Though Power Rangers has a special place in my heart. They can honestly just, well, not continue... In this Era of streaming and international shows being more widely accessible/accepted; they [Toei] can honestly do what Tsuburaya did with Ultraman in 2019. Start publishing the franchise online with subtitles and hire voice actors for people who don't like subtitles. So many more Ultra fans have been created these last couple years due to this. If Toei just did that, we wouldn't need a western adaptation. In short Western Production isn't bringing that Toku charm and the future is now.

I agree with everyone who say Power Rangers has tokusastu in it's DNA. If you're have to explain what that word is you either go on a lengthy tangent about how there's this genre in Japan and these super hero franchisee done in this certain way etc etc or just say two words: Power Rangers. The #1 example of the genre around the world. Much like Rider has Fuuto P.I. and Ultraman had it's animations (that Netflix movie about Ultraman becoming a kaiju's dad was great!) I can't see why Power Rangers couldn't dip it's toes in the animation department. But they have to be conscious of what it is. Even if they do a 100% original non-sentai season, it's gotta be rooted in tokusatsu

From What I heard, Dino Fury/Cosmic Fury Showrunner Simon Bennett said Power Rangers need to separate from Tokusatsu Genre. When I heard that statement, Power Rangers cannot be alive well without this Genre. Even Godzilla based on Tokusatsu Genre. I have a point of view that's in the middle. Honestly speaking, the Tokunatsu genre is important, but it shouldn't have to be the only thing. There could very-well be an animated series or movie, in the same style that we have had power rangers comics. However, playing around with more original footage and stuff would also be cool as well, so it is not Tokunatsu that needs to change.

My counterpoint is while the Tokusatu was the soul of power rangers, it no longer works for the American audience. Remember who this show is primarily marketed to, kids. Power Rangers does not appeal to kids today. Kids have so many options for entertainment to the point that many don’t watch traditional TV anymore. Tokusatu was fine in the 90’s because it was many people’s first experience with the genre. But American’s entertainment taste constantly changes and evolves.

Tokusatsu, or Super Sentai, to be exact its literally the lifeblood and birth mother of Power Rangers and Western fans should respect that, Power Rangers has never, ever been superior to Super Sentai, no matter how good the shows are. And it's extremely important cause it's the source material. It's just a shame that Power Rangers are too busy reverse engineering it to make it look good I mean sure they stopped using Sentai footage, but that is exactly what's missing of Power Rangers, the footage its crucial, because it's the unique style of Tokusatsu fight scenes that make Power Rangers look good. And don't argue cause it's like Oh PoWer RAngers is FoR AmErICa blablabla they want oRiGiNaLiTY blablabla well guess what? Power Rangers is never original, it never was, and never will. The only thing I respect about Power Rangers, is that they come up with really good original storylines, especially in the Disney- era. But it's the shame that they stopped doing that after RPM which is where it all went downhill, where Power Rangers to these people I think is merely a quick money grab that doesn't need to put much effort into for the fans. What they need now is a really good screenwriter. And a group of people that really loved Power Rangers and willing to put work into it, to really show fans a masterpiece of proof that Super Sentai and Power Rangers is loved and appreciated.

I think what Hasbro should do if they want to keep the franchise going is that they need to balance trying something new and keeping tradition at the same time. Like I don't want see another Go Go Power Rangers being slap into the theme song, making the Rangers teenagers. Their are good Power Rangers seasons where the Rangers are not teenagers. The stuff that I don't want to see go away are the stuff that are the faces of Power Rangers. Like the Main Rangers suits looking identical to each other, the Zords, keeping the Red Ranger a guy.
@erikkt.9847Ай бұрын
I agree with almost everything besides keep the red ranger a guy because so far we seen two female red rangers (samurai and cosmic fury) and both were interesting to see, yes samurai was a technicality that Jaden’s older sister was meant to lead the team but wasn’t complete with her training and was too far away to assemble the team together so Jaden took over and as for Amelia was a good example of a red ranger plus in another series (spd) red ranger was a leader rank in a squad so technically anyone who deserved it can be red ranger so if Z would’ve stayed with the team she could’ve risen from yellow to red eventually

