Just be careful not to transmit on non FRS channels and stay below the maximum power outpit, these are ham radios and that is illegal to do without being certified. Good luck!

I Recently bought a uv-5r. I already have two Baofeng GT 3 Radios. I actually prefer the gt3 in some ways such as the buttons are easier to press if you have large fingers. Its also nicely shaped when holding, the uv5r is abit sharper in the hand. But the uv5r is the most popular and so its easier to get larger or replacement batteries etc. I bought mine for £27 and i think i payed a little less for the GT3. For prices like that, i cant complain, infact i think they are built really solid for the cheap price. Im resolving my small niggle of it feeling sharp in the hand by ordering a rubber cover, but i didnt check that the radio can fit in the charger with the cover on, but i guess im going to find out in a few days when it arrives. I bought the attachment that runs the radio off the 12v socket in the car when im out and about in the car. I have the external microphones as well which is also useful in the car. There are lots of assoceries you can get for them. I did buy one for a friend to link with them and they are 4 miles away with a whole city between us but im on a height , but i honestly dont know how thats going to go as im only doing the test today but they are moving alot closer after christmas and we might get a few more friends involved so we can have a network of other people to talk to.

One thing missed is that Baofeng UV-5R does wideband and narrowbnd which will make a difference to distance too as wideband will allow you get through solid matter better.... But wideband could and may interfere with frequencies close to the other frequencies used.
@billyandrew
@billyandrew 3 жыл бұрын
I know nothing about the subject. Basically, I'm wandering about in the dark with my hands out in front of me, so don't understand what you mean, except that wideband transmits...through walls, maybe? Can you break it down into simple terms for an idiot like me, as I think your comment is important. I don't know how, but I just do. Does that make any sense?
@geoffpriestley7001
@geoffpriestley7001 3 жыл бұрын
@@billyandrew wide band uses more of the radio spectrum to transmit the same signal it mean that instead of getting say 40 channels you only get 20 . on the radio you can tune in 12.5 or 25 steps so if you use wide band your suppose to set this to 25. if you use narrow you can use 12.5 and get 40 channels for the same anout of radio spectrum used. most people use narrow and the 12.5 setting.as for going through walls, the lower the frequency the better the " penetration " . so the 156 mhz will in theory go further than the 446mhz frequency. On 446 in my area its sometimes a bit crowded there are schools and some warehouses useing them

Where I live most of the county has gone to digital trunked systems but every now and then I might catch someone using old frequencies. For the most part it's just the good old NOAA but even with the supplied runttenna I can pick up handheld transmissions from several miles away or more. I haven't found a good spot for scanning yet but I can move to particular parts of the yard and pick up some conversations pretty clearly. Usually just some cordial HAM's checking up on each other and making sure everyone is ok. We used to use these years ago working security posts when I was in it just for the paycheck at the time and I had no idea what I was holding. I just looked at it like a walkie-talkie radio because it was set and locked. It really does want to make me get into the hobby though because I've been trying to learn electronics for something like a decade now and feel ashamed to have never delved into radio more than making toys and gadgets. I think there was a time where a lot of HAMS rather liked the idea of being part of a niche and obscure group of people, but it seems nowadays there is less and less activity in the air for beginners to listen in on or it's getting too expensive to do, so I'd imagine any and all HAMS would like to see a growth spurt in activity. I wouldn't be able to listen in on local police channels or anything but I like the idea of leaving a radio on just in case someone comes through on the other end whether they just want to talk, or have useful information, or even needs emergency help. Just a really handy knowledge to have it seems.

@@Netflix9919 The reason it's illegal is because the power limit for PMR446 is 0.5 watts and the lowest the Baofeng UV-5r can do is 1 watt. If you want to transmit on PMR446 with a Baofeng, just go for it as the law is never enforced anyway.

