The salmon farming industry needs a massive overhaul. Open net farming is impacting the eco-system by spreading disease in to the wild fish population. Wild salmon populations are plummeting near farms, whales no longer have food and on the West coast of Canada bears are starving because of very weak salmon runs. Sea Lice and many of fish disease spread from the farms. Fish farms never ever shovel their manure. It just piles up on the ocean floor. The fish are forced to swim in this filth. Fish pellets are treated with pesticides to preserve the high fat content of the food. No matter how high quality the pellets, they are treated with toxic chemicals as a preservative. Salmon farms must go to a closed containment system to even be considered "sustainable". And that will shrink production and raise the price. But our environment won't suffer. Regulations barely exist. Most countries protect the salmon industry before the citizens. In Canada the gov't pays full retail value to the farm when fish are lost due to disease. They don't need insurance because the gov't bails them out at the tax payers expense. I can go on and on about misleading marketing and industry paid for science stats too. A good substitute is Arctic Char which is raised in a closed containment farm. I have many video on my channel that talk about the impacts of salmon farms. I just interviewed BC Marine Biologist Alexandra Morton on my youtube channel. She has watched her eco-system fall apart after salmon farms where introduced.

what do you think about aquaponics fish. Of course most of the market value goes to selling the plants grown from the fish's waste and not the fish but the fish grown in it look really healthy. And its easier to monitor the Ca Mg S N and other elements in the water and fish's food simply because its a closed system that can be easily tested if the practitioner is serious enough.

Yes Marcus, you have the facts right there. Locally we got the same problem where the wild population get infected and now is in decline. In some rovers disappearing entirely. And our food administration have issued a warning against eating the farmed salmon too often for the very same reason you pointed out - the pellets got high levels of preservatives and even one anti-explosive compound (yes true! The dust from pellets can actually ignite.) Now it's winter I don't do any fishing, so I asked in the local supermarket for wild salmon. The reply? 'No we cannot sell that since such fish have no veterinarian licence.' Wild fish don't need any, but the fish farms have cornered the market this way. That's how far the drain things have gone!

If it isn't specified where it was caught (for example artic which is the only clean place left+have a certification) then you can count on that it was cought in the dirty waters outside china or india where they empty all there trash with chemicals and have had several oil leaks. Our oceans are actually more polluted than the air. If you think you're healthy eating wild from out polluted oceans then you're dead wrong.

DNews I'm surprised you guys did not talk about the environmental impact of fish farming. Fish farming location falls under two categories: isolated tanks or at sea. The ones farm at sea uses mesh network to allow the waste to disperse from the farm. Unfortunately this alters the eco-system of the natural habitat. During my undergraduate degree in Immunology and Infections we talked a lot about the alteration of pathological flora in the ecosystem with fish farming.

Trace, I appreciate that at 0:35 you said fish farming in and of itself isn't bad, but the execution can sometimes be pretty terrible. I have no theoretical problem with fish farming; I think if we're going to keep fishing pressures as high as they are then fish farming needs to be incorporated into a sustainability plan. But that doesn't mean we should approve and forget. Sometime the fish farming practices are *WAY* worse than even wild fishing (look into shrimp farming, if you're interested). We need to continually look to improving fish farming practices so they don't go the way of factory meat farms.

***** I personally agree. I personally choose to be vegetarian. But not everyone holds those beliefs, and so the question then becomes one of sustainability. Most of the world's fisheries are overfished or have completely collapsed. So how are we to alleviate fishing pressure so we can both protect the ecosystem these fish are part of and meet the overwhelming demand of humans? Because if we do not farm fish then people will simply continue to exploit the ocean until it is completely depleted, and that is not an acceptable alternative.

I'd much rather people get over the fact eating fish is wrong and just stop purchasing it. Also, as a vegan myself, I implore you to adopt the same lifestyle. I'm not sure what kind of vegetarian you are, but drinking milk and eating eggs is no different from eating meat.

