"Just because it's called an American company, doesn't mean it's going to be functioning in the public interest" - I joined Joy Reid on @MSNBC to talk about why Congress is trying to ban TikTok.

This TikTok ban is really an auction for billionaires to buy the app.

I was never a fan of, or signed up with, Facebook and sharing my information to millions of the collective humans when it first arrived on the planet was not my idea of friendship. Now that Z-berg is a $$$$ I do not trust him anymore than I trust another billionaire to use me as a target for marketing. I never signed into TikTok either. I think these companies should be regulated, much like the internet, for safety issues.

Whether the sale goes through or not, don't use TikTok. Don't even use KZbin without a strong ad blocker. If government won't hold these companies accountable, the people have to. My adblocker goes down when Google's ad policy includes strong consumer protections.
@tschorsch2 ай бұрын
Since Google owns KZbin and is its own ad company, an ad blocker only eliminates the ads. Without an ad blocker, if you never clicked on an ad, you're sharing the same information as with an ad blocker.

Big data also means big data CENTERS which use a lot of ENERGY. These big tech companies are spending billions creating new massive data centers at a rate faster than energy companies can meet the increasing demand, meaning energy costs are going up for everyone, including we the people. They are also using more natural gas to offset the energy deficit, which, despite claims to the contrary, is not that much “cleaner” than coal because of how leaky natural gas production facilities are. They leak methane, which is more potent than CO2. Also these data centers must be on 24/7. Renewable energy sources like wind and solar have difficulty producing consistent output that this use case would demand.
@sunshinewalker60742 ай бұрын
It should not be sold or banned. Anything China wants to know about you it can buy. Data is out there and is bought and sold. Now banning on military people makes sense though. For reasons too complicated to explain here.

We are in another Gilded Age with Robber Baron's (Billionaires) and monopolistic companies/corporations. But they now have so much control & influence over Congress that it will be next to impossible to push regulation on them and also to use anti-trust laws to break them up. And don't give me the Socialism or Marxism line, this is how you keep the U.S. economic ecosystem healthy by keeping things from getting too far to one side. Ecosystems need to be in a state of equilibrium or near equilibrium to be healthy and productive. That is basic economics and capitalism folks.

Bob, the data control/privacy part of the issue is a red herring. The real issue being addressed is the possibility of a foreign govt being able to control and *influence the algorithm* used. There is a reason Uighur videos are supressed on TikTok (this has been studied). We know the CCP already has influence to TikTok. Now apply that same soft power to a foreign govt -like China - that might decide it prefers Trump over Biden as the next POTUS. It doesn’t take a leap of imagination to see how this kind of soft power over a powerful widely used social media tool could easily be leveraged to shape and influence our domestic politics. After the Russian influence via social media in the previous elections it should be obvious to anyone paying attention that this problem can get significantly worse, and quickly.
