An Aussie here - After finally giving up on Landrovers, I decided to go for a made in Japan 4x4 and it was the 3.2L turbo diesel that took the biscuit. It needed to be tough enough to cope with mud, dust, water crossings and pulling a heavy camper trailer around Oz. The Pajero is an incredibly reliable, strong, comfortable and fuel efficient form of transport. 10 years later and I'm still singing the praises of the Pajero. I agree whole heartedly with your advise to Mitsubishi Japan about bringing out a new model with squarer looks, essentially the old Defender but with comfort and reliability would do me just fine. With Pajero no longer being made, Mitsubishi currently only offer the Pajero Sport in this class, which is essentially just a Triton ute with a wagon body stuck on it. The Sport has far less power, less comfort and IMHO far less capability. So come on Mitsubishi listen to good advice when you hear it and get that boxy new Pajero produced a.s.a.p.

Great review. A little late on the post but pajeros are rocketing up in second hand value here in NZ as people now realise that they are a better vehicle than the equivalent Toyota offerings. Grab one while you can as they are no longer available from new. And this is going to be one of those vehicles that “I wish I’d bought one “ you will regret not buying when you had the chance. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Some lessons learnt after over a year of ownership of a 2014 lwb 3.2 model: Rust protection isn't what it should be, so especially if you live in a country where they use salt on winter roads, beware. Details like the spare wheel carrier seem to lack any rust protection what so ever. Brake calipers can sieze from corrosion. Inside the fuel door there is a sticker that says DIESEL EN590. This is no joke! Use real diesel fuel only! Biodiesel that doesn't meet the EN590 standard can dissolve the liner inside the fuel tank which turns into a sticky goo that clogs up the fuel filters. The so called "resistor mod" for the EGR system works beautifully. It disables the EGR system without any actual modification apart from splicing a few cents worth of resistor into a cable under the bonnet which fools the ecu into never opening the egr-valve while driving. Stops soot an oil blocking the intake over time. Later models have a stereo/dvd/nav head unit with bluetooth compatibility, but it's pretty crude and unintuitive to use. Sadly not easy to replace if the car is also fitted with the Rockford Fosgate sound system. Sound is pretty decent, although the interior plastics around the subwoofer can rattle pretty badly. Air conditioning can malfunction, not only from the compressor failing, but under the car behind the right rear wheel is a separate blower and condensor unit for the rear AC. It's mounted in a vulnerable spot and it can start leaking due to corrosion as well. Electronics are a bit outdated, there is no warning system for things like broken light bulbs or low wiper fluid for instance. Auto transmission ecu is supposedly adaptive to your driving style but the whole gearbox feels rather sluggish compared to some modern ones. Should be reliable though, if serviced. The stability and traction control system also feels pretty slow and primitive. There is a button do turn it off, but it's still on anyway so no powerslides are possible on icy roads. Or rather, you can begin a slide and it is then hindered by the system in a very abrupt and unrefined way. On the whole is still think it's not a bad 4x4 car, and if you want a true offroader that will still be comfortable on a motorway journey there are not many alternatives to the Pajero/Shogun. It will be a lot cheaper to buy than a Land Cruiser and a lot cheaper to run than a Range Rover.

Matt Harding I used only Shoguns from 2004 to 2018. Was a massive fan, although much preferred the petrol engine version which they simply stopped making. Diesel far too clattering and shaky round town. Although fine on motorway. My main car now is an RS4. Completely different kettle of fish of course. But other car is a Q7 50 S-line. It is on a completely different level to Shogun in every way. Quiet, refined and stylish. Fantastic virtual cockpit display. So as I say, I was a massive fan - but there are very much better vehicles out there.

@@pippipster6767 Sure, I accept its a dinosaur now and noisy, slow and thirsty, it just has a character I love, I go offroading and tow big caravans and transport 7 people so it does it all and it was cheap really at £6k. It's not a daily driver for me, i have a hatchback for daily use, as you say around town the engine is very gruff to say the least. I know why they made it a 4 cylinder for space and to have a short nose but i wish it was a 6 cylinder though!

I started driving one the very first generation back in 1991. Then came the next 2.8L turbo second generation, love it so much! After that I traded in for a V75, the 3rd generation which is a 3.5L GDI V6 engine. Had a terrible accident on road by I was fine and able to walk away from it unharmed. Now I own and drive the fourth generation which is this V98 model. Imported from Japan 2014 and put on over 200,000km on it! Only usual wear and tear. Love all the Pajero and I will keep this for very very long time. Thanks for your video and this is one of the most practical wagon you can own

The 4M41 3.2 turbo diesel is a great motor! 441nm torque at under 2000 rpm right where you need it for 4x4 work and coupled with the Aisin tiptronic " Superselect" transmission it's fantastic both on and off the bitumen. The overall design is extremely practical - I've not found a better design in 40 years. I tow a heavy offroad camper trailer on very soft sand and this Pajero handles it easily, unhook the trailer and it's just plain fun even on the rough stuff here in Australia. The beauty is that it's onroad manners are also great, driving and handling like a car and I find the ride quality excellent especially for touring long distances in our very hot summers - never a single issue with the airconditioning, always ice cold, in fact it's the first vehicle I've owned that is a little bit too cold! I raise the thermo setting sometimes. Mine has close to 200,000 kilometres on the clock and feels/drives the same as when new and I believe the motor/drivetrain will last at least 400-500,000 kilometres. I get between 35 and 45 thousand kilometres out of a set of Yokohama Geolander tyres. Out of interest the word Pajero was chosen for it's real meaning - an Argentinian wild cat found only in the most inaccessible mountainous regions. It always makes me laugh how flustered drivers of other brands get when the Paris-Dakar statistics get quoted, but these models have withstood the test of time and gained a lot of respect the last few years especially for very good reason. It's a shame Mitsubishi are beginning to wind down production of this venerable all rounder. Note: Mitsubishi technical says the transmission is sealed for life but a lot of guys here towing heavy caravans etc do get the trans flushed/serviced - the general wisdom is to use the genuine Mitsubishi "Diaqueen" fluid only which is very expensive.

