Masking for COVID? Should I wear a mask? Cochrane reviews are considered one of the best in evidence-based medicine. The medical community considers them the gold standard in medicine due to their methodology, thoroughness, and transparency. This past week they have updated their evidence on masking for influenza and COVID. It is based on randomized controlled studies not flawed, biased observational studies.

You have my gratitude and respect, sir, for promoting rigorous critical thinking and the highest ethical standards. I believe it is time for alternative voices such as yours to collectivize with other like-minded professionals active in the media space. The pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities and flaws in established institutional structures; too many questions of breech of trust will cripple the medical and lay communities for some time to come. At the very least, robust alternative sources can fill the gap as legacy systems are repaired.

"Pandemics...happen periodically" -- yeah, with like 100 years between, so far. So why aren't we seeing CoV-19 as endemic, AKA learn to live with what we always have, common cold & flu? Then why don't we push to end that utmost scary "gain of function" research, so to stop the potential weaponizing of viruses against the public, as news items seem to be indicating?

Obviously, the Bangladesh study is poorly randomized. But it represents a huge percentage of the population. Also, it represents the reality of how people live. Even if there were some evidence that masking could help under perfect practice, essentially nobody is going to employ perfect practice.

Thank you for this video. I am a 73 year old retired physician. Many years ago physicians were all required to attend a series of lectures on pandemic preparedness. I learned that regular surgical masks did little to nothing in prevention of contagion. When mask mandates came with covid pandemic, I was very skeptical, especially when the internet exploded with advice on making your own cloth masks (useless). Also, I was disgusted by how many people went around with their noses poking out over the top of their masks, or the mask hanging below their chin! I also noted constant touching and pulling at their masks, thus increasing contamination of their hands. I am aware of several studies that common cold viruses (many are coronavirus ) are primarily spread by touching, contact from contaminated hands. As a pediatrician, I saw thousands of children with colds, yet I rarely caught colds from my patients, due to careful hand hygiene. I thought all physicians should know these facts, and wondered why the medical providers and organizations did not speak out about this!?! I know that those who tried were bullied for doing so. 😬

Dr. thank you for speaking the truth! As a medic in the VietNam war, I was taught that a virus had no antidote, and you just had to outlast it, and the virus was much too small to be contained by the surgical face masks we used. The Medical profession went for the money that was offered for falling under the umbrella of untruths that the Government dumped on us, and if they wanted to get paid the big bucks, hospitals had to enforce the masking mandates. It has completely ruined the professions of medical personnel that fell for the crap, and chose to go with the money flow. Trust in the Medical community has been very badly compromised, and the real problem is that it won't be reinstated for generations because of the number of medical professionals who still subscribe to the foolishness of the masking mandates. Proof is that masks DO NOT stop the virus from spreading, nor do they keep one from being infected. Thanks again for being truthful.

Back in the 90's I was a paramedic, and one class we had to repeat every year to keep our license was to re-certify on the subject of PPE (Personal Protection Equipment). One of the very first things they teach you is cloth masks do NOT protect against viruses. Viruses pass through a cloth mask like water through a screen door. To illustrate how incredibly small a virus is, one instructor told us to imagine you are a virus, and and then imagine the buildings lining the roads are the fibers in a cloth mask. Now imagine walking down the CENTER of the street with your arms stretched out horizontally and try to touch the buildings on each side of the road with your finger tips. That's how easily a virus passes between the fibers of a cloth mask, almost like the fibers aren't even there.