I disagree that Power Rangers need to drop Tokusatsu. I think people who say this forget the entire point of using Sentai footage is because creating new footage is more expensive. They also forget that the show is suppose to be used to advertise the toys. Not the other way around. That was the main reason why Hasbro's Power Rangers has failed. They don't release the toys that the show is advertising. Like Cosmo Fury was literally created and have a ton of stuff that could have been toys that they never released. Toy sales are suppose to make up for the show cost. That's why Toei always emphasis the toy sales on whether or not a show is doing well, not the viewership. As they know if Toys sell, the viewership will grow or at least help break even on production cost. For example, Ohranger(Zeo) had horrible viewership, but the toys saved Sentai from being cancelled, same with Carranger(Turbo). Hasbro, like Disney and Neo-Saban failed to understand this easy concept that Toei already laid out for them. Make a cheap easy to create live action show to sell a ton of toys.

You know, the irony is, as weird as cheesy as the toku stuff might be, it's exactly the kind of thing that could make Power Rangers stand out as a franchise from Marvel or DC. Heck, it is the very thing that's made it stand out for years now, but people wanna chuck it out so they can wholly own it. If you ask me (and I don't wanna start a fight in the comments, but) that was the biggest mistake made with the 2017 movie (along with Saban wanting to be heavy-handed with the tone of the movie causing tonal whiplash). They took the basics of it, smashed it together with a teen coming-of-age movie and bloated budget superhero movie, and popped out something that felt more at home in the MCU than anything that remotely resembled the oddball '90s TV show they were basing it off of. I was fine with the teen movie angle, but they tried to make sense of a TV show were most of the elements in it were slapped together on the fly, and there was no cohesive story well until the second and third seasons. The movie needed that self-aware silliness of the original show, that over-the-top action outside of those last ten minutes of the movie. All those things that were a direct product of Fox and Saban directly adapting a tokusatsu television series. If the franchise is to carry on in any form, it will need to at least *feel like* a work of tokusatsu. The explosions, the martial arts fight scenes, the rubber monsters and spandex tights... that'll be the secret sauce for a revived Power Rangers franchise, that'll be the thing people want out of a reboot. Throw in a script full of tongue-in-cheek jokes about how cheesy and random everything feels, you'll have it made better than any dark, serious reboot.
@Jasper08th28 күн бұрын
What would be a smart idea would be if Hasbro (or whoever) made more than just one medium for power rangers, kind of like the comic running at the same time as the main show did previously. Maybe have multiple different series at a time, or have animated series and live action series to draw multiple audience in. That way the show will still feel fresh and inventive
@rangerreview1780Ай бұрын
What really will prove it. Is the showrunners. If they don't get it. That will be the failure. Because not adapting the footage. Isn't really the issue. They'll have 100% control over everything. But that means they have to make everything. Double edge sword. PR has to always follow Toku. Since that's what makes PR, PR. If they don't. The show will just be another superhero show copying Iron Man. You want to make the Megazord fights all CGI, fine. Rescue Force and Fire did that. Use more stylized CGI, fine. But those things don't make a good story. That is what's needed the most.

While I really wish more seasons using the Sentai footage, Specifically Lupat and King Ohger, had come to pass for Power Rangers. I am fine with them moving forward with their own unique style for the 'Reboot' if it ever happens. But I think keeping the style of Tokusatsu would be a smart move for the new PR. Making their own practical suits, their own designs for Zords, if they use Zords in the new PR. There's a lot they could do, as shown by the Comics. They just have to be brave enough to actually show some creative initiative. I still believe that if they put a lot of love and passion into Power Rangers it can be a worthwhile investment. It could reach both old and new audiences. But they've got to be willing to put the effort in...and I'm honestly not sure Hasbro has the love for PR to put that effort in. Which worries the hell out of me.

