Here's the thing. I don't agree a UX designer have to know how to code. AS the UX designer in a team , you should never write code - if you are nearly as good as the coders of your team - then there's something wrong with your team. However, having some basic knowledge of programming, how code and coders work is a FANTASTIC tool for a UX designer. You will have a better understanding of what's possible to do and what the logic could potentially look like. Your communication with programmers will be much better and that will open up some doors and make your team tighter, and that's invaluable. But in no way do I agree that UX designers should be able to code. Understanding basic code and how it works is NOT the same as "being able to code". The statement "UX designers should be able to code" frightens great people away from the UX field. Worst of all is job ads where they are looking for a UX designer and they have to be programmers as well. That's just bs from companies who aren't willing (or able) to pay for both a programmer and a designer if you ask me.

Go ahead! There's a ton of job postings for UX designers where they want you to know code. But for me that's just a sign that they don't really know what they are looking for. They don't really understand the role of a good UX guy. Focus on being a good designer, being on top of standards, good practice and effective ways how to research users, mapping user journeys and applying various UX methodologies. You'll be fine without coding knowledge. Reading up on basics is a good thing, but don't fool yourself thinking you have to apply actual code yourself. :)

I actually agree with this video. That being said, I do respectfully see your point of view. A lot of the job postings for UI/UX designers have a ton job requirements that require designers to know how to code Html, css, Javascript and how to use frameworks like REACT, ANGULAR AND Bootstrap. Which basically makes me question what companies really want. It's as if they want a full-stack developer or designer who has the entire UX/UX and front-end development spectrum covered all-in-one shot. I wonder if these job postings are just written by their HR department who have no clue what they are talking about. Haha 😂

@@LightsaberPanda They're looking for a unicorn who can do it all. But if you're okay-ish everything, you won't be really good at one thing

UX designers should empathize with users and not with engineers, meaning user experience comes first, implementation should be thought of later on. That way the solution is not limited by UX designer thinking what's easy and what's not easy to implement. But if something is hard to implement, then it's a matter of cost Vs benefit.

So should engineers know how to design?

Yes. Engineering and Design go hand and hand. In software, design is not known as 'aesthetic' design but it's 'functional design' and that is design pattern for coding. Civil Engineering deals with design all the time for infrastructure to make concepts more pragmatic taking in consideration of physics and gravity.