The only concern i have is that some companies are deceptive about important things such as feed, cage free and all that good stuff and they still mark high prices. Im now dedicating a lot of my time to learning what i need to look out for and some dirty tricks the food industry can play on people for the sake of making extra cash.

Happy to see the subject of aquaculture being brought up on your channel. Stirring peoples curiosity to go out and research the subject! Fantastic! Increased awareness on where our seafood originates from and how it's produced (wild caught or aquaculture) are important questions consumers should strive for. Apart from monetary goals, what do the producers consider when catching/producing? Do they have clear and transparent sustainable goals? What demands do you put on them by choosing NOT to buy their products (yes, that means no tasty shrimp/prawns, salmon, or other delicious food this evening)? Or perhaps buying from those that show good practises. All activity will always have an impact. However, it isn't a question of whether or not to have aquaculture (or insert any other food production type in the sentence), but how we approach all the complex issues arising from doing so. How do we find a balance between monetary, environmental, dietary, and many other goals? As for many of the ignorant comments below (and surely more to come), I suggest researching online and looking for information from RELIABLE SOURCES, such as scientific journals, government sites, and other peer reviewed information. And even those must be read critically with researchers/publishers goals in mind. If people (layman or professional in any field) have an opinion they should have evidence to back up any claims, and be ready to revise said opinions based on new evidence!

The problem is soy bean oil and other oils high in Omega-6 fatty acids are being fed to certain farmed fish. Also, certain farmed fish such as salmon tend to be high in toxins. Farmed-raised rainbow trout are a good source of long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids, and are low in toxins; especially if the fish are raised in an aquaponic environment. Before avoiding fish out of fear for toxin exposure, I would eliminate dairy first, which is even higher in toxins. You can always take an algal based Omega-3 supplement if you don't want to kill fish, but research suggest eating whole fish has more benefits (shocking). See a well-informed doctor or dietitian for dietary help. Peace.

You don't use soy bean oil in fishfeed. It's never been used in fishfeed. You use rapeseed, linseed, or Carmelina oil. And both linseed and camelina oil is high in O3 oils. Farmed fish has a much lower level of toxins than wild fish.

Finally you omit to recognize that we use today huge hatcheries to promote the growth of Pacific salmon in the wild. We even sometimes vaccinate the young before they go down the river into the sea. We are using the ocean as a vast fish farm!!! with no studies. Could you study this effect too? Wild versus farmed is way more complex than what you make of it.

There was a documentary on France TV on the 9th Dec, 2014. It was about the Farm bred Salmon in Norway being treated with a banned chemical to get rid of fish lice. Now, it may be a quick method, but it is also banned. There are numerous ways to get rid of this lice. It's just labour intensive. I want chemical free fish - that is why i am choosing Aquaponic bred fish as a way of getting my protein and Omega acids. I'm in the process of setting up my own system to feed myself and my family, then eventually supplying to local markets. Sometimes a smaller system is easier to control and maintain.

As a person who is deeply concerned about the environment, I think fish farming has one major hurdle to overcome: waste disposal, I mean fish shit....A LOT! And that shit has a lot of nitrogen and other contaminates that are harmful if not properly disposed of! So if we cannot find a way to safely dispose of the waste or find some kind of use for the waste then fish farming could prove to be a dead end!

Good intention, really weak information delivery. Starts out saying some methods of fish farming are "terrible" (they are) but no mention of the main reasons for this (disease transference, sea lice proliferation, excessive antibiotic and chemical application). Even the fact that despite colorant additives, farmed salmon still literally pales in comparison - is skimmed over. "Less pink" is a huge understatement. And then there's the wide fat bars in farmed (PCB accumulator)...

I don't think I can objectively judge an entire industry based off of one study done to one product as an experiment that does not reflect the common practice of the rest of the industry for the same said product. However, I do think that studies - such as the one done in Norway - are important for determining what works and what doesn't when looking for new methods by which we can improve the industry while lessening our negative impacts on the environment and the product produced.