I went to a GP here in Australia to get a mask exemption because I had to travel and would have been fined for not wearing a mask, I was made to wait outside, the Dr came out, handed me a mask and told me to "hold it up in front of my face as I walk through the waiting area so it looks like I'm wearing it" I already knew masks were useless but this just confirmed what I was thinking all along, and that was. 1.People who wore masks did it so it appeared like they were doing something. 2. People wore them because they were being threatened with fines and they didn't want the hassle of dealing with the authorities. I flew several times during covid, I never wore a mask, I was treated very poorly by airport security and the Police, I got some very interesting looks as I walked up the isle of the plane maskless, it's amazing how quickly people turn into sheep. My opinion is that we experienced a form of mass psychosis during covid, the truth was covered up, banned, censored and you were ridiculed if you tried to tell people they were being manipulated lied to and coerced. The big problem here is the lack of research during the epidemic to obtain far more accurate conclusive and specific information going forward. In Victoria, Australia we were legally only allowed to go outside for one hour a day! I never understood that. Surely walking in the fresh air is essential when you are prohibited from working or seeing friends or relatives. Even though I am not a medical practitioner I can clearly see that walking outside with or without a mask is completely harmless. We catch colds through close contact with people INSIDE not outside, we can catch respiratory illnesses from being outside but that’s from the air, not from other people, not sure why COVID was any different. I hate to say it as I am not a Trump supporter, but he was right in the end. It came, it went. Some people died, and people in their thousands still die of the flu even today. If the goal was to stop droplets then a breathable material would be adequate. There would be an incentive to increase adoption by using natural and breathable materials, a comfortable loose strap etc. The design is simply a weaopn. The 0% efficacy is evidence they are designed to harm since the entire placebo effect (plus nocebo effect among controls) is counteracted. There would be an incentive to generate study results with greater than 0% efficacy if the stated aim was true. Either side of 0% would be no good if there was malicious intent. Hi Doc I'm a retired Firefighter and house painter on off days. I almost always used N95 masks when I would be prep sanding before putting a finish coat of paint on the trim. Now remember I was a Firefighter at the time so I used SCBA's almost every other day. I was personally fitted with a particular face mask so it would properly fit my face. The problem with the highly effective Self Contained Breathing Apparatus is that no matter how form fitting it is, when you turn your head your facial skin will deform and leaks occur. To combat that problem SCBA manufacturers started using Positive Pressure techniques. That is, when a leak occurred, and they ALWAYS DO, pressure in the mask was higher than the outside of the mask and so compressed air would flow out of the mask. That difference in Positive Pressure meant that no contamination would leak back into the mask. That is a life saving feature for Firefighters as we work in toxic atmospheres. Now with all that said, the next day I would go back to my house painting duties. I would put on a certified N95 mask and start prep sanding. At the end if the day, usually 7 to 8 hours of almost continuous sanding and use of an N95 mask, I would find a small trail of paint dust from sanding along the outside of the mask leading directly to the inside of each nostril. I tried for many weeks and probably months to stop that from happening. It is in my experience that the mask helped a little but, the end result was, I ALWAYS got paint dust in my nose and therefore into my respiratory system. Now, if we compare the particle size of paint dust, which BTW I we can actually see, to the vastly smaller size of ANY VIRUS, which one cant see without a highly sophisticated microscope, one can conclude it is FUTILE to try to keep out viral particles from entering into our respiratory system by wearing an N95 mask. So, I can say for me and my experiences, no mask, other than a certified SCBA utilizing Positive Pressure means, and fitted to the individual wearing it, would ever be protective enough to make any difference at all. I did not take the shot for Covid, and did not get covid. My years of study on the benefits of supplementation and the copious use of atomized spraying of Colloidal Silver into my nose, eyes, and throat while Breathing in, helped me, along with Trust and Prayer to my God for protection, was my go to intervention. Thanks for your views and analysis of these studies.

If I had tried to use them in industry I would have been prosecuted under health and safety legislation. Hi, N95 filtering facepieces are better than loose-fitting surgical masks, but not perfect. Manufacturers cannot fit every facial size or shape even with a range of products, and for the highest protection, fit testing prior to use is best. Did this observation occur at work, where you were required to wear a respirator for the exposure that you faced? If so , then your employer should be following requirements set out in US regulations or Canadian standards covering medical evaluation, training, selection for type and appropriate size, fit testing - either with a bitter or sweet aerosol, or using an instrument, maintenance and record-keeping. A poor fit should be addressed under these protocols. If at home, you can possibly get improved fit by picking a size to best match your face, and donning and positioning straps in accordance with user instructions. You can assess fit with a seal check (blocking as much as possible and sharply breathing in or out) to see if there are any overt leaks before you use the product - manufacturers provide guidance on that and on adjustments to improve fit. Also changing the respirator if it gets obviously misshapen, dirty or hard to breathe through minimizes the chance of leakage around the seal. And being clean-shaven where the respirator contacts the face is necessary for a good seal. A better fit may be obtained by switching to a silicone or similar half-mask, which is more flexible than most filtering facepieces and can fit contours of the face better. Most come with one or two replaceable filters - N95s are available, but usually higher grade P100s are offered which have higher efficiency and protect against welding fume as well. Filters often last longer than a typical N95 filtering facepiece and can be replaced, while the mask part can be cleaned are re-used. For the long-term, such models may be more economical too, and if fitted with an exhalation valve, are often more comfortable. You can also fit them other types of filters, if needed, to remove odours for painting or varnishing jobs which N95s or P100s won't capture.

