christmas from the Yetis to the Kincaids.

I'm in NY and have some perennials that I started from seed in the beginning of the year, and they are still quite small. I have them stored in one of those 5' greenhouses that has a plastic cover over it to protect them from the weather. I watered them about a month ago on a warmer day, but worry with such cold temps that the water will freeze and kill the plants. Lately, we have been in the 30s and 40s during the day and in the 20s during the night, but can get into the teens. Do you think I need to worry about the water freezing during the winter if I water when it's above freezing, but then freezes at night? TIA.
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 2 жыл бұрын
It's ok if the pots freeze but you're right to not water just right before a freeze. You don't want to create ice cubes, lol. Too much water could cause problems. I like to water when I know there's a few days or a week before freezing weather and that gives all the excess water time to drain.

Hi Mike - Thank you for such informative videos. You are a guiding light !! This is a bit off topic for this video, but here it goes. I am going to be propagating fig cuttings using your method, and will be putting the propagation boxes in my garage, with a rubberized heating pad you had suggested. I live in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County, and the lows at night can get into the mid-30's on occasion, but generally stay in the mid to low 40's, with Winter daytime highs in the high 50's to low 70's (Zone 10a). I will be putting these cuttings in my unheated garage. Will they root in those night time temps, with my continuous heating pad running 24/7 on low ? Or is that too much of a differential in temperature, assuming the heating pad will get up to around 70-80 degrees at the bottom of the propagation box. I will set them on a small wooden pallet as you had suggested, to prevent from overheating. Your assistance would be most appreciated.
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like similar temps that I had when I made that video. I don't think you'll have a problem at all with a little fluctuation, and that's why I recommend insulating the cups with more material. The main points are to keep the bottoms warm and the tops cool. The bottoms should be somewhere around 10 degrees warmer than the tops of the cuttings but it's ok for the temps as a whole to fluctuate some. Just don't try to force roots to fast. Let them take their time rooting and you'll be happier in the end. It's ok if it takes 6 to 8 weeks to root, nothing is wrong.

Hello Mike, I live on the east coast and my porch faces the Atlantic so I get quite a bit of salt air. My question; why is it that regular ivy thrives but English ivy hardly grows. It has been replanted but still looks bad. Also, we have several walnut trees that produce a good yield every year. Is that typical so close to the ocean? Cheers and Happy Holidays
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 2 жыл бұрын
Happy Holidays, Michael. To be honest, I'm so unfamiliar with the growing conditions in your area that it would be tough for me to comment on those questions. I know some plants do better in coastal regions and the plant species will change drastically just 20 or 30 minutes inland. I'm sure the salt spray and sandy soil has something to do with it.

Rule of thumb states that if you overwinter a shrub (of any kind) in a pot outdoors, as long as the plant is hardy to 2 zones below your own, it will survive in the pot without additional protection. For example, if you are in zone 8 and the shrub in your pot is hardy in zone 6, it will do just fine in the pot outdoors throughout the winter.
