I just tried the game demo on Gamescom and I must say it looks really promising.the controls are very good and the animations are great. It seems to have some focus on the combat but it doesn't seem to be as challenging as a Hollow Knight for example. There are a lot of secondary/optional paths that seem to be unlockable, so it does seem that it is going to the Metroidvania route. In general I liked a lot the 15 minits I had with it. I am looking forward for the release.

I'm not the biggest Prince of Persia fan (having only played the movie tie in game) but this is being made by the team Rayman team and both of the recent Rayman games have been awesome to play so a MetroidVania by the Rayman team sounds awesome. As for the art style I actually like it the devs mentioned being inspired by Japanese anime and in a digital foundry interview they mentioned that this game was initially targeting the switch (with every other platform being an offshoot of that) and considering the switches palty power compared to all the other platforms I think it's a good looking presentation you can color me very excited for this game.

Movie tie-in game...? What are you talking about? There is no video game based on the movie. The game called 'Sands of Time' is the original which the movie was (roughly) based on, not the other way around, and came out 7 years earlier. If you're thinking of the 5 different games called 'Forgotten Sands' that released shortly after the movie, that's a different title and those have nothing to do with the movie either, and are direct sequels/midquels to the game series. The cell-shaded Prince of Persia game with no subtitle from a few years earlier is completely unrelated to anything else. Unless you mean some random promotional mobile game that I'm not aware of, I can 100% guarantee you that there is no "movie tie-in" Prince of Persia game, lmao. So ... which game have you actually played? I'm curious now, lmao

I was thinking the same as you when looking at the characters: cartoon style superheroes from ancient times. Something to note is that they all have the exact same expression at all times in this trailer footage. I hope this isn't indicative of them being cardboard cutout characters. My outlook on this game is pretty much exactly what you said from 10:00 onward. Jay, you don't mince words while still remaining professional. I have cautious optimism for it. I hope it does well enough so that it isn't a one-and-done deal. To give a perhaps jaded take: I can imagine the initial corporate reason is because they overdid Assassin's Creed, and when trying to think of what to fill for one of their given development slots, a suggestion that might not have been popular but got traction is made by someone. This suggestion being to make a Prince of Persia game instead of another Assassin's Creed. I can also see them using 2D not just because its going back to the original roots, but because its a fairly safe option in terms of development costs in todays day and age. I can imagine that this is them testing the waters of the market to see if there is any actual interest in a PoP game. And that if there is no other games planned beyond this one, a lot of the IP is riding on this singular game to do financially well and have good reception. As if it fails, Ubisoft may not gamble on another entry.

For a Metroidvania, stylized art direction is much better suited than a grounded one, since it age and communicates better for the genre. I'm concerned for the level design, story and fantasy elements. As long as those are good enough and the gameplay is great, this could very much be a success.

@sosaysjay Жыл бұрын
I won't be able to make a video on that unfortunately, but I will say that my thoughts are pretty consistent with what I went over in the initial gameplay trailer we got a couple weeks ago. The AI vision cones are clearly improved over Valhalla, and the reintegration of systemic social stealth means that the AI has been entirely overhauled which is great to see. Free running is looking more and more like there will be no back ejects or controlled descent options, and while I was not as eager for that as some people, I was a bit thrown off by the fact that they discussed elevators and vaulting as returning features even though they have been in all the newer games as well. I find myself concerned about the animations, not because I dislike returning animations but because there were a lot of sluggish animations in Valhalla that would kill momentum. For assassinations, I hope that they don't have Basim freeze in place for up to a second before actually performing the kill like Eivor sometimes would. For sprinting, I saw that Basim seems to have the same jogging animation as Eivor, and the jog-to-sprint function was terrible in Valhalla. I hope that if they retain it, it will be a hold button system instead of toggle. I noticed the parry from Valhalla is back as well, and I hope it is a much more satisfying and mechanically clean one that what we had in Valhalla. Facial animations are also clearly rigged the same as Valhalla, which makes sense, but I found them uglier in Valhalla than in Odyssey so I wish they had made more changes. I never expected them to schedule full mocap filming for a game with this budget, but hopefully there are some nice cutscenes, since Odyssey and Valhalla both had well done cutscenes interspersed throughout. Free running looks like it may not be more complex, but the world design definitely is, and in all honesty I think a lot of people will be happy with it. A ton of people play AC2 and even Unity just holding buttons, side ejects and descents and all that stuff is kind of niche, so the fact that the world is more complex and you aren't forced to ground level is great. Probably my biggest concern is Ubisoft's lack of confidence. It is like they are fighting to keep certain things vague, like the actual complexity of free running, and they aren't showing us things that flesh out the systems. I have seen enough to know I will have a great time exploring Baghdad and that free running and stealth will both be better than the last game. But I do think the people who want this to be a return to Unity or something are going to be disappointed, because this was never going to be that.