I found fish that came from farms to be a bit on the fatty side. That's my only complaint. Couldn't care less how much omega they contain. Just cut down on the fat, you can barely eat it...

I'm actually pro industrial farming, if it's done right, it could definitely lead to both healthier wild cultures, not threatened with extinction, and healthier food. The problem is that we currently take wayy too many shortcuts in raising our animals and we need to step back and aim for quality first, then quantity.

I believe fish farming takes place in Norway, Scotland, British Colombia, Alaska and South America, but most fish farms use Atlantic salmon and this can be a problem. I have heard stories of Atlantic salmon escaping from their farms and breeding in the Pacific Ocean, but unsure if these stories are true? Also, Its been discussed many time that salmon fish farms have inadvertently increased the amount of parasites that ultimately infect wild salmon and wild salmon numbers have declined in some places like British Colombia and Scotland. However, I think wild salmon in the UK is starting to make a comeback and maybe fish farming practices have improved?

Once the farming techniques are equal or close enough to nature than humans should farm the majority of their food supply and let nature recover. We only have one planet. Ever country, including industrial giants, should be held accountable for its actions.

You're right. Genetic pollution and non-native competition caused by escaped farm fish is a huge problem all over the world and can have a huge impact on the environment. Intensive fish farming practices cause stress within the population; this combined with the high density of fish in small areas creates a breeding ground for parasites and diseases.

Correction D.news the conversion is wrong . You said 1 pound of salmon takes 2.4 pounds of fish to produce but in the screen it shows 1.88 Kg which is 4.14 pounds not 2.4 . and it is stupid to waste good food for less food this waste should be illegal

The issue is that the labeling laws in my region doesn't mandate information whether the fishes are farmed or wild, fed with vegetable or not, so there is no way the consumers can tell the difference except by the price tag and color, but these alone are still very unreliable.

The salmon at the big box stores, like Sam's, & WalMart, Randazzios, & others are ALL farmed! Fortunately, living near the great lakes we catch a lot of walleye, but not enough to last the whole year so I need to buy from the markets! I eat canned tuna, salmon, mackerel & sardines, that are high in omega 3, are wild caught & the omega 3 reduces inflammation, the inflammation, causes arterial sclerosis & heart attacks! Were can I get the big slabs of WILD caught salmon, for Bar B Q ing, in the great lakes area? 🤔

You don't find Omega 3, 6 and 9 only in fish only, so you don't need to eat fish for those. There are many seeds that have omegas.

Algae, hemp, chia, borage, flax, walnuts, camelina to name the primary ones. The problem with most vegetarian sources of omega 3 is that they are not as concentrated and as bioavailable as fish oil, which has already been converted into EPA and DHA. Algae is one exception to this.

If fish farming is done right from feeding to all the proper nutrition (because we want to get the same nutrition is just common sense when we eat them) to the fish and taking care of them like maintaining the tank and making sure the fish won't be stressed, get ammonia poisoning or parasites then fish farming should be good. However just like any other type of farming, fish farming requires a lot of care and maintenance.

Why you should avoid? Because salmon sellers are not getting money anymore, and they say its also endangered so that they can higher the priced, there loosing money cause of farmed salmon, salmon is getting cheaper. Farmed salmon, are like farmed chicken that you eat in KFC.. And that also includes farmed cows and pigs in the market.. so what's the difference?

It confirms my prejudice against farmed fish. It's cheaper but I don't buy it. Plants use less complex molecules which is simpler. Meat I rarely eat it. Chicken feeds on seeds and should be quite easy but I am very suspicious on added supplements. What I'm worried about is anti-biotics and growth hormones which could give us cancer because were eating huge amounts of hormones during centuries. 20 years later we have problems.

Fish farming is horrible. By crowding fish into small pens, disease is spread rapidly which is then transmitted to wild salmon which has a devastating effect on wild salmon runs some years. This is especially true for Canadian salmon from British Columbia.
