"The purpose of learning economics is not to acquire a set of ready made answers to economic questions but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists." ~ Joan Robinson
@philzan3627
@philzan3627 2 жыл бұрын
Pretty much this. The vast majority of economists are incompetent and have no idea what they are saying nor do they actually understand and adapt their understandings to real life situations. And the argument of big data is the same fallacy promoted in every fields including science: just because you have a lot of data doesn't mean you know what it means or what it can mean. So if you want any use out of an econ degree, the one that shines the most is to not be deceived by other frauds.

Got into I.T. instead as that was my passion. I'm now an I.T. director, but the mental rigor and logical thinking from studying Economics was absolutely beneficial to my career.

@@dimasakbar7668 similar situation here, except I choose computer science thinking it's basically programming, as a way to avoid the maths computer engineers have to deal with. Ironically I ended being attracted towards Data Science and Machine Learning. I first tried to get by just learning the minimum maths needed for it, but now seeing that the field is constantly changing and evolving, I just decided to go hard-core on the maths and end this imposter syndrome relation I have with mathematics once and for all. I'm hoping to take intro to proofs and mathematical reasoning, vector calculus and linear algebra next semester, followed by stochastic probability, abstract algebra and Real & Complex Analysis the following semester. Sure the courses I have in mind may not be related to Data Science (with the exception of probability and linear algebra) but the industry will always change as new knowledge and ideas are brought out into the world. And being well versed in mathematics seems like one of the best ways to adapt to changes in the industry, years ahead of the curve.

I somewhat regret majoring in Economics. It is a very broad degree, and it left me with very few skills that I could actually bring to an organization. People say that it opens a lot of potential careers, but you are usually not as qualified as other majors are for most careers. You end up having to compete with Finance and Accounting majors for Finance and Accounting jobs. You compete with Math and Statistics majors for jobs that are looking for people with a strong quantitative background. You compete with CS and IS majors for data analytics and data science jobs. Economics is a good degree for people who don't know what they want to do specifically because it leaves you with many options, but it may be better to study something else if you know what you want to do (unless you plan to do a PhD in economics).

It’s all about what you make of it. I did Econ myself (at a state school) and had no problem getting job opportunities in multiple fields after graduating. I'd like to know if anyone has seriously studied the economics of economics as profession. Who employs economists and which employers pays the highest wages? Could there be any perverse incentives in this jobs market, such that it pays best to promote theories which favour the interests of top employers (governments, corporations, banks etc)? If economists believe that it's rational to maximise one's own economic interests, how can we trust them to tell us what policies will really be best for the general public, as opposed to their employers?

That would include central banks, statistical data collection centers, universities, research centers for macroecnomic trends, government cabinets etc. Those strict economic jobs are usually paid less than economists who took their degree and went to work in marketing, finance, sales etc. As for what economists believe, that isnt the case, especially when comes to 'economists economists' they're more interested in scientific research, theory and implementing theories in practice. Its also important to know that current economic models (modern economics) are nothing akin to types discussed online (laissez-faire or communism).

@@ANBU_EU Thanks, this is interesting. You seem to be speaking from personal knowledge of the profession and what you say sounds plausible, but I'd like to know where data can be found to show where economics graduates and PhDs work, how much they earn and so on. I suspect there may be differences between Europe and the USA - where, I'm told, an Economics PhD can earn three times the salary of a humble treasury analyst working for any one of some 200 political "think tanks"... and even more than that in Wall Street. Again, this is only anecdotal, but it's interesting nonetheless! As to what "economists believe" - I didn't claim that all economists hold the narrow view I mentioned, and I agree that many don't, these days - but in my experience of talking to a fair number of economics graduates in the UK and USA, it's shocking how many of them still do!

What government ? Didn't most of governments is a democracy government that means the people (public) choose and control the government with a representative or directly. So a government chosen by the people. Isn't it logical to think that an economist work under said government would definitely work to the best of general public ? We exclude the Corruption factor of course.

