I don't quite understand this video. It talks about how the Ancient Greeks and Romans really enjoyed bugs. The Greek civilization began ~800 BC and the Romans came after them. However, this video then goes on to talk about how humans lost their taste for bugs in 10,000 BC, when the agricultural revolution just began. These two statements were very contradictory.

I tried roasted grasshoppers my friend brought from Uganda. They were absolutely delicious! Crunchy and salty, tasted a lot like chips. But unlike chips, they contain tons of proteins and very little fat and carbs. Perfect for a gym buff like myself. I wish bug eating would be more widespread, I'd happily chow down on roasted grasshoppers any day.

farmed insects that are properly cooked are just as likely to spread pathogens as any other meat. In short - it's a statistical anomaly. Eating raw bugs is a very bad idea though.

The only time I ate a bug was when I was younger. It was a Filipino restaurant that specialises in native cuisine(native from the Philippines). It was cricket adobo. It tasted pretty good but one just had to get over the appearance and the thought that it's a, bug. Now, I don't even know if I'm courageous enough to eat insects XD

Considering the fact that plants are sometimes lacking in a few nutrients such as vitamin D and b12, coupled with the fact that insects are consumed around the world and the only thing that is stopping us from consuming them are cultural hangups, i don't see how this argues for veganism, and I say this as a vegan.
@Longboard9149 жыл бұрын
+Kæla Brown In order to have a plant - based diet we need to rely on staple crops that are farmed on adulterated land... land that has been cut down to grow crops, with its previous ecosystem destroyed (which was intact for millions of years before we cut it down) . So to be a vegan you are still supporting invasive agriculture, unless you get all your veg and fruit from a Food Forest or forage out in the wild. The truth is there is no black or white answer, and as annoying as that sounds, all it means is we have to expand our food supply to include more insects, mollusks, and other nutrient dense life forms that reproduce more quickly than plants or mammals

My biggest complain with eating bugs is that almost every source you can find in the US is expensive or sold in very small portions as a novelty. Not really feasible to become a primary source of protein in its current state.

Winterbeere48 Not really. Neither one of the examples is a waste product of the animal. Honey is basically evaporated nectar which is vomited by the bee for a food source. Milk is also a food source for calves. But eating a bug whole does involve eating all of the insides and waste as well. Not really a problem but contributes to the "ick factor".
@tykill11 жыл бұрын
Who gives a shit? (no pun intended)
@SAsgarters11 жыл бұрын
How is that a problem?
@thestrangejames11 жыл бұрын
tykill You should. Changen Pan didn't quite nail it with her criticism, but it's along the right path: The problem with eating insects is that they often come coupled with parasites, like tape worms. House flies can carry tape worms, ticks carry babesiosis, plague from fleas, leishmaniasis comes from sandflies, hymenolepiasis from meal worms & flour bugs & cockroaches, liver flukes from ants & snails, schistosomiasis of many kinds from snails. Properly preparing insects is very, very important. You can become very sick very quickly if you just pick stuff off the petunias and have at them. Part of this is that you are eating the entire animal; generally speaking the muscles of an animal aren't the organs that contain (too many) parasites, the digestive organs are. This isn't an argument saying "let's never eat intestines of any sort," far from it. I love sausages and kidneys, but they need to be cooked properly -- and in a country that barely understands how to cook pork chops, I'm wary about people introducing insects. That being said, you're rather unlikely to get a parasite from a deep-fried meal, and that is similar to the traditional way of preparing many insects.
@daylyskater8 жыл бұрын
I'd love to take part in this "paradigm shift", but I simply can't overcome the disgust I have learned and that is stuck so deeply in my mind. I guess I could never deliberately enjoy a fried insect. (can't eat lobsters too)
@shastabare60262 жыл бұрын
You could try something like "Chirps" an American brand of cornships with ground up cricket flour for taste and nutritional boost. Also, just watching more videos like this will help you grow familiar with the concept and the sight of cooked insects - a psychological study showed that information and familiarity made people more likely to try insects prepared as food. Good luck.

It's pretty fair to compare eating bugs to eating lobster, ship, crabs, and other shellfish. They're both arthropods but eating lobster is probably less healthy because they're bottom-feeders that eat carrion. Insects that don't eat dead and decaying flesh are most likely the most healthy to eat because they carry less bacteria. Have I ever eaten insects in my 32 years of living? No, but since I have no qualms with eating crab, calamari, and shrimp, I'm willing to give fried grasshoppers a go if they're prepared just right.
