Daniel should NOT sell his "cheaper" pieces. I've had 4 Rolexes over the last 40 years; a 70's red-letter Sea Dweller, a 2 tone Sub and 2 GMT 2s. 3 were sold, one stolen. Now I'm down to one, a Sinn EZM 3F and very happy to not be chasing grails anymore. My late father once told me that "Most of the time, the wanting is more fun than the having." Now, at 66 years old, I realize how right he was.

I follow a similar philosophy, buy what I truly want rather than buy what strikes my fancy today. To achieve this I tend to not buy on impulse, but take months deciding on what I want. I always say “never finance a hobby” so I buy what I can, save for what I want and when I look into my WatchBox I see a collection that started when I could hardly afford to buy one to ones that are worth thousands. Each one I got to remind me of a particular moment or event, each one I researched and read up on and determined which one I wanted. I wear them all, I don’t worry about the odd bump or scratch as they just add to the story behind each one. I always tell people, when they ask, to buy what they like, never worry about what others think and just buy what they enjoy. It’s their collection after all, it’s reflective of their tastes and their growth as a collector.
@valengreymoon56234 жыл бұрын
@@wayneturner1336 That's the whole idea, and I agree with it. Buy with the heart, not the head, or you'll just find yourself not wearing that "investment piece", leaving it in a safe somewhere, or selling it. Just like classic cars. Why buy and not drive it? That's what it was made for.
@Megatraum5042 жыл бұрын
just keep that same notion for replicas and clones then please. It's what i can afford. It's what I like. For someone like me, i could never justify buying a time piece for more than a thousand dollars. It makes no sense to me why someone would buy a watch like a tudor that is an homage to a rolex, that still costs thousands of dollars., when there are high tier clones that often have better movements or the same eta movements you see in "affordable" watches that only cost $500. I'm ranting a bit, but i feel like many people think the way you do, until it comes to clones. The watch snobs love shitting on clones and anyone who wears them .

My approach: Set your goal, save your money, do your research, enjoy the journey. I recently saved for then bought a Grand Seiko GMT Quartz. After dropping over $3k on a watch, I was expecting buyer’s remorse. It didn’t happen. I was in this predicament several years when I was wearing a lot of fashion watches. I sold them all to buy a Rolex Sub. Once I purchased my first Rolex I quickly found myself owning 4 of them. As I learned more about watches I moved into more expensive brand like Patek, AP and a few others. Fast forward to today I reduced my collection to just a few grail pieces and several unique boutique pieces. I said all that to say watch collections are ever evolving. I've always wanted a high end watch, so I bought one, when I turned 30 (like someone I know), and it was a dress watch, fitting for my every day wear, since my work requires a suit and a tie, on an every day basis. And I thought that was it. But then, I needed a diving watch, for the seaside and vacation. Then a beater, for around the house. Then a chronograph caught my eye. Then I needed a digital beater for the gym... And so on and so forth. One thing is for sure, a true watch lover, can't stop on a one watch, even if it's A.Lange & Sohne minute repeater.

But if you have the cash in the bank and have the option of interest free credit (and the self control not to spend the cash on something else) then why not make a little interest for yourself. I wouldn't do 48 months though - 12 months would be better. Of course bit of a mute point right now as interest rates are so low as to be pointless. Personally, I pay cash for everything. Houses, cars, watches etc..... If the SHTF nobody can take anything from me.

Hi TGV Tough question. There is a kind of mid term strategy that might satisfy many people though. It just requires you being very conscious about what kind of guy/girl you are. If you’re of the formal kind, buy an expensive dress watch and some more affordable pieces for sports, work purposes and so on. If you’re the sporty kind buy an expensive diver and some cheaper ones for dress, work etc. You get the general idea I suppose😂 This way you get to have your grail watch for the purpose where you’ll appreciate it the most and at the same time enjoy a collection... Not that I’ve been able to live up to this strategy - I generally use too much money on watches😏 Keep up the good work👍
@benjaminbarrera2144 жыл бұрын
Exactly, I'm a formal person so an enormous dive watch on me would be absolutely ridiculous! Almost all of my watches are vintage and would be considered dress watches. But sports watches didn't exist in the 20s-40s, the average everyday watch from that time is now considered dressy.

