Working as a Dental Assistant is a HUGE ADVANTAGE prior to going to dental hygiene school. Working as a dental assistant can be a stepping stone to becoming a dental hygienist. Formally trained dental assistants will find it much easier in hygiene school because they've studied the theory of many of the topics you mentioned in your video. You said you weren't formally trained so that's the problem. On the Job Trained you only learned how to do things, you had no idea why you were doing them. You never studied the theory behind dental assisting and if you had you would have taken great x-rays as a dental assistant! So my takeaway on this...had you went to dental assisting school you would understand the huge advantage. Also working as a dental assistant allows the person to work in the dental environment to actually see if they will like working in the profession of dentistry. Lastly, there are some dental hygiene schools that require the prospective student to work s dental assistants. The reason they ask if you worked as a dental assistant on the entrance application is that they know if the candidate has, there's a greater chance they will be successful in dental hygiene school. Dental Hygiene school is no walk in the park, and any exposure to dentistry will help someone get through the program.

So the prerequisites to get into a dental program/major is mostly Biology classes, which they usually offer to be able to qualify. I live in Virginia and I’m currently taking the prerequisite classes they requires to qualify for their dental hygiene program, buy they also require 1 year of experience in the dental field. Hope this helps

Ok, so I grew up with ADD and struggled with paying attention in class. After high school, I decided to take one year off of school. I stuck to that commitment. I enrolled into a 9 month dental assisting program at 20 years old to prepare myself for dental hygiene school. It helped me so much because I know that I was not ready to enter a real college. Dental hygiene is a very rigorous and intense program and I was not mentally prepared for when I was 18-19 years old. I had a clear goal that dental hygiene was what I REALLY wanted to do. However, I would not recommend people to enroll in a dental assisting program if they are ready for dental hygiene school. I never used my degree in dental assisting. I entered dental hygiene as soon as I completed the dental assisting program. I wanted to make sure that I was college material. For some people, college is simply not made for them. Fresh out of dental assisting school, I noticed the information I learned fro dental assisting is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than dental hygiene. It has no use to me anymore. For the record, I believe that anyone can do anything they want to do. College is what you make of it. Every year I would see Freshmen arrive all excited to receive the "college experience". When they realize that college is about learning (not fun and games) they usually drop out somewhere within the first 2 semesters of pre-requisites. Please dont be that person. If you have a positive attitude about learning, you will do fine. Instead of worrying IF you will pass, say to yourself, " I KNOW I WILL PASS!" You WILL pass anything yoh want to if you put in the time and effort. As a precaution, I would like to remind everyone that dental hygiene school is VERY HARD... But it is NOT IMPOSSIBLE! Every other student in the classroom shares the same exact worries with you. But you are all in this together. I remember one of our clinic dentists of over 14 years said, "At one point, within these last two years, each of you will cry at least once... And that is normal". Attendance is mandatory; every absence or tardy will cost a 3 point deduction off your final grade (unless you file an excused absence. You must have either a signed doctor note or an obituary card is someone died). Also, my teachers always said, "Hygienists are never late; they are always on time". You aways have to make sure you have a patient scheduled in your chair. There are usually grade-point deductions for any lost clinic time (time is always of the essence). It is so FREAKING stressful finding a Board Patient. Will they qualify? Is their calculus easy to remove? Will they show up on time? Are they aware they must be present for 4 hours? And then you also have to worry if you removed ALL the calculus in the quadrant. And then you have to worry about causing "tissue trauma," that results in an automatic failure. Basically, there is always going to be a lot of worrying.. But majority of dental hygiene instructors are understanding. They remember dental hygiene school being the hardest thing they ever did. Financially, physically, and mentally draining. Expensive. Lots of work. Lots of information. One thing I miss about being a student is the "safety net" to protect me from my own mistakes. Im happy to say that I graduated with my Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences- Dental Hygiene in May 2020. I only have to take my National Board Exam left! I would also like to say that I have earned a few lifelong friends along the way. I wouldnt change my decision to enroll in dental hygiene school for anything. I am proud to say that I am 23 years old with a Bachelors degree. This is a great career to have. Good money with benefits, friendly co-workers, etc. I have never met a dental hygienist who is unhappy with their career move.

Your post just confirmed I'm going in the right direction. I'm so nervous because I really struggle with retaining information and getting a hold of certain subjects which had me feeling that dental hygienist isn't the way I should go. Your words just reassured me that as long as you put a positive mind to it, its possible. Thanks a lot!

