Cmon Tim Duncan is who you’re questioning? Duncan never missed the playoffs. Only season he didn’t win 50+ games was the lockout season in 1999 and won the championship. 2 blocks away from a quadruple double in a close out game in the Finals. Shaq should be in the top ten as well but not replacing Duncan.

I’m ok with Tim Duncan being underrated because he wasn’t flashy but he 100% should be in the top 10 all time with ease. Constant winning season every year, title contender, MVP’s, 5 rings, turned that small market franchise upside down into one of the greatest winning franchises, never switched teams, and not to mention was an elite defender and even a very formidable rim protector late in his career who could still put up points efficiently when given the attempts.

I recently realized as an Orlando Magic fan, the late Kobe Bryant was my most favorite player of all-time. Whenever I spent my hard-earned money on limited game ticket packages each year, I always demanded that a Lakers game had to be included. Each Magic vs Lakers game was worth every cent I spent for that ticket. The late Kobe Bryant was so amazing to watch live.

Even MJ himself said at Kobe’s very first all start game “that laker boy gon take anyone 1 on 1 … “ and Kobe wasn’t even at his peak then …. Greatness recognizes greatness … and the fact is that Kobe was the only one who came anywhere near MJ greatness.. he even droped a 50 piece on his biggest mentor as a farewell gift. I'm old enough to remember back when Kobe was in his prime, everyone had him in the top 5 players of all time, many in the top 3. In fact, when Kobe had just made it to the Finals against the Celtics for the first time, the media was asking if he wins 4, would he be #1 or #2 against Jordan. Unfortunately for him, they lost to the Celtics, and the media kind of chilled out. Even though he went on to win 2 more rings, people mostly kept him top 3 or top 5. But Lebron started taking over, we never got the Kobe vs Lebron finals we wanted, and over time he dropped further down the list. It's just crazy to me that NOW the same media acts like they weren't drooling all over him that whole time. Even when Lebron was in the NBA taking his team to the Finals, Kobe was being called the best in the league. But after getting swept by the Mavs in the playoffs while being defending champs, that narrative disappeared & the media decided to just move on.
@str8duval
@str8duval 2 жыл бұрын
Actually that's not true. ESPN and particularly has never had Kobe rated even in the top 5. You might have an individual guy like Mark Jackson who would question if he was good at Jordan but he was never anywhere near rated top three or even top 5. I can literally show you list from multiple Outlets and some of them didn't even have Kobe in the top 10. And this was like 10 or 12 years ago

@@str8duval Incorrect. I don't care what ESPN's "lists" said, I'm talking about what they were saying on all the talk shows & the pre-Finals breakdowns & all over the sports world. Individual analysts CONSISTENTLY would debate him vs Jordan, and many would even throw out things like "he's the better offensive player" quite often. You can find clips of these debates all over the place. When Phil & Shaq left, Kobe dragged the Lakers with Smush Parker, Luke Walton, Kwame Brown, etc. to the playoffs & nearly beat the Suns on his own. People used to downplay that, but then over time you saw that narrative change too. Even without other stars, you need strong role players. People saw how stacked the West was, & Kobe stayed put anyway. Without any other star or capable role player, Lebron struggled even worse in the West. When AD & the squad was healthy, the won another title. I clearly remember these discussions, because at the time I *HATED* the guy. I'll be the first to admit being one of those guys who hated the top player for always keeping my favorites down. As a 6-13 year old, hated Jordan. As a 13-25 year old, hated Kobe. Since the minute he was playing, hated Brady. But I can at least respect them & give them their praise. They earned it.

100% Tim Duncan so underrated. Man NEVER MISSED THE PLAYOFFS!!! On top of that, the distance between him and the next Power Forward of all time is so much greater than any other position. With literally every other position, you can have legitimate debates as to who is the greatest. Everybody knows that Tim Duncan is the greatest PF of all time there is no debate there. Kobe is amazing, but the consistency Tim Duncan had and his ability to do just about everything whether that be shoot, assist, dribble, rebound, block, steal, etc.
@askask2721
@askask2721 2 жыл бұрын
Just because he isn't always in the media doesn't mean he should be underrated or forgot about. It's the same thing that we have discussions about when you try to erase parts of a country's history by not talking about it or pulling down statues. Just because those public monuments are no longer there doesn't mean that the people who they represented didn't exist and the history didn't happen and both the good and bad don't deserve to be talked about and all of a sudden they no longer deserve their monuments for the good they did in history just because there were certain bad things about them, like slaveholding presidents or Sir John A. Macdonald and residential schools who still did a lot of good for their respective countries and deserve public monuments. We should continue discussions about these topics while also mentioning their flaws, and the same thing applies here. Larry Bird chose to keep quiet after retirement and that doesn't mean that we should forget about him or disrespect him. Just because Larry has been fairly quiet and not going after big business ventures in retirement like Magic has, doesn't mean that he should stopped being talked about and be underrated. You don't need to be a showman to be a good NBA athlete. Magic is amazing, but Bird is either slightly better, just as good, or slightly below him. They're 1a and 1b. There's ALOT of recency bias in this list.

