Feb 18, italy: solo ride, came off bike - hospital time until 28-feb, before C19 really kicked in, was not pleasant. Doctors and nurses, as fantastic as they were, were busy preparing for the onslaught they knew was coming. I can't see my next appointments being kept, i'm now really not-emergency: heck, i can't even go out without paperwork, but there's no way i'd want to turn up now at A+E/ ER/ PS with an avoidable injury.

Here in Italy where I'm living under lock down, cycling is permitted for exercise but most sites and even GCN Italy have said it would be irresponsible to go out because as you point out, beds are required for dealing with the virus and there is always a risk of an accident with cycling. I still go out running, and have ordered a smart trainer. They are hard to come by at the moment. Most sites are sold out.

Cycling 4-5 times a week ( alone) is what keeps me sane right now. Don’t want to watch my retirement investments go down the drain😢. Lol. Besides, keeping in shape will help me fight off this crap, if I get it. I’m 66 and supposedly in that category of people who are gonna die if we get it...yeah right! I’m gonna fight on, and bike on! 🚴‍♂️. Omg...after sending this I keep getting messages from those poor souls that have given up, or don’t know what it is to fight something...seen or unseen, to the end. If some of you have given up..I’m sorry. For you that have raced, or served in the military...fight on until the end. For those of you that are on your couch..please disregard my comments. I will ride on..I do understand that 85% of the people who get this virus are asymptomatic...never know they had it, but pass it on to others that have problems or worse. If you’ve given up...don’t. The great majority of us will survive. It will end...we will see bike races again. It is NOT the end. Wow. 😊

@James B. "keeping in shape will help me fight off this crap" Mate, italy's first case was a 38 year old marathon runner and soccer player who ended up with pneumonia and on a ventilator so he wouldn't die. This virus does not care what shape you're in, you utter ponce.
@jamesb.2064
@jamesb.2064 4 жыл бұрын
OrangeCrusader Dear "utter ponce". Actually science has already shown that being in shape does help the immune system. Different people get different viral loads of any virus. I prefer to fight...sounds like you’ve given up. Military retired here..I was taught not to ever give up. Good luck couch sitting mate
@OrangeCrusader
@OrangeCrusader 4 жыл бұрын
@@jamesb.2064 It's a virus you stubborn fool, not a fistfight. It does not care if you keep a stiff lip. This virus is not the flu/regular viral infection, it is MUCH worse. It does not care if you feel 'tough' about it, your 'fight' is against an enemy you cannot see, touch or hit. People much younger than you in much better shape are dying and having their lungs permanently damaged by this in countries MUCH better prepared than yours is. Good luck.
@jamesb.2064
@jamesb.2064 4 жыл бұрын
OrangeCrusader Oh my god. In this country, we call people like you liberals or socialist. "Please come rescue me..I don’t know what to do". Lol. If that is your fate...so be it. But at least fight...do whatever you can instead of asking the government to come rescue you. My god man, you can fight against any enemy. You’re right, I can’t see or touch it, but I can do the best I can to make myself one hell of a target against it. I refuse to die without a fight. And,as we know, 85% of the" victims" never knew they had this virus....they were "asymptomatic"....I’ll translate..they never knew they had it...but gave it to others. Wise up!

Episode Idea: Story time with GCN. Tell us the epic stories from our sport's history! The monuments, grand tours, etc. That guy who broke his fork and then welded it back together himself but then was late disqualified! Congrats on the 2M GCN. If you need to create videos during the pandemic then may I suggest that you could recount some of the funny stories from your careers or your time on GCN. During the winter, I ride with a long sleeved base layer, sometimes a thermal long sleeved base layer while indoors on the trainer (using TrainerRoad). I leave the window open (outdoors 5º-15º C) and turn on the fan. As soon as I finish my ride, I put on a sweatshirt so I don't get chilled. To be fair, though, when riding outdoors in the winter, I need heated gloves so my fingers don't turn deathly white.

Video idea: looking at some ethical / eco friendly brands in the world of cycling. It would be great to know which bike manufacturers, accessories and cycle wear is good for the planet.

Would like to see something highlighting cyclists haircuts. Photo submissions, contest for most lift, etc.

Idea for video - Cycling Collectibles, so mostly about people collecting team water-bottles and having hundreds of them. They are able to tell you what year given water-bottle is coming from or in some cases even from what race. And they know all pro-cycling teams in last 20 years in all divisions and countries (and their bottles)! ;) My brother is like that - pretty impressive (even if maybe useless) knowledge, but I think interesting topic itself. How they follow all races they can - not only watching them but following peloton to gather all bottles they can find on the side of the road. Then exchanging extra copies with people from around the world and things like that. Plus obviously other collectibles like team kits and so on. But I think water-bottles are most common.

I agree with the information in this video regarding group rides. I think cyclist should consider riding solo for the foreseeable future. Much safer until a vaccine comes out for the COVID-19. I was on a solo ride this morning here in Texas when I saw a group slowly approaching from behind. I slowed so they could pass and get away from me. They were back slapping each other completely oblivious to the possible health ramifications. I was concerned about them slinging sweat or something on me as they passed. It also irritated me because I felt they passed a little too close to my left. I am older cyclist and this virus could easily take me out. Great GCN video.

Dear Si and Dan, I always appreciate a bit of good old fashioned British banter, but full marks for making life feel fun in the face of what we're all up against.👍👍and why not, a kiss too 😘

Video idea you can do from your room: Some lengthy "Train with GCN" Videos. We're all stuck inside anyways. Some extra distance focused training videos would be nice!

And a thank you to Si on the 1x vs 2x topic. (My road/endurance/gravel bike is an Orbea Terra... have 2 sets of wheels for road and gravel. I struggled for months on the 1x vs 2x decision, and it was Si’s comment about running different cassettes that tipped me in the 1x choice. My chainring is 46 teeth, and road wheels run 11-34 so I get the closer gearing, and my gravel wheels are 11-42. Since I live in Chicago (possibly the flattest place I’m earth), I don’t need two chainrings for riding in the Midwest U.S.... so thank you for that tip! Both my XC MTB and my road/gravel bikes are 1x, and I’m not going back. :)

Video idea: how to organise a race. We are a club of a dozen active cyclists and another one or two dozen of less active members, and would like to give back to the local community by making an event. What's the easiest, cheapest way to make a race happen? I seem to remember from one of Ollie's pre-GCN videos that weekday evening time trials are a thing in the UK and consist essentially of two people with fold-up desks, protocol sheets and stopwatches. Perhaps a video on those? Obviously, nothing of the sort is likely to happen until the pandemic is over.

Video idea! I'd love to see more comparisons between newer and older bike tech. Being pretty new to cycling, I have trouble translating some of the concepts to my older bike. And many of us have older, budget bikes. Probably more of a gcn-tech idea. Thx guys! Love every episode!!

A nice indoor challenge: Mark from GTN agains anyone from GCN running the Col de Zwift (Alpe d'Huez) - see who finishes first (as the run eliminates the incline).... (obviously the start at the beginning of the climb)