Also, in the "history of PoP" section, you forgot to mention 2 DS games: The Fallen King, which is a sequel to the 2006 reboot, and The Forgotten Sands, which follows, I think, a plot similar to the console game of the same name. Both are stylus based 2d platformers with some fights and some puzzles based off pushing blocks and using some kind of magic (sand manipulation for TFS and corruption manipulation for TFK). They are both great games for the DS and where among my favorite games when I was a kid. Later on, I got the reboot game on the xbox360 and it was fun. I don't know if it's just because that's the way I first discovered the franchise, but I really like the style of the 2006 reboot and the DS sequel (The Fallen King) with the blue and red turban/scarf and the single clawed glove. The light magic vs corruption looks good as well and I really love the Zoroastrianism inspiration.

I did have a section on those games but I decided to cut it since when all is said and done this will be the first 2D PoP game that Ubisoft will have built to stand on its own (and actually marketed). I’d definitely say those games are still worth playing, along with the Wii version of forgotten sands which I think also holds its own pretty well, but this series hasn’t had what I would call a “mainline” 2D PoP game in 30 years and it does leave me intrigued.
@DaveGrean Жыл бұрын
The plot isn't similar at all to the PC/PS3/Xbox version (assuming that's the one you meant, since the Wii is technically also a 'console'). In fact, the DS game is the only one in the Forgotten Sands subseries to take place at the end of the Prince of Persia timeline, after Two Thrones, rather than between Sands of Time and Warrior Within. I don't know if you know this, but there are 4 completely different Prince of Persia games called "Forgotten Sands" with completely different stories that take place at different points in time. It's not just the same game ported to different consoles, or roughly the same storyline adapted to different types of gameplay, like you'd usually expect with identically titled games simultaneously released on different consoles. It's one of the most bafflingly confusing marketing choices I've ever known a company to make, since even a decade later there are still actual fans of the series that are discovering for the first time that there are 3 entire games they've yet to play, lmao. The chronological order of events is more or less Sands of Time -> Forgotten Sands PC/PS3/Xbox -> Forgotten Sands Wii -> Forgotten Sands PSP -> Battles of PoP -> Warrior Within -> Two Thrones -> Forgotten Sands DS

I think this is the PERFECT style for POP. First of all, the combat is tight and the mechanics seem great. The franchise has gone back to its roots. Secondly, the lore is actually going to be based on real Persian mythology, which is a win win for me. There are sp many routes to go from there in the future. Thirdly, they seem to have gotten rid of the strange vibe from the 2008 reboot and everything seems more "realistic" in this story. The only thing I would prefer is if we were playing as the prince. But Sargon is definitely interesting so I'm fine with it overall. I do feel a little strange playing as a character who looks so much like Michael B. Jordan but it doesn't bother me much. I still honestly think the alpha gameplay of prince of persia redemption could have easily take the series in a new direction but still be set in the sands of time timeline. This just reminds me of darksiders

Tbh I like the metroidvania formula but the protagonist design seems not to be fit in a Persian era idk. Sorry, someone might get angry but to give respect for the franchise they should still stay true to the aesthetic and design to the past titles.. I'm not against to the hairstyles or the race or whatnot..

Hi this is the opinion I did at Ubisoft trailer from this game they post in KZbin from the Summer Games Fest from last weak. “Ubisoft Montpellier how dare you put Prince Of Persia franchise like this. This game does not represent Prince Of Persia at all. First a Non Prince main protagonist. Second a Semi God or God style like God Of War Kratos style Prince? Prince Of Persia is a human-being franchise, not a God type game. Third a Non Ubisoft main studio a third partie studio game. Shame on you Ubisoft. You are destroying Prince Of Persia franchise. Plus the Prince Of Persia Sands Of Time Remake is not a good way to represent Prince Of Persia franchise like that. #NotMyPrince #PrinceOfPersiaFranchiseIsDeadByUbisoft”