Great vid. I bought two of these a while ago @ £17 each...how mad is that. They have been in my top drawer, unused for a while so I have spent the day researching Ofcom etc to find out exactly where I stand as I always thought these radios were legal at 446MHz but obviously I was wrong. I don't regret buying them as I intend to do a foundation course and get licensed up to 10W...but anyway I bet they get people interested in Amateur Radio and that can't be bad! One of the interesting things about these radios is the variable transmitting power. I've had two for months, both put out between 4 and 5.3 watts on high power, after the battery has been fully charged. Imagine my surprise when testing two new ones received this morning. A red one put out 5.3 watts, but the blue one gave an indicated 7 watts on VHF! This was before I had charged them! I never take any notice of manufacturers claims about transmit powers; so many claim "8 watts" like the UV-9R plus does, but it's still between 5. 3 and 6.2 watts. on VHF, and lower on UHF. The only radios that DO radiate high power, are the Retevis RT 5 and Baofeng UV-82, and I have three of them. Good radios.

So what would be the shortest aerial to put on this to reduce range to somewhere near the normal 0.5w pmr radio's when in low power 1w mode?. I have a pair of uv-5r's and just wan't short 1 mile communications like a normal pmr 0.5w system for use across a few fields without flooding local pmr in the next village lol... any suggestions?
@CB-RADIO-UK
@CB-RADIO-UK 5 жыл бұрын
You can get stubby antennas but i think the range would prob be nearer one field only. I think i would just keep the standard antenna and run on low power.
@exgenica
@exgenica 5 жыл бұрын
Whatever antenna you use, make sure the SWR is less than 1.5:1. Anything higher than 1.5 is likely to damage the radio per BaoFeng user manuals. Note that an SWR=1.5 means ONLY 4% of the power is reflected back. That isn't much, but it's enough to kill some radios. Note also that it's not linear. An SWR=3.0 means 25% of the power is reflected back...about 6 times more power than at SWR=1.5, so increasing SWR is bad...very bad. Many medium length...the size usually sold with the radios..."rubber duck" antennae have fairly high SWRs already. Add on that some of the antennae available out there are dirt-cheap low-quality manufactured and you really need to be careful. In my opinion, investing in a high-quality SWR/power meter is a necessity. (notes: even quality meters may be specified to work only at higher power levels (like 4W and above). At lower power levels you can't even use the meter's in-built CALibrate for SWR readings. In addition, to obtain a more accurate SWR value, do NOT rely on the meter's SWR scale. Instead, CALCULATE the SWR using the Forward Power and Reflected Power values...which actually define the SWR. Pf=forward power; Pr=reflected power SWR=( Pf^1/2 + Pr^1/2) / ( Pf^1/2 - Pr^1/2). ^1/2 means square root...so X^1/2 is square root of X. Thus, if Pf=4.8W and Pr=0.2W, then SWR=(4.8^1/2 + 0.2^1/2) / (4.8^1/2 - 0.2^1/2) SWR=(2.19+0.447)/(2.19-0.447) SWR=( 2.64/1.74 ) SWR=1.52 (which is unacceptable given the BaoFeng warning) (note: to get closer to calculating "worst case" if in doubt, I round DOWN the Pf I read and round UP the Pr when using calculator, and use only 3 digits from the calculator at any time (and yeah, I know it's not good to 3 significant digits...but people think more numbers=better...so there ya go)

The best thing for scanning 446 with a uv5r would be to program the 446 Freqs into the memory mode and then use scan (which the audio sounds like it says scanning beacon but it is really saying scanning begin)
@CB-RADIO-UK
@CB-RADIO-UK 6 жыл бұрын
Yes you can do that. As Amatuer tech says its prob best to save all the legal PMR freq's in the radio's memory and do a mem scan as you will find them sooner.

@CB-RADIO-UK 5 жыл бұрын
No problems to listen. If you want to use the ham bands the radio can transmit then you need a license. The radio will transmit on the public 446 Mhz channels. No licence is required but the radio will not conform to the letter of the law (Ofcom) so is illegal. However most people use these on PMR without an issue.

Hi. Ive not tried any mag mounted antennas for these handhelds. What you would be looking for is a 2m/70cm antenna which should also work on 446 Mhz PMR band. I had a look on Amazon and it seems a micro taxi style is around £20. www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=70cm+magmount