@@johnbuchman4854 The studies only show whether something works, not how. There are interventions which are known to be effective, yet the mechanism remains unknown. This is the case for many medications for cancer to general anaesthesia drugs. In this case, respiratory diseases also spread when droplets land on a person's hands and they rub their eyes, mouth and nose, which could be why regular handwashing helps to reduce the spread. Covering the mouth any nose with cloth has only been studied here, yet other countries tried plastic face shields. It would be interesting to see if they have any effect. At the beginning of the Covid mess, I asked a friend who works in a bio lab questions about masks. They work with all kinds of viruses as well as other research. She said that when they are working with viruses the ONLY way to not get exposed is with full "hazmat" type suits. A cloth mask or paper mask cannot stop the tiny particles of viruses. Then on top of that she said that people going around with masks are actually "trapping" other things and that those types of masks if they are to stop anything such as pollen or dust, have to be changed quite often or they are useless as well. So, None of our family did the mask thing except to be able to enter a business and we kept full boxes of them as well as latex gloves in our car. I thought then that gloves were going to be much more useful as our hands touch so many things when we are out and about. When we exited a business the gloves and the mask were put into zip lock bags and thrown in the trash in our garage when we got home. We had one family member just starting cancer treatments with Chemo and Radiation. His cancer doctors advised him not to get the shots. Over the course of Covid and as recently as last spring all three of us tested positive and the only one that did have any symtoms at all was the person going through cancer treatments. It was not bad and he got over it in less than 8 days, myself and the other person in our home never had any symptoms at all even though we tested positive. So, my conclusion that masks are not helpful still stands and if it happens that businesses demand mask wearing to enter, I will go back to ordering most of what we need online and having it delivered. We are retired so it is not a problem to simply stay out of public unless really necessary to do so. None of us got the shots either and do not plan to do so. My daughter who has MS of the episodic type took the shots and her MS went from zero problems for years to now she has had three serious remissions since taking the shots. I begged her to not take them, but she fell prey to the panic. Now she wishes she had not taken them. It has now been found that not only blood clots, or cardiac problems have happened even causing death, but that anyone with a neurological problems such as MS probably should not take the shots. We keep our immune systems healthy y not eating junk, we get plenty of exercise and we also take supplements such as Vit D and Zinc AFTER we have had the right bloodwork done to determine if we are low on vitamins or minerals and we do so as our own family doctor directs us. The human body was created to self cure itself in most ways, so I am sticking with the Creator's plan of taking care of the body I have been given and not abusing foods or drugs that interfere with the body's ability to heal itself. I would sooner trust my Creator than some politicians or so called experts who have an agenda.

I'm no expert, but I learned about things like Ebola starting in High School after reading "The Hot Zone" for a class. We also had some sort of virus sweep through my high school one year, impacting the school for a month, with no education happening for 2wks in the middle when too many students were out of class. It had a typically 2wk symptom period. Never was able to go back and figure out what it was. But I only had symptoms for 1.5days. But our response was to let it run its course and burn itself out. That's when my fascination with infectious disease, quarantine, etc. began. Studying events like the Black Plague, Small Pox in teh Americas, Ebola outbreaks, and more. Why did I have symptoms for so short a time when everyone else was averaging 2wks? So I started studying immune systems and factors. I've kept up with this stuff ever since, multiple decades now. I also served in the military and did the NBC training, and we even encountered a few chemical attacks in Iraq. And of course the whole anthrax scare after 9/11, and I experienced the whole military anthrax vaccine fiasco. We also had to deal with tuberculosis and got the Small Pox vaccine in the military (I served with people who contracted TB on deployments). I've of course also studied vaccines. I was trying my best to inform people on masks during COVID to little effect. I'm also now a Mechanical Engineer and put this skills to work looking at filtration, airflow, and more to show the masks didn't work as advertised. Even going into explaining viral load, asymptomatic people vs symptomatic people, etc. I never wore a mask during COIVD except in cases of coercion/duress/threat.

