Not only is their obvious physiological benefits to things like running, flipping tires, climbing rope, etc but I feel like the underappreciated benefit is that they and ones like them are primarily done outdoors. People, even athletes, need to be outside more. I'm not a professional athlete but I exercise regularly and garden and feel like there is great psychological benefit with including outside manual labor type work to my routine.

Not a fan of the gi. I respect the tradition and understand it’s necessity in street situations but for MMA purposes I would think no gi would be sufficient by itself. Also takes away the grabbing aspects of gi training and would likely sharpen submissions and setups because you can’t grab the gi.

For sure, but gi is more popular due to no gi being so recent. Finding a no gi place to train isn’t easy for everyone, at that point I’d say it’s better to train gi than not train with a group at all.

Agree. I just started training 6 months ago and I enjoy no gi so much more. Rolling with a gi feels like a push and pull fight whereas training without the gi feels more like wrestling which is much more fun.

BJJ with the Gi is more for actual self defense, in the fact that a Gi replicates clothing that people wear daily.. People with aspirations in MMA should train No Gi for sure though.. it's quite simple.. Though training with a Gi to begin with probably has some benefits.

The gi or "kimono" were common clothing back then in Japan before western influenced. Now it's more of a tradition, but to say that it's unrealistic for the street, I don't think it's a good argument. Same could be said with strictly no gi (your opponent can't grab your clothing and you theirs), that's unrealistic too. So what I think is that you have to compromise, find common ground, which is, someone could grab your clothing and control you, but because you've adapted to gi and no-gi, you'll be able overcome the challenge

I train 10th planet BJJ myself. But following MMA I feel like there is not much evidence that it's more effective in MMA than other schools. I don't see a lot of successfull fighters in MMA that benefit from what's unique about 10th p. Most of the time fighters benefit from how good their Basics are. How well do they improve their position, passing/retaining the guard getting controlling of the back. Breaking and controlling posture to avoid strikes. A great RNC and maybe a handfull of submissions that the fighter is really really good in finishing and getting to. Sure their are some very successful fighters with a 10th p background most notably porbably Tony Ferguson and Kelvin Gastelum. But if you think about the fighters that apply their BJJ best in MMA you do not think of 10th p. Your thinking of Maia, Jacare, Ryan Hall, Ortega etc.

No disrespect to 10th Planet, Eddie is a good coach and Tony Ferguson for example is great off his back but there’s just not a lot of substantial evidence that the rubber guard, the foundation of 10th planet jiujitsu, is really that effective in MMA and especially in BJJ competitions.

A few points. Certain throws and moves basically require Gi experience to learn and apply no Gi. For example, Judo Throws in MMA (Harai Gosh for example) The resistance of a Gi and the Grips, make escaping far harder. Therefore, your escapes need to improve dramatically. It's very much a wrestler mentality to just hold on. IBJJF rules encourage you to fight until you atleast pass half guard and secure side control which is not resting at all. Moreover, the Gi is typically associated with the IBJJF point system. Which has it's flaws, which can definitely be exploited, but ultimately encourages position far more than the submission only perception of things you see in No-Gi. Hence why Eddie Bravo started the whole combat jiu jitsu thing.

Honestly, most of those throws are already replicated inside of Collegiate and Greco-Roman Wrestling. I was banned from using wrestling throws in BJJ, because nobody understood how to counter a grip-less throw until purple belt, and even then it wasn't easy. Hell, even if they do counter it; you can just use the gi grips at the last second to cheat your way to finishing it anyway. Harai-Goshi is basically the clothed version of an arm-drag/shoulder throw.

@@MrNeCr01 I'm no expert on Wrestling, but I do know that it's fairly common for a Judoka to start wrestling and have success with moves considered very 'unorthodox' for wrestlers. Plenty of examples on youtube of that. . . Another point I can add is analogy from Kali/the Filipino Martial Arts. In those arts if you start training with a stick (which is supposed to represent a sword, just safer and cheaper) there are also many empty hand skills, movements, and patterns that you learn as well. So you learn two things at the same time.