@@Johenz Duncan didn’t dominate for a longer period tho. Duncan’s prime was from like 99-07. While Kobe was from like 00-13. Duncan lost in the 1st round 3 times in career and Kobe only did twice. The difference was Kobe was playing on terrible rosters that tbh had no business even making the playoffs while Duncan and the Spurs were losing as favorites (09’, 11’). In 11’ Duncan lost as #1 seeds to a 8 seed (only happened 1 other time in NBA history). When it comes to Total accolades (MVPs, FMVPs, Chips, Stat Leader, DPOY, ROY, All NBA, All Defense, All-Star selections, All Star MVPs, etc.) It’s close, Kobe has 61 to Duncan’s 58. When it comes WINNING head to head matchups in the playoffs (where it matters most), Kobe won 4 out of 6 vs Duncan. Kobe always torched the Spurs and was almost always the best player in the series. As far as EYE TEST, Kobe was the best offensive player and one of the better defenders in the NBA at times during his career. Kobe was getting 1st team defense while also being a league leader in scoring. Duncan can’t say that. Prior to that Larry Bird was three time MVP in a row, and the other four times he didn't get the MVP he was second. So for 7 years of the 80s bird was either MVP or came down to 2nd. And birdie was the better defender. He was three times all defensive team. The dude was a all around score, the second best passer in the '80s, and he wasn't second fiddle to Kareem. I can show you countless of evidence.

The only reason why people remember magic as a better player was because he played with more charisma and was more charismatic towards the media. He had the shinier personality. Bird was highly disliked by the media and didn't like talking to them. He hated attention to the point that he left Indiana State because they were too many people. The magic was the opposite. 1. Michael Jordan 2. Lebron James 3. Kareem Abdul Jabbar 4. Bill Russell 5. Shaquille O'Neal 6. Magic Johnson 7. Larry Bird 8. Hakeem Olajuwon 9. Kobe Bryant 10. Tim Duncan Honorable Mentions: Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Wilt Chamberlain Edit: After seeing a lot of folks list, Hakeem is the most wildly underrated player. He went to 3 finals as the best player, won 2 incredibly difficult championships in '94 and '95, one without a single all-star on his team, and another as a 6 seed (lowest seeded champion ever) having no home court advantage every series. In that run, he went through an absurdly talented gauntlet of HOF big men including just absolutely dominating a prime David Robinson and Patrick Ewing, and getting the better of a near prime Shaq. I think everyones aware of how good his post game was, but what's not mentioned is he is also one of greatest defensive players of all time. He was an absurdly good ahot blocker with also incredible mobility. I honestly could easily see an argument for having him top 5 all time, and I think it's absurd he's not in most peoples top 10.

Kobe Bryant is no less than top 8 all time. That being said it’s important to note that when talking about the greatest players in the history of a sport, particularly in a sport that that has such a rich long history, the difference between the top 10-12 guys is virtually nothing.

Good comment I say this all the time. A sport where thousands of ppl have played in you have fans that will argue between where they place top 10 players. Lol The argument between lebron and Jordan is actually nonsense no matter where you place the two idc if you think one is 10th. The gap between the two could be splitting hairs anyone regarded by most as a top 10 player at that point is a matter of preference when it comes to where a fan would place them. Who am I to argue with a older person that says Bill Russell is the greatest when I too have him in my top 10 also.

Also KD would have another ring with the Nets if Giannis didn’t slide from the baseline to stand under kyrie on purpose so he could get hurt. Also you can’t say that about KD without disputing Lebrons position cuz he is the king of teaming up with people! But I do agree with you on Shaq. Idk how he is not top 5.