With King Ohger being a thing, a middle ground option would definitely be the best direction. That said PR needs Toku, much like how Thunderbirds needs Supermarionation or Muppets needing, Muppets. Other wise you might as well watch a generic sci fi superhero show made by someone else. Anyway as long as PR keeps its identity as to what made it special, change is welcome. Those three movies were all really interesting in their own way. The first one was exciting as a kid, the 2017 movie was adorable as an adult, and the Turbo movie also exists. So here's the thing aboot Power Rangers specifically; IF they do a live action series that's all original footage, it would still be: 1. Adherent to everything that made Power Rangers successful - so, it's ultimately a Sentai fanfic same as literally every other season. 2. Objectively tokusatsu. Now, just in case there's any weirdo cringey weebs out there, a couple clarifications: "tokusatsu" just means "special effects," that's it. Japan isn't the only one capable of producing a show using practical effects, nor are they the only country allowed to use them for shows aboot super heroes, monsters, and robots. Also... like... Power Rangers isn't it's own thing, it's just the name used to market Super Sentai outside of Japan. Like... you keep framing it as if "using the footage" is the legacy of Super Sentai, but, no, Power Rangers - the five teenagers with attitude included - is a branch of the Super Sentai franchise, not the other way aroond. It is Toei's footage, it is Toei's production, their legally owned IP, their hired artists, their property. "Power Rangers" is not a independent brand and it never can be. I can't stress this enough, there exists no possible reinterpretation of Power Rangers as it was brought to the US - white kids and all - which is also not inherently a reinterpretation of the Super Sentai brand and concept. That's just science. Let's look at an example: Ultraman: Towards the Future. This is the first Ultraman series produced since Ultraman 80, and it wasn't produced in Japan, but rather Australia. Japanese writers and artists were involved in the preproduction phase - most notably iconic monster designer Minoru Yoshida and Yog-Sothothery and Digimon Tamers author Chiaki Konaka - but the production was handled in Australia by Australian actors and crew. And the end result is one of the best Ultraman shows of all time, it's certainly my favorite, and the one I grew up with, and if you tried to described that as "not tokusatsu" you'd just be plain delusional, let alone if you tried to describe the show as "not Ultraman." Of course there have been miserable failures as well. The Monsterverse is completely antithetical to everything Godzilla is, to the point where they actively refuse to even give him the roar, y'know, the single most iconic monster roar in all of history, and of course there's also the story of what happened when Tsuburaya tried to follow up Towards the Future with a US-produced Ultraman show and... that one didn't go so well. So it's easy to understand resistance to the idea based on that sort of thing. I don't personally think that's going to happen, though. The thing is, Godzilla movies got dubbed, had story beats changed, and were edited. Ultraman just got dubbed, sometimes throwing in some parody. But Power Rangers? Setting aside Dynaman, Power Rangers has always been like this, a mix of original and existing footage using a new recontextualized version of the story from the original show. It's in a unique position no Japanese import has ever been in before. Every other example you could think of - Voltron didn't have anyone on staff who knew Japanese so they had to improv the scripts, Battletech mixing footage from multiple shows together, etc. - is either not quite the same thing in practice or just pales in comparison to the extreme length of time that Power Rangers has not only been using this method, but SUCEEDING with it. Which means that, as I've already said, anything original Power Rangers as a brand produces is just going to be a Super Sentai fanfic, same as literally every other season. I just don't believe you can take the toku out of Power Rangers and actually expect the show to no longer be tokusatsu just because the special effects footage wasn't produced in Japan. I could be wrong! Maybe it'll be miserable and suck and pull a Monsterverse and do whatever the Sentai equivalent of "nukes are good actually" is, but like I just don't think that's a reasonable or plausible fear. No, Power Rangers is not going to be a 45 minute prestige TV drama on HBO max featuring all CGI effects that are on par with a Hollywood film. Why is that a thing anyone should ever have to say? The worst possible outcome is Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters, not grimdark CW series. This is a children's show. ...also dude I hate to be the one to tell you this but it's currently the year 2024 and people don't watch TV anymore. Those declining numbers you're putting up on screen don't mean shit because you're not putting them in the proper context. I get that corporations are stupid and make stupid decisions because they don't understand the market is changing, like I've only seen that happen a million times, I lived through all of the past 20 years I know first hand, but that does not mean YOU need to also buy into that bullshit narrative. The Japanese episodes have been going nonstop this whole time and that has a very low percentage of viewers compared to all the places the US versions are exported to. This is a false crisis, Hasbro has more money than god and can do whatever the fuck it wants, they are not struggling to get by. They, and Power Rangers, will be fine.