Sleeping more at night can give you a competitive advantage - So true! When I was training I was working Mon-Fri. I'd wake up @5:30AM and get home after training @11:30PM. I usually slept 3 - 4 hrs a night ( after making dinner + decompressing [guitar or movie]). The shop closed at 1 or 2 on Fridays - also fight night at the dojo - so if I woke up early enough from my nap, I was able to fight w an irregularly high potential to what I was used to.

training in the gi is very beneficial. and i think people should do it once in awhile, though i get that the majority of our mma specific training is and should be focused on no gi techniques and ideals. i like to play with all of the tools myself. gi you have to really be thinking

Idk. I’d say no gi is more useful for mma , but gi also has some benefits. For Instance, in gi you have to be more aware, since there are more takedowns/submissions that can happen to you. Also from my experience gi is also pretty helpful when it comes to grip strength, since there is much more grip fighting , and it’s harder to get good positioning. No gi is better for mma though since mma fights are no gi. But it would be beneficial for mma fighters to train in the gi at least sometimes though.

I dont know if you answer questions from the comments, but I would like to know your opinion on whether the unified rules of MMA that every promotion has more or less settled on for a long time now, is sufficient for exploring/contesting/showcasing the concept of MMA / all inclusive sport combat? Is there a place and hunger for a version of MMA with no gloves at all? an MMA where supportive aids like knee sleeves and kinesiotape is allowed? an MMA with a longer single round like early UFC? an MMA with radically different scoring targets (which would perhaps work well as an amateur less violent variant) such as scoring pins or a bunch of points for lifting your opponent off the ground or overhead for a number of seconds? It surprises me how little variety there is in MMA , especially at amateur level.

In 20 years of being involved in martial arts and MMA, in my personal opinion, I think the people that train gi have an easier time crossing over to no-gi whereas no-gi people aren’t able to pick up rolling with the gi as easily. In terms of practical self-defense, it gives you a lot of self-defense options since everyone wears clothes and jackets. However, I believe that everyone interested in BJJ and MMA training should train both gi and no-gi.

@@giohill559 Also most of the clothes that people wear is not coarse like a gi to maximize the friction between the hand and gi, and most everyday clothes does not have oversized sleeves and lapels to facilitate griping, and unlike a gi, most clothes is at least somewhat elastic, making it harder for gripping your clothes to control. There are many reasons why the gi does not properly emulate most commonly worn clothes.

it’s simple. if you are training for self defense on the street, train in a Gi. unless you live on a beach, odds are you’re going to get in a fight with clothes on. if i were an mma fighter, i would feel like bjj in a gi is mostly a waste of time. you can learn a lot of fundamentals but obviously the best idea for MMA would be to train no gi at somewhere like 10th planet AND wear MMA gloves everytime you roll. it’s only logical

Never competed in cage fighting, BJJ tournament, wrestling match, kickboxing, boxing or anything so take what I say with a grain of salt. I think strength and conditioning is probably 15-25% in these combat sports depending on the situation and the athlete.

We also don't wear 16 ounce gloves, but we use them when we practice boxing. To me even in a GI it teaches sweeps and submissions that will cross over.

I like your sleep analogy. I would extend it to other arts though. Why always train a watered down(not that No Gi is watered down, it's just not as specific to the art) version of an art just so that it fits within the theme of MMA. Imagine saying it's dumb to train traditional Muay Thai over a Chute Boxe style because the stance isn't applicable to MMA. Or it's nonsense to train pure Boxing as a MMA fighter because there are no kicks. No one talks ish about Sambo or Judo training as you are working on a very specific side of grappling skills. Skills that the athlete understands has limitations within the realm of MMA and therefor must meld into their game. Skills that would not be learned as deeply if done within the context of MMA alone. This is the same for Gi BJJ. Chael's point about the Gi being easy to hold is half correct. Yes it is easier for you to grab and rest, but the factor he didn't consider is empathizing with the other combatant. If its easier for me in the moment, that means its harder for you. If you can escape an armbar or a lapel choke in the Gi, the escape in No Gi is trivial. If you can pass the guard in the Gi... I prefer competing and hard training in No Gi, but I love the art within the Gi(ignoring the IBJJF silliness, good old fashioned Kron Gracie style Gi). One comparison I like to make for my students is to take a world class artist, give them paint(No Gi), and then paint and a brush(Gi). Both paintings will be beautiful but one will surely be more intricate. Love your videos Chael.

That thing about BJJ at a grass root level and only other brown and black belts being allowed to train with brown and black belts... that’s not true. At all. Ever. at least in my BJJ base I have for mma. I got my blue belt and I’ve been training with brown and black belts since I was a white belt. Helps me a lot with control for MMA

If you have access to a no gi gym take advantage. If all the guys do around you is gi, train gi. It’s better than not training with people live, maybe let your instructor know your intentions to translate to mma, and maybe there will be a no gi day at least. On the street though it’s rare to fight a naked guy. Typical clothes are t shirt and jeans if not sweater and sweatpants. So gi in my opinion for street defence isn’t perfect but also isn’t useless.