@@mantabsekali920 Your argument is perfectly logical, but almost totally divorced from objective reality. Where have I noticed that way of thinking before... Oh yes, I know - mainstream economics! :) :) I suggest you read "Democracy in America" by Gilens and Page. Their research shows that over many decades, the chances of legislation being passed in the senate has been directly proportional to it's popularity with billionaires and corporations, and inversely proportional to its popularity with the general public. Guess which bills tend to be enthusiastically supported by government paid economists?

I studied economy for 2 years before I change to my real passion, history. But I'm glad I studied economy cause... I feel a little bit more grounded here. Social scientists, specially students, can be a little emotional. Studying economy helped me in trying to understand movements in history as a machine like the market, with unpredictable results due to infinite factors. Not to critique my fellow social scientists, but they do can get a bit idealistic. And as the video says, be interdisciplinar. It's the best way to break through the limits of your field. The more you know the more in general you can understand your field of expertise.

I studied accounting. Not to get a job, but to understand bookkeeping and tax. I have 8 rental properties now, but at the time I had 2. Understanding the tax benefits and keeping good books allows you to know your worth, budget accordingly for overheads and negate tax liabilities. For each property, I have a spreadsheet that I can put values in to give me things like current market value, mortgage liability, cost to sell, gross profit, depreciation less depreciated, capital gains liability, net profit.

Former economics major here- I would totally recommend going into economics, but he is right, you will likely need additional skills and/or connections to be employable. Internships in the field are vital for economics in a way that they aren’t as much in other professions. For this reason, I recommend people going into economics go to either an institution well known for economics or attend a small university where they can maintain good relationships with their professors. I took the latter path and one of my professors recommended me for a position at an economic think tank. Upon graduation I had several good offers to be a junior associate or researcher at other think tanks full time. I ended up deciding to instead continue my education through law school, but a career in economic policy was not unattainable for me. I have compiled a list of professions with the minor and/or skill set necessary to be successful in the field of economics. Keep in mind that to advance, many will require a graduate degree like an MBA, MPA, PhD, or JD. Economic Policy analyst: Econ + Poly Sci Financial advisor: Econ + Sales Financial model software developer: Econ + IT Economics researcher: Econ + Econometrics Just FYI as well, pretty much any position for people with a finance degree is fair game for Econ majors as are many poly sci positions. Econ is truly a versatile and useful degree and so long as you maintain a decent GPA and are proactive about looking for internship and employment opportunities, you shouldn’t have an issue finding a job. Keep in mind though that many firms hiring Econ majors (especially prestigious ones) will start the hiring process in the fall long before whatever summer opening exists and the early bird will get the worm. Generally people I know who failed to get an internship that satisfied them were the ones who waited to send in applications until it was too late.

Depends on your goals. Engineering is a great degree no doubt, but studying engineering to become something unrelated to engineering is just not efficient. Imagine you know what you want to do and spend 4+ years of your life studying another degree just to hope that you will learn the skills the other job needs on the fly and not use your original degree again. I think a career path is much more nuanced than meets the eye.

For me, it's a very interesting subject revolving around scarcity of resources and unlimited wants, the financial world that we live in, how the governments make financial decisions and how these policies affect the common man etc. I hope to do an M.Stat after graduating so I can understand this economic system further (and hope to make some of my own contributions too).

If you wanna be good at pretending, convincing etc, economics seems like a good fit. I've taken the first few courses in economics in university and it was both very interesting and has helped me understand a lot of other things. In many ways, economics describe things very efficiently almost to the point where you can discuss things you couldn't think about otherwise. I spoke to a teacher once that had read a whole book full of philosophy that had taught her about negative externalities and the tragedy of the commons which would at most take a few hours to learn while studying economics.

There are two primary reasons to take an econ bachelor's degree (1) to get an analyst job and (2) to prepare yourself for the master's degree in economics. For (1), you'll learn mostly econometrics, business-related mathematics and "how to think like an economist". For (2), all the "real world" stuff are in "master's and beyond". A finance/business degree is more useful for someone who wants to do analyst jobs (if they give you some basic econometrics and mathematics that is). It's similar to "don't expect to know literally rocket science to work for NASA from basic physics you learn in high school". There's a reason big and influential economic research organizations and journals like the American Economic Association and JEL or JER only (or mostly) hire and publish works from actually PhD's and Master's.