Oral Health Review had a great study on masks by dentists. The conclusion of the study found they didn't stop transmission of anything. This was in 2016 - and unfortunately they took the article about the study down during the pandemic due to "the climate" - in other words it would have been politically incorrect to leave it up. It's a black eye to OH that they took it down. It was an excellent article. Masks don't work for people in everyday life because the masks they were encouraging us to wear didn't stop viruses in the first place - and everyone isn't wearing the accompanying garb: booties, gowns, bonnets, goggles, gloves, etc., and are picking up the aerosols on their clothing, skin, hair, etc., and getting viral particles in other mucous membranes like eyes. they are also transferring viral particles and aerosols to other locations because they don't change like nurses and doctors in hospitals do. It's shameful that health officials didn't think about this when they were forcing masks on all of us. Someone should have known - or perhaps they did and just wanted to control us anyway.

The senior management were more liberal in their efforts to persuade people to stick to the rules as much as possible. No bullying, hectoring or intimidation should be allowed in any workplace but it does happen. The hand washing item is interesting. I have seen mask wearers constantly rubbing their hands on their faces and then handling items such as pens doorknobs etc, thus spreading infection by this route. It is part of mask protocol NOT to touch the mask once put on and to sanitise hands before and after donning and doffing the mask. It seems to me that most people conformed to the optics by wearing masks which was something that could be observed and remarked upon but skipped the hand sanitisation which was something that could not be observed by an inspector and remarked upon.

Most healthcare establishments have infection control programs, of which some kind of mask wear, under prescribed circumstances, is usually a part. Compliance is always an issue in such programs. But if compliance is good they can help to reduce infections, both to staff and between patients. The benefit is rather limited for viral agents, but those certainly aren't the only ones present in clinical settings. General public mask wear is useless at limiting aggregate infection rates though.

I told my manager to check our numbers and get back to me when he could prove we were moving slower. They used to fall back to the droplet argument. However then why make them so difficult to breath thru? They don't fall back anymore because the chain link fence argument is preferable due to the above question and is itself a fall back. It is all like that. Pretty much every argument from both sides was centrally planned to be fall back after fall back each pushing towards the goals. Note it is a fall back that was used by the supposed opposition that was the preferable fallback to the one used by advocates. The chain link fence argument helps to promote tightening of the material which would increase the level of co2 breathed whereas the droplets argument undermines tightening. It is however the apparent position of the CDC,, WHO, NIH, NHS etc who are not here pointing it out. They are perfectly happy with the fallback of chainlink fence despite the negative impact of tight materials on health.

Thanks so much for this information. Three major harms of masks are (1) the political harm of compelling people to do an intervention which damages personal freedom, sometimes even using brutality and force tactics (2) the serious psychological harm of having everyone covering their face in public (and frightening millions into doing so in private as well). The worst damage would be to young people and very small children, but we are all harmed by not seeing human faces. Our social order is already very disconnected and mechanized, and masking only makes this terrible situation worse. (3) Last, masks have also proven to be yet another source of personal and political polarization which further fractures an already disunited country. I would point out that all three of these harms benefit political leftism, which serves as by far the most plausible explanation of why it was so heavily pushed by globalist types of politicians.

Maybe that number has dropped now, but it is also a helluva coincidence that people shut up right when the Ukraine war started. It was literally overnight. But they kept saying to "follow the science". I also do not go to stores that harassed me into using them.

The only question is whether masks, any mask, can/do stop virus particles & unfortunately the answer is NO.