I understand that you are upset, and that what I am about to say won't change that, but there are a couple things I'd like to address: 1) The Prince of Persia series has been rebooted three times, which means there are four versions of the character. Out of all four, only the Sands of Time Trilogy features an actual Prince as the main character. The original trilogy, the 2008 reboot, and this new game all feature a main character that is not a Prince, at least at the start. 2) We haven't really seen any powers here more ridiculous than what we saw in the other games, where you could rewind or stop time and face bosses like a mythological griffon or a 50 foot tall giant or the god of fate itself. 3) Ubisoft Montpellier has a strong track record as the makers of Beyond Good and Evil and the Rayman games. It's been a while since they were given big seller, but they are by no means a nothing studio. In fact, I have more confidence in them than I would Ubi Montreal at this point.
@goncalopereiraandrade Жыл бұрын
@@sosaysjay 1) I was talking about the original Sands Of Time Triology from the 2000s but when I wrote that phrase I saw that I was mistaken and omitted that part. 2) I understand but for me the powers of the main protagonist of this new 2D videogame are ridiculous and over powerful than all the games before this videogame. 3) I didn’t know this sorry. But Ubisoft Montpellier is so good currently that they showed Beyond Good and Evil 2 trailer a long time ago and it never saw the light of day.

To be fair about 2d games, you didn't mention the games on portable consoles, like the PSP version of Forgotten Sands (which despite the same title is a completely different game). I am not excited. This style just isn't for me. I'm not saying it's a s**t, because taste is subjective, but I really can't stand the art style. What a shame, it could have been a good concept
@sosaysjay Жыл бұрын
I considered including some of those, like the mobile Sands of Time trilogy and the Wii Forgotten Sands, but I figured I'd stuck to "mainline" games, which is difficult to quantify in this series.

To be fair, a Prince of Persia isn’t connected to a medieval time period. The old games up to Sands of Time took a lot of inspiration from One Thousand and One Nights, and you could argue they were trying to evoke something reminiscent of the Islamic golden age around the 10th Century. But Warrior Within was honestly more inspired by BDSM than any actual historical time period, and meanwhile Two Thrones takes place in Babylon which is an ancient city that existed long, long before the Islamic golden age. Then you have the reboot where the outfits are just modern fantasy but the religious themes are based around Ancient Iran as well. Looking at it all, this looks less historically inspired than sands of time, but more inspired than a game like Warrior Within.

Saying that people are mad because they're racist and don't like that the main character of this game has dreads is such a brain-dead argument. PoP fans have waited for years for this series to have some continuation. Ubisoft have been keeping us updated as to the SoT Remake for a while now. Longtime fans have been waiting for that game. And they blindside us with this? Now I'm NOT saying that the lost crown looks bad: it doesn't. I hope some of the mechanics make it in some form into SoTR. But all my grievances can be summed up into one statement: it's not the Prince. I have an attachment to the sands of time. It's my favourite game. I'm mad because while this looks like a really fun and challenging game, it's not the Prince. It doesn't look to have that charm and almost fairy-tale-esque flair that SoT has. No immersion beyond the gameplay. Ubisoft are putting the Prince in every game but his own game franchise and I cannot understand it. AC mirage has a Prince of Persia skin. This Sargon is a direct cross between SoT and WW Prince but with dreads. He even has a WW costume change if you preorder the game. Put the Prince in his own game, or make a new one that has nothing to do with the name, like they did with assassins creed. The lost crown would not have received backlash if it didn't have the PoP name. It really does look like a solid fun game on its own. But it's not the Prince.
@sosaysjay Жыл бұрын
I do understand wanting it to be more reminiscent of Sands of Time, but at the same time this series has always totally changed up its story and characters. The Prince in the original PoP versus PoP 3D get totally different designs and they gave him a goofy personality. Sands of Time made him an actual prince instead of a peasant who marries into the family, but then Warrior within immediately transformed his character into something angstier and more BDSM inspired for some reason. Then obviously we have the 2008 Prince, which was its own thing entirely. And so while I personally agree that SoT would be the best tone to hit, to say that tone is representative of the series as a whole would be difficult to justify, because this is really the fifth or sixth version of the character and, if I’m being honest, so far this feels closer to SoT character wise than any of the others. That’s not to say you can’t be upset, I just think it’s tough to say this ISN’T PoP when the series has varied so much.

It looks basically a PS2 game, which should not be played on PS4/PS5. Guys of ubisoft should understand, " if something looks good for you, it does not necessarily look good for everyone". You guys should understand Ubisoft Pune tried same type of so called, stylized graphics, but it received a negative feedback for prince of persia sands of time remake. Why dont ubisoft try the same type of graphics for assassins creed series. Prince of persia should have graphics better than assassins creed : origins, To conclude: dont make PS2 games for PS5.
