Normally when we transition from autumn into winter we should cut our lawns one last time. Most people cut the lawn a little bit shorter than normal but in some cases and situations it's ok to leave them longer for winter. In this video we go into the reasons why you might cut your grass short or leave it long.
► You can learn more detailed information on grass types and regions and what height to cut them at on the following page: turfmechanic.c...
Here are some vids on the channel that are related and support some of what I am doing right now:

► The blower I was using in the video is the big 100-volt SunJoe; it's not as strong as some of the other high voltage units but it's generally a lot cheaper than them and still stronger than most lower voltage battery blowers so I still think it's a great option. I vary the height of my mower, as necessary. Typically during the late spring, and summer i keep it at the mid-height of the mower. My first cutting and last cutting are one notch below this, to clean the grass. During the summer, if we're experiencing hot weather and little rain, I raise it one notch. This keeps my lawn from drying out too much.

Upstate New York. Last cut I’m doing today. What height do you recommend to leave it last cut for winter

I always drop the blade for the last few cuts but not going so severe this season, want to see if it winters better with some more on top of the crown. Not that its been a problem but I want to see if there is any noticeable difference next spring.

I wish I could stay warm, I filmed a video this morning in mostly sub 30-degree weather on dormant seeding. Today I'm sending the kids out to play because it's nice this afternoon at 42! LOL Hope you have a good set of holidays despite the obvious stuff going on in the world these days. Take care Vazz.

How late can you mow? Can you still mow if it’s getting below freezing at night often?

I mow mine at the lowest setting, one inch, and bag. This picks up most of the debris. I ended up borrowing my son's Toro 60 volt twenty two inch mower because it has better suction than my Green works 82 volt twenty five inch mower.

I agree with you on the suction, that mower does have great suction for a battery mower, I've been bagging with my 19" snapper and my 22" Toro this season, I can't get to the lowest setting though because my lawn just isn't flat enough for it; whenever I try I get scalping issues so I'm on notch two at least until the wife OKs a truckload of sand to be dumped on the driveway. :D

What are you getting for run time on your Toro compared to the Green works. Thx.

I was neglectful last fall and left the grass uncut. It was weighed down and flattened by snow. It's 6-12" long. How do I cut it off now?

If you have an electric dethatcher or power rake like a greenworks or sunjoe run it on the highest setting...if you don't then just lightly fluff your grass up with a regular garden rake. Then run your mower over very slowly so suction can pick grass up for the cut. Don't worry about cutting too much off at once, breaking 1/3 rule ocassionally is fine. You may have to do a series of fluffing jobs and cutting jobs in a single weekend...and make sure to bag clippings. It's way too early in the season to mulch that much back into the lawn while microbial activity is still sluggish. Good luck, lawn will look awesome in no time!
