Protein sensitivity is a term that seemed to pop-up out of nowhere. Is it a real thing? Should low porosity hair types stay away from protein treatments?

I'm low porous, but I'm not afraid of protein treatments, nor do I have problems with protein treatments. I use them very frequently, as I make the protein treatments myself. I *always* deep-condition afterwards. This is the reason why I have maximum length retention.

I’m a low porosity and I’ve used a particular deep conditioner that contains proteins and my hair is STRONG! I do notice one or two of my hair strands looking “straight” like the curl pattern was disturbed but generally my hair feels stronger, I didn’t experience any breakage and my shedding was normal. My hair did feel a little coarse so I won’t be using the deep conditioner frequently. But I was under the impression that I have low porosity hair and should never use proteins, but I decided just to experiment on my hair to see first hand what are the effects and not just go with the internet hype. I appreciate this video and continue to bless us with great content.

Michelle's Daughter Nape breakage is usually from physical damage. Either from the hair style your wearing putting too much tension on that sensitive area or perhaps that area is drying out from not wearing a head scarf at night or not moisturizing it. Take a closer look at everything you are doing or not doing that’s causing that area to be dry.

Looking forward to that video because I'm low porosity and my hair is very protein sensitive. I haven't done a protein treatment in a long time. So two weeks ago I decided to do a protein treatment only because I'm constantly hearing of its importance. Big mistake!! The ends of my hair got very matted and I've gotten so many single strand knots which makes detangling a pain.

Ekaete Udoh Oh! My curls elongated, no more single strand knots, no breakage, awesome flexibility & malleability. 😀 I always use Argan oil as heat protectant, wash/style every two weeks, monthly clarifying shampoo & bi monthly rice water treatment. Not to forget I massage with tea tree scalp oil every other night. I stay off doing wash n gos (to prevent knots) & only wear single strand braids/twists/cornrows.
@eudoh21
@eudoh21 4 жыл бұрын
Iriowen Wallace thank you for answering back! I have a couple more questions because I’m actually quite interested: - are you training by blow drying or flat ironing, - do you wear it in the straight or do you go straight into the braids and twist like you said, and - do you notice your retaining length?
@truthprevail5667
@truthprevail5667 4 жыл бұрын
Ekaete Udoh You’re welcome! I blow dry only with a nozzle attached facing the direction of my cuticles so as to lay them down (I learnt it from green beauty). I don’t flatiron because it’s work (for me) trying to wrap it every night. I blowing dry each sections before I do single braid or twist, on days when I wear wigs (without combs) I put them in cornrows. Since my major concern is preventing breakage to retain length, I always seal hair & ends with a moisturizing oil blend.
@Nghilifa
@Nghilifa 4 жыл бұрын
I think my hair is at the "extreme end" of the low porosity side of that chart. I can shower, moisturize and seal it with some kind of oil (usually shea butter) , and I can STILL feel the oil in my hair the day after, sometimes two days after (even when I use lighter oils, such as jojoba etc) . My hair also takes several hours to dry after showering it too..

When I started learning about my hair and even up until last year I never heard about protein treatments and had always used moisturising deep conditioner. And I've never had any issues cuz I realised with some of the products I had such as my leave ins had different types of hydrolysed proteins in them lol. But I am going to be incorporating some protein treatments in my hair probably about once a month at first and if I need to do it more often I will! :)

Thanks for finally addressing this. I’m medium/low porosity and density hair. But my hair has never been so strong as I saw your channel about the importance of a real protein treatment. @@ThatGirlJD Low Porosity fine hair needs and loves protein treatments BUT the size of the proteins are very important when you're fine texture. Only proteins with smaller molecules (anything hydrolyzed, gelatin, henna, cassia...) will work for you. If your hair isn't accepting many proteins, I'm sure your hair also doesn't like coconut oil (oil with bigger molecules). When you're low po, people assume you have coarse hair so sometimes the hair guidance is inaccurate for us fine textured girls.

Viviolay -Violet great observation. How thick each individual hair stand is does effect its fragility. Porosity is not just about having flat cuticle layers ... it’s also about the amount of cuticle layers you have (ie. ‘Thickness’) that’s why I made the Complete Hair Type Chart that way. There are different types of Low Porosity naturals, we don’t all fit into one box

I got that from doing black rice & regular rice deep conditioning hair masks (with heat), & also rice milk & rice water rinses. Scalp massages & hot oil treatments helped, too. That's my 2 bits.. 😘

Please I need your help with this question: In testing for porosity, after leaving the hair strand in water for some minutes (10 - 20 mins), should I attempt to poke...push the strand so it sinks? I REALLY need your reply.
@gentlestormwyatt

No need to do anything. If your hair is high in porosity, it will sink on its own.

kit to the kat you may need protein. Also get your iron checked. That can definitely cause shedding. Or you need a moisturizing treatment. Hope this helps ❤️

Does anyone have tips to reverse the effects of protein overload? I have low porosity hair, and did a protein treatment. Now my hair is hard 😢. I used a clay wash and used a moisturizing deep conditioner, but it still feel dry. I’ve been misting with water frequently and sealing, but don’t know what else to do 🤷🏾‍♀️

Kiss My Coils I went through the same thing and it took me several wash days for it to correct. I just followed my regular regimen, making sure there was no protein in my items. I especially didn’t miss a moisturizing deep conditioning.

I'm still struggling to identify my hair porosity so I've settled with medium... However, I have just finished the first phase of an experiment to determine what was causing my fine hair strands to fuse together and my hair to fall out in huge chunks after deep conditioning. This began happening a year ago. And...it was protein. I was using a shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioners and leave in with keratin and my hair could not take it. I would detangle my hair after pre-pooing and very little hair shed/breakage. After gentle shampooing, some hair shed, nothing worrying. Always after deep conditioning I would have thick clumps of hair in the bath and while styling (protective - actual) my hair following washing. It was frightening. It was easy for me to overdo it on the protein because I never use shampoos and conditioners from the same line, and after discovering I had two brands of conditioner without protein, I checked the ingredients for the matching shampoo online and they did have protein, it dawned on me that the two are actually formulated so that your hair isn't getting too much, to work together. The way my hair was reacting after the deep conditioner which had keratin and wheat protein, was the biggest indicator. My hair was okay up until then, but I see now with one shampoo, my hair was not reacting well. I've found that using a leave in with keratin will provoke (fuse) my hair strands. This wash day (today) I used one conditioner with wheat protein as a co-wash following using bentonite clay to detox, left it on for the 5 minutes recommended (not black girl 5 mins = 30mins😁 ) and ZERO hair strand fusing, ZERO knots, respectable hair shedding given first wash in 3 weeks (lazy) and experimenting with castor oil on my fine hair. My other experiments involved protein-free shampoo (clarifying because of the castor oil) and protein-free conditioner and protein free leave ins/moisturisers between washes, again no hair strand fusing and respectable hair shedding. I'm still investigating to understand my hair protein tolerance levels, type of protein etc but this progress feels wonderful.