Dr. Moran, I just want to say thanks for your delivery and approach of down the middle, looking at and reading the evidence and letting the patient choose what's best for them. Sadly, I think physicians like you are becoming more and more rare. I love my PCP, she tells me how to deal with things like strengthening my immune system so it's ready for anything, risk vs. reward on medicating, etc. Love the holistic, preventative care you share with us. You have a lot of supporters. God bless!

Washing your hands is ABSOLUTELY one of the best protections you have from illness. I learned this quickly working in gyms. You don’t need to be a germaphobe but some general habits like washing my hands every time I come back into the house from being out along with opening door handles with my sleeves was an absolute game changer for me years before the pandemic ever hit.

Covid was a respiratory virus, it’s great you wash your hands but it did ZERO to protect you from Covid. It was just as useless as wearing a mask to protect you from Covid.

Which is exactly why the study he cited at the end with Healthcare works had nothing to do with a reduction in infection because of masks -- it's because those in Healthcare wash their hands before and after dealing with every single person they come into contact with.

@@linanicolia1363yes .nothing can stop airborne viruses . Viruses enter your body via your eyes Little inconvenient truth that nobody wants to talk about . Masks are absolutely useless . Sergions masks are used to not contaminate open wounds and not against viruses. And people believe of a surgeons wear masks it is probably because of viruses . Nobody will allow sick surgeon to work by wearing a mask

Doc. Great info, so if my patient has an immune compromised issue, does this mean we do not recommend masking to prevent any possibility of my patient getting sick? If so, our hospital policy will need up dating along with other research in this area that needs to be corrected.

I refused to wear a mask at my job and I didn't take the clot shot. My boss asked me once if I would do both and said they may have to let me go if I refuse...I told him that I want the studies of the clot shots before I took that shit because I couldn't find any when I searched for it online, he said he'd get back to me and I never got asked about it again...they even got to the point the company was offering 500$ bonuses on your check when you provided proof of jab status to HR. I still said my fellow employees were not very wise to take them up on that offer. If they have to bribe you to do it, it's probably not a good idea...

I never thought the mask was in any real way helpful. I thought of it as a way to keep us fearful. A reminder that is hard to breathe through, stuck right on our faces. A frightened population is much easier to control.

@@lkytmryan There is a great deal of evidence to suggest that the real purpose of our politics is to divide us. When it gets to the point that we're shooting one another, then, the administration will have to declare martial law. That is the real goal.

As a physicist who learned about the "physics" of masks, using information published before COVID lock-downs, such as it is, I was not fooled. I was forced to wear useless masks at work and other public places even though they are ineffective (except for N95, which are unbearable when worn properly). Complained about the forced masking continuously, to no effect. Kept my distance in order to not get infected.

If it makes you feel better, not even N95 was perfect, it filtered 95% of stuff that was at the size of 300 nanometers and the efficiency apparently diminish rapidly the tinier something is, guess covid's size, yeah that's right, it's only 120 nanometer, just do the math and laugh.

I feel like theres a world of difference between a vented N95 and an unvented N95 mask when worn for extended periods of time. The job I was working and quit right at the end of 2019 I was wearing a vented N95 mask when rolling stencils on cargo containers and its was decently comfortable for the hours a day I wore it, at least as far as wearing a face sealing for inhalation mask goes. when they ran out of them for a week, I had to wear unvented N95 masks for a bit and they were unbearable

Washing hands, keeping distance and being polite when coughing sneezing makes more sense than masks if you want to reduce transmission, in any case a virus will find a way, better to have less lethal but more transmissable disease.

See above a Firefighter explanation of N95 masks under "fuzfire". In the documentation given on the box or package of N95 masks it clearly says they might not perform as well as in test labs. That is a way of saying "no mask can do what it says in lab experiments ". Nuff said!

I only put on a mask when compelled to, to get on a bus or enter a store. I didn't buy the whole Pandemic thing, from the beginning. But then, ive avoided doctors my whole life - I'm 76 and healthy. No Jabs for me! No COVID either. I'm amazed at at how many people still wear Masks. And last week i stopped in a Café which had a sign MASK RECOMMENDED. I left.