Ok....I have to admit that your channel has got me into watches at a late age (I'm 65)...never been much of a watch guy but saw your video about what is so appealing about watch collecting....Yes I'm still resisting but have about a half doz. watches (some contentious as far a collectors but I like them)...from your recomendations I've bought my first Seiko 5 and an Orient which at around $360 is the most I've ever spent on a watch. Great YT channel and I'm learning so much from you! I think it might be a thing about being social isolating these days and (at the risk of becoming too much of a consumer) I've found another interest/hobby that I didn't have before. As for wanting a holy grail watch, I look at it the same way I look at cars. I can buy outright a car the most people might consider a holy grail car but I don't because I've got it in my head a top price I'd pay for any car (which is much lower)....same with watches, I actually could buy a high end luxury watch but, sorry my limit on what I'd ever spend on a watch is
@nunosousavieira40234 жыл бұрын
By my humble experience, it is very easy to fall madly in love for a watch and maybe in two months the fire will fade away, because you rediscovered some other whatch that you did not pay attention well before. One should always meditate for a long time about a piece - if it doesnt come off of your head for that period, then it is the right choice to purchase.
@miroslavrnjakovic88504 жыл бұрын
True, but that is why I buy pre owned, so I don't get big burns, in case of a resale. I've owned 3 Seamasters and 2 speedys (I have only 1 seamaster now), and 3 different Hublots (I have 1 now), in different periods of time, since I needed experience to figure out which refference I really like. In my experience, wearing a watch for some time is the only solid method, for figuring out, what you really like. And most people are affraid of selling, and trading, I was too, but after a while, you get the hang of it, plus, you get the chance to get many pieces through your hands. For example, I have a 5 piece collection, but over the five years I have been collecting, I owned 13 different watches, most of them in 2-5k price range.
@nunosousavieira40234 жыл бұрын
@@miroslavrnjakovic8850 you are right, thats a good way to understand yourself. But also takes maturity to buy and sell a watch and being ok with that! If youre able to do so, you have many watches to enjoy and that is a win
@Samurai99014 жыл бұрын
This was educational and inspirational at the same time. You could call it the gold standard of watches related videos. I'm also new to watch collecting and have compiled a list of watches I'm interested in but over time my attention does shift over to other pieces which may be becoming rare or hard to find. In the end all I want is good value for money.

To me, a collection of maybe 10 $500-1000 watches is much better than a single Rolex. I'd much rather have multiple affordable quality watches than a single grail watch.

I would definitely miss changing watches on a daily basis. A friend of mine is saving up for a Rolex as his first mechanical watch and I´m urging him to start with a Hamilton or something else in the 500-Euro range to get used to the concept of a mechanical watch before spending 10k on his grail watch.

Good suggestion. My first automatic watch is the Hamilton khaki field officer. Affordable under £400.

@@DjVader112 Absolutely: When I started getting into watches around 4 years ago, I was just the same as KlausM54's friend: immediately wanted to buy a Speedmaster Man on the Moon and NOTHING else ... Needless to say, I'm proudly wearing an Oris now which I've learned to appreciate greatly ever since I bought it 3 years ago :) I'm currently saving for an Explorer I or a Seamaster Aqua Terra 150, but open for any other brands as well, not just these two (Who knows, maybe I'll end up with a Pepsi Tudor that I'll appreciate greatly)

Recently got into watches. I'm glad I bumped into this. I own a couple of Timex and Casio G Shocks. Dabbled in my first expensive one with a Grand Seiko and boy do I love it. I had always aspired to an Omega or a Rolex but the Seiko's understated styling and class is just too charming. I'm done with expensive watches for a few years. Will wait for a special event in my life to mark it with a new one.

Personally, watch collection is a very personal thing. I am a one brand collector (orient star) and the reason is, i just dont know. We go through a cycle but having just 1 grail watch to give up a collection, just doesnt add up, in my thought.
@Lamattack4 жыл бұрын
I think it definitely depends on the person. I admire my father because he's worn the same Movado Museum for almost 2 decades now. He's the kind of person where one good watch is enough and it serves it's purpose. Whereas for myself, I'm just beginning my collection. I want to experience and learn about different types of watches, their companies, and purposes. I guess a good question to ask would be, "would the experiences and happiness from one watch outweigh that of having multiple".
@iburley_4 жыл бұрын
*Definitely* keep the "cheaper" watches. You bought them for a reason, something about them drew your eye, and that's what collecting is all about. I've got a Cadence Radian watch that I bought when I was younger that I still wear. It's a cheapo quartz movement and a printed dial, but it's got charm.

I’d always prefer a collection of affordable watches over one specific high value piece. I’d absolutely love to own a rhodium platinum Rolex Yachtmaster 40 with the azure toned seconds hand, however I’m very happy with my growing “collection” of more reasonably priced watches. I have five Invictas (don’t judge me), a Richard LeGrand, a Zelos, a Lorier, a Feice and a Rocos all for a fraction of what one Rolex is valued at.

I have loved watches since the 3rd grade (My mum gifted me with a Mickey Mouse Quartz watch) when I had no idea about luxury watches or movements. So I love watches for what they are, not as status symbols or investments. Digital and Quartz watches make me as giddy as my Autos, but I DO aspire to own a luxury watch someday. All in due time. The more you experience, the more you can narrow down what you would want in your expensive grail watch. Understanding how you rotate your watches will help. I have 1 dress, 2 casual, 1 beater. What I realised was, ever since I bought my second casual watch, I have never rotated back to my first casual watch. So for me, I now know that I'm not the kind to rotate watches, and therefore need to be very deliberate whenever I think about buying a new watch as more likely it will replace my current one.