@@TheChris7690 Hi, Im so happy to hear that someone actually had taken my advice. These past 3 years of my life were the hardest I have endured. It does stress you out when you see other classmates fail a course. During the First Semester of the Dental Hygiene Program, many other students realize this is not the correct career move for them. I think that it is important to have the mentality to never give up when you feel let down. If you are struggling, ask for help. If tutoring is available, stay on top of your gain. Take advantage of free education that will keep you on top of your game. Because it all ends once you graduate. Also, tutors teach you different "techniques" than materials taught in a standard classroom. Honestly, sometimes I WOULD become stressed out to the point where I wanted to change from a full-time student to part-time. However, it is not possible once you are enrolled into hygiene school. But the same thought always lingered in my mind: "What IF I pass?" And then the fear of failure would drive me to achieve more than a passing grade. In the end, I am happy that I never gave up on myself. Usually the ones who do not pass/move forward into the program are : 1) Not made for this career, OR 2) Not trying hard enough. Make sure that you are doing EVERYTHING your instructors tell you to do. Then you shouldnt have a problem. 😉

@@TheChris7690 I would also like to mention that many of my lectures are recorded during class. So before every exam, I would re-watch all the lectures relevant to the exam on 1.5X speed! You could also request testing accomodations from your school. My testing accomodations were: 1. Extra testing time in a private setting, avoiding any distractions 2. I would receive notes from my peers (With ADD, I have a difficult time focusing on what is important)

From the colleges I've been looking at just because you are a DA there is no advantage to get accepted automatically, like you said I agree it is a booster help but not a requirement. So I'm in Florida and our dental hygiene program is very competitive allowing only 12 students a year. The first part of being picked for the program is based on points and if you have previously been a dental assistant you receive more points and if you went to dental assisting at the college where I applied you received even more points! Plus almost half of the credit hours from assisting transfers over to dental hygiene. Disclosure is that our dental assisting program is 16 months (a lot longer than most). So it definitely depends on the college:) We needed 25 observation hours as well:) I'm just in the beginning of dental hygiene school and absolutely love watching your videos! Thank you for posting:)

Unfortunately, going to a dental assistance program before dental hygiene is necessary. At least where I live, all the school near me would not select an individual who does not have the CODA-accredited dental assistance certification. It sucks. I'm currently researching a school in south texas, like where the Brownsville area is. As i'm reading through their application packet, on their FAQs it states that having dental experience is not necessary but that if we have a dental assistant history, it would add extra points to our application and a higher chance of being accepted into the dental hygenist program. Throughout the packet, theres also a section that determines how many points we could possibly get from classes and their grades and one of them is 5 points for graduating from that school as a dental assistant or coming from another dental assistant program. For the classes, depending on the grades their possible points are 1-2 soooo getting the 5 points is kind of necessary to get into this competitive program. Supposedly they will have 100-140 applicants per period and will only accept about 30 so if I don't get those extra 5 points, i'm basically screwed. :) As im scrolling through the packet, theres a mock version of the application and one of the sections is for the dental employment history as well -.- I'm so confused if i should have the dental assistant experience or not.

I think you should be more clear on the topic. On the job trained Dental assistants don’t have as much as an advantage. However certified dental assistants and RDA/EFDA have TONS on knowledge of xrays and how to take them properly. We know the chemical make ups of every matierial in the office. We are knowledgeable of every detail of the dental office and how each job is done! (DR And HYG included) A CDA/RDA/EFDA would have a HUGE advantage going into dental hygiene school! We work hard. We have paid tons on money on schooling and obtaining and maintaining our certifications!

As a formally trained dental assistant, I did not have any significant advantages in hygiene school. Every point she made in this video is spot on. And a little over half of my class had experience; I don’t feel like any of us had an advantage over students with no experience. If anything, I felt like those who didn’t have any experience at all had a little advantage because they didn’t come in with any learned ‘bad habits’ and were easily adaptive to learning. Dental hygiene is completely different from dental assisting, so it’s hard to compare the two.

FORTIS college in MD wont let you in the dental hygiene program before going through their dental assisting program. I'm in the dental assisting program right now so I can do the hygiene program next. I think it will help a lot though since I've already learned so much about xrays and teeth

I am a DA and I recently got accepted into DH school ( I start next month whoooo!) My school did ask if I was a DA and offered an activity to complete writing about what you have observed your hygienists or doctors when completing cleanings or perio exams. It basically awarded you like 2 more points if you completed the essay (my school went off of a points system since it is a private technical college). My school did require 8 observation hours for all prospective students.

I’m a senior in high school and I’m studying to become a dental hygienist. But I took dental assistant first to learn the steps and learn great tips and stuff before dental hygienist is that a good idea that I’m takeing ? I really don’t wanna be a dental assistant forver…. Dental hygienist seems more of my type of job and pays really well. Also I don’t know how fasfa lends you the money

Yea but you can only use the license in Alabama and you can still work full time because it’s only one weekend a month. I haven’t seen any traditional accredited hygiene programs require assisting.
