Nice review ! The first thing I did to my new trek fuel ex 8 was throw those slow rolling bontrager tires in the trash. I'm running vittoria agarro's now , way better.

Wow that’s interesting I need to try those and yes I hated those stock tires! Thank you so much for the comments they mean a ton 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

8:36 the drift thing you feel can be due to the tyres, but also due to the short chainstay. and as Trek keeps using the same chainstay length on all sizes, this results in bigger sizes being more drifty and loop out easier, and smaller models resist drifting more. Years ago I tried Bontrager SE4 Team Issue. they were horrible on dirt I could not lean the bike as far as Maxxis High Roller 2, the tyre lost grip and I crashed. Definitely not my fault, that tyre also transitioned, turned fast, the rubber was not as grippy/sticky. the thread pattern was not optimal I guess too. Maybe you are experiencing the same issue. back in 2014 the bikes had a longer chainstay. mine had quite long, only 5mm shorter than my G1, despite the size and geometry did not match that. But now I don't use Maxxis tyres, they gripped well, but the side knobs squirmed too much for my liking, now I use Michelin Wild Enduro, huge improvement, track stands are easier. the side knobs are much more supportive and squirm less. with the slack head angle, you really need the side knobs to be supportive and squirm less.

I have a 2020 trek slash 9.8 project one and love it. However I made a few upgrades from the Rockshox suspension and went with a Fox float factory 160mm travel 38 grip 2 and a Fox float factory x2 in the rear. Bike is a dream to ride.

I was crazy impressed, I found myself getting up the next day and wanting to take it out more than my yeti sb130 it just felt so good. It was a nice change. How tall are you and have you experienced that the seat post sticks out too much?
@five-omtb75363 жыл бұрын
@@MTBdropIN I’m 5’9” and I ride a medium with a 125mm dropper. I also run 170mm cranks. The dropper does stick out quite a bit, but I haven’t had issues with the saddle not dropping down low enough, or getting hung up on the saddle. I haven’t seen a need to run a 150mm dropper, nor do I think I could stuff one low enough in the seat tube because the seat tube has a bend in it.
@MTBdropIN3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is the only draw back that I’m seeing for my height . But the bike is crazy fun and I didn’t experience any problems like you said
@jeremyc18613 жыл бұрын
If you dropped down a size on your 130 it would corner just as good. I'm the same height as you and had the same issues on my medium 130, it sucked in the corners, I also felt like I was just along for the ride a lot of times. I decided to drop down to a small with a 50mm stem and it's a 100 times better, the tighter cockpit takes a little getting used to while seated but its perfect out of the saddle.
@MTBdropIN3 жыл бұрын
That’s very interesting, over time I have learned to get faster in the corners on it, it’s a pig for sure, but I’m definitely a lot faster in the chunk and anything’s that’s not a berm. The medium I feel handles speed a lot better since the wheel base is longer. But I’d probably completely trip out and love the small

I wonder if that drifty feeling you got was from those Bontrager tires. They definitely are somewhat balloon likes bike in on the shock is a revelation. It pedals really well in that setting and still has the chops for the gnar.
@MTBdropIN3 жыл бұрын
I feel the same and are you referring to no transfer tires or rims?
@mtbboy19933 жыл бұрын
My experience with Trek in the past was really bad, with several bikes, I see they still have thee absurd kinked seat tube, which reduces the insertion depth of the dropper post. but it's nice Trek finally made the geometry and sizing better. hopefully, this bike won't drive you crazy with issues. the 2014 Fuel EX (alu) was so bad. hanger bent on every ride, bearings got pushed out at Evo link super flexy, shock binding, to the point of slight colour difference on shock coating. but I see the newer bikes are stiffer, and I chatted with a local kid who has the current fuel ex, with no issues. does this bike still have issues with MinoLink falling off and lose bolts? previous models did. I also had issues with 2014 model, they came loose quite often, but despite the stiffening up of the frame on newer models others had the same issue. I've seen the 2019 or 2020( i don't remember) Slash Carbon model had issues with snapping headtubes. a guy in a Send 'er Buds video snapped two frames.