Even if they were to drop Sentai, wouldn’t power rangers still be a Toku in any sense as long as they’re humans turning into colorful heroes and fighting villains?
@Lithosagymfan173Ай бұрын
Even a show like Dr Who is considering Tokusatsu, since that word is just practical/special effects in Japanese.

The franchise is still on life support. Try watching the GARO franchise instead.

So since you brought up Powers Rangers comics and if Tokutasu is important to power rangers. Have you heard of Radiant Black and the Massive-Verse? Because it is original ip created by Kyle Higgins it deeply inspired by Power Rangers and Tokutasu genre. Even other Massive Verse titles such as Rogue Sun, Inferno Girl Red, and Dead Lucky. They are inspired by Power Rangers-Tokutasu. There even a Radiant Black Helmet made by Starchild props who make Power rangers helmets. Did you think if Radiant Black would be live action as THEE AmeriToku? Or you think it would cost too much American money to pull it off? What is budget of Amazon’s The Boys? There already a Radiant Black animated short Radiant Black vs Blaze. Will Friedle Voiced Radiant Black. Including the upcoming Radiant Black audio book. And No/One is getting a Live Action movie. No/One is part of Massive-verse but it is not Tokutasu. It more Crime Drama and Batman inspired No/One and The C.O.W.L are the only two Massive-Verse title that are not inspire by Tokutasu. There is a C.O.W.L short film. It more a Golden age Superhero noir story. 0:18 Honestly that is other way around. Godzilla was inspired by The Beast from 20,000 Fanthoms.

God damn! There is actually a Power rangers fans who’s admiting that Power rangers flopped👏👏 They need to find an identity that’s not inspired or taken from Super Sentai, that’s why they struggling to survive now cause for 30year and not until 2023 with Cosmic fury when they wanted to be more original, but still uses Ryusoulger, Kyuranger robots and Sentai monsters…. that’s not original And the most important Super Sentai is not what holding Power rangers back, but actually themself and without Super Sentai and Toei then Power rangers wouldn’t have existed this long

(English ain't my language sorry) Without the Tokusatsu element PR aren't gonna work. What is needed is a branch with Japanesse and American working together to either mix the two version better OR to have Japanesse create original tokusatsu and character developement for the American show. If the tokusatsu element is off the PR show it's gonna loose it's charm of what's make PR well PR. If it's an all American show it's gonna be just another action show (good 1st season and if not cancel, it's gonna be a downfall and a boring show), usual overuse of drama, story inconsistency and characters growth being trapped in a endless cycle. Sorry, really, but America is more known for their ideas of a story and their inconsistency only money and mindless view will matter, social media war will fuel the show and not the show itself (look at the action shows, the majority is like that and the rare ones being good or canceled or nose dive bc it's a money mindless show bc social media war became the audience and the story doesn't matter).

I dont think Power Rangers needs to keep adapting Sentai, but it needs to keep some things from it to heart. The style Sentai, and by extension Power Rangers, has with filming lend to its identity and could help it stand out with the superhero genre being as it is, with Marvel and DC fatigue, and people not responding to the 2017 movie. If they have good writing, storytelling, and designs, they could make something great. I like how you brought up KingOhger because it's a great example at this. Another thing they should take into heart is the designs. Sentai's designs pop out their motif more in a way that's distinctly Sentai. If they want to make their own designs, they have to see what made the Sentai designs work. Otherwise, it'll seem like they did the bare minimum to make something that could vaguely be considered Power Rangers.

I thought I'd side with yes but is in the middle. RPM is already a thing, why not stick to that kind of storytelling?