Agree with the exception of exercise that can work against the kind of musculature you want to fight with. Example: McGregor working out on (gymnasium / playground) rings, trying to do an Iron Cross. That builds the wrong kind of muscles (for McGregor) worse than weights would. And weights would be bad enough but you can move light weights fast. Rings and the like are slow, heavy work - bad for fast-firing muscles. Probably good for ground work, so maybe that's what he's thinking. And maybe I'm goddamn full of shit and McGregor is going to come out fast as ever and with heavier punches to boot.

Gi is necessary. If you use brute strength whilst trapped in an armbar you may escape, but with a gi on you must use technique. The gi provides resistance and grip forcing you to put your strength some what to the side. A Gi is a training tool to master technique. Generally speaking a no gi fighter that trains in a gi is a more precise fighter.

@@pliskin13x Wrestling and mma share a similar approach. Bjj does lack some cohesiveness with mma, but this is partly because bjj is a long game strategy and wrestling is a shorter and more blunt approach. In a fight without rounds, bjj works better the longer the fight goes. Doing 8 minute rounds with wrestlers in bjj, the wrestlers don't last.

@@trendsettertilestone9602 maybe if the gi is involved, but I've never heard someone say wrestlers lack conditioning lol. The average high school wrestler has more mat time and matches than the average bjj guy will get with years of experience. Not to mention bjj tournaments can have like 3 guys in a weight division where you're guaranteed to win a medal even if you lose; in wrestling you can have a 12 man bracket to fight through in order to make it to the finals. Usually a tournament can go for over 2 days straight in wrestling. It's a lot more grueling to become a championship wrestler.

@@pliskin13x I'm not saying wrestlers aren't conditioned. I'll tell you this a bjj black belt match is 10 minutes and in that ten minutes gi or no gi, wrestlers have a more difficult time with open ended matches. Not because of conditioning but because of a lack of patience. Wrestlers I train against use a lot of setups followed by strength and fast follow through. If they don't catch me initially and I brave the storm a couple times, eventually I tap them or time runs out.I have total respect for wrestlers and I feel it's just a different discipline. To be clear, I think that wrestling is better in mma, and in a street fight wrestling is superior thanks to proper takedowns and quickness. Unless the fight goes long. Jiu-jitsu was built for the duration, I have not trained any mma but I do think a wrestling base does lead to a more rounded fighter. Jiu-jitsu guys tend to get bogged down in bjj and don't become a complete fighter.

Athletes have limited time and energy. Makes no sense to use the Gi when it doesn't translate nearly as well as no-gi does for MMA. Gi and no-gi are almost different sports imo. Why waste precious time doing something that is less effective at preparing yourself

The only thing it can offer is friction, which in turn makes you work more technically in escapes. You can’t just slide out of a sweaty armbar in the gi, you have to work for the escape even when tired. Same rule applies for a lot of submissions. It’s not necessary, but I think for someone in the early years of BJJ it can be very helpful.

@@MrCholoPants3415 Yea there are a lot of grips and positions that you can only work towards and hold in gi rolling that you simply can´t in no-gi. Doesn´t make sense to use hours and hours working on a position that you can´t use or you´re very unlikely to be able to use in an MMA fight when you could just do no-gi. Also as a side note, I think training no-gi prepares you a lot better for the pace and physicality of an MMA match since there aren´t too many places to rest when both guys are slippery and there´s nothing to hold on to and one guy is always trying to elbow or puynch the other guy in the head. I´ve seen some guys who are great with a gi on lose to guys who frankly don´t have the best grappling technique when they were going no-gi, purely because they gassed out. They weren´t used to not being able to slow down and breathe so they gassed out when a less technical, more physical dude kept smashing through and putting them under pressure.

@@MrRazmut 100% agree brother. I spend most of my time in the gi.. and when I roll no-gi with guys who spend all their time doing no-gi I feel like a fish out of water. There's a reason why there aren't many guys who become champs simultaneously in gi and no-gi in tournaments, they're vastly different sports. I just see no reason to waste time learning techniques in the gi that are irrelevant in the cage. I'm surprised it's such a contentious topic tbh.. seems like common sense.

training in GI is amazing for MMA and no gi. To me it's analogous to a swimmer training with pants and a jacket on. It would make you strong as fuck to train with that resistance on. Gi is the same, you feel like you're drowning.