Yea I'am a Mitsubishi technician/mechanic since 20yrs and I have a 2010 Pajero with the 3.2 and Aisin aut. It Will pass 400.000km next month, I'am the second owner and have done all of the work on it since Day one. The only thing done with the engine is service, I have changed oil in the transmission once when it passed 300.000km just because I felt that with those miles you'r better safe than sorry.. And because I drive around alot with trailer. There is not One part of the suspension or the steering that is changed since new, I'am however planning to give it a update in the suspension with some Ironman lift kit or something like that, it starts to give in for the gravity... 😁. But it never hits the bottom of the suspension yet so I'am quite impressed! And I'am driving alot of bad roads.. and fast.. The only downpart I feal with it is the road noise, I'am thinking of take the interiour out and put some noise damping in, i've seen a KZbin video from russia when they did that. Overall I have to say that the Pajero/Montero is the most impressive car I've been working with and I believe I would say that even if I didn't worked with Mitsubishi. They are built like a TANk and the 4wd in combo with the Long suspension travel is fantastic! Cheers from Northern Sweden 🍻

My 2015 model ,bought as a demo car few years ago is great ,the one below this model so no screens in the back and no 20 inch wheels (which I diden't want anyway no good for off road) . Cars just done 26000 miles, front tires were shot so replaced all 4 with BF goodrich all terrains ,bit more road noise but I'm off road a lot of the time round the estate and these tires are top notch .Had a Pathfinder before and it spent most of its time with electrical problems back at Nissan ,got rid before warranty ran out ,the Pathfinder just felt like an estate car ,the Shogun is a real acricultural 4x4 and feels purposeful .Good and fair review .

I had my MK3 for 10 years and it was superb, not flash or fancy, but it always started first time every time, the only problems in 10 years were a battery which lasted for nearly 15 years (original battery) and a replacement exhaust, and it was fully rustproofed using cavity wax on every cavity, and underbody wax on all external underbody panels. Replace the ATF with the correct Dia Queen SP 3 and NOT Dexron or other cheaper alternatives. They work well with Cooper tyres and parts are readily and cheaply available if you know where to shop, so self servicing is easy for the DIY owner, so why did mine go? because some moron in a van drove into it and it was written off. It towed up to 8 tonne tractors off road, spent about a third of its life off road, and never missed a beat. What do I have now? a MK4.

Ive own my 2008 shogun/paj since 2014. Dash rattles crazy loud!, prone to problems with head gasket if you skip diesel fuel filter replacement. Drove it in 4x4 high (without center differential locked "orange light") for the las couple of years, it makes it safer and corners better.. Take into consideration I live in rural Costa Rica area where theres no paved roads. It starts and goes every time. 4.5star value

Another alternative to the mitsubishi is the Nissan pathfinder R51 which I currently own and have managed to get 42 mpg out of it (that what the computer said?) it also has automatic lights, reversing camera and auto dip side mirrors. Just have to watch the chassis on particular models.

I live in the U.S and just recently repaired my 1999 2.5 gen Montero after sitting in my back yard for 8 years. And had forgotten how incredible it rides for being so old. I am so glad I got mine fixed up. And still get to drive it everyday. I live in south Texas and I have only seen one like mine in the past 8 years. So mine is pretty rare

Good honest review I personally have so much respect for the Shogun Bought myself a new Lwb automatic in 2014, at age 21. I wanted nothing else especially after having a used 2008 model previously Once the engine was run in, I changed the exhaust, built a custom downpipe from the Turbo and got it ECUTEK remapped. Currently on BP ultimate diesel it's kicking out atleast 255hp And 0 - 60 in 7.8 with oversized 285/50R20 Cooper Zeon's Towing is effortless, just need to make sure the transmission has locked up or tow in 4th to reduce excessive build-up of heat Hardly use it these days but when I need to tow anything it's a joy. And been 100% reliable

Grown up around the 3rd and 4th gen. And it's gotten so bad that nowadays both my dad and I drive one. My dads, which was used as a towing vehicle a lot, has now done over 500.000km and it's 15 years old. Still feels new, just needs good maintainance once a year and after that it's all good. The one I bought (after saving for ages as these things are still, 2nd hand and 15 years old, not cheap), lacks a rear bench, because I want to convert it into a camper like vehicle, to drive all around Europe. And when I was looking for a good car to build into a camper, I could simply not find anything coming close to what Pajero's offer: Reliability, range, comfort, offroading, towing, fuel efficiency, you name it. I kinda never want to drive anything else anymore, due to all the memories I've got with the car model and the trust I have in it to take me anywhere, anytime.

Shogun's are brilliant. I worked for Mitsubishi for 5 yrs and these things are literally bomb proof. Usually exceptional reliability, but can be expensive if parts do fail, but that doesn't happen to often. It's a pity the rest of the Mitsubishi range isn't that exciting these days.

Unibody with integral frame construction and independent suspension on all 4 corners means that this is also the best on road handling (by a long way) genuine 4x4 (gear reduction transfer case and diff locks). No unnecessary toys to break down and legendary reliability. These things can genuinely drive off road in harsh conditions for a long time without breaking down unlike the admittedly "competent" Range Rovers. Its a proper truck. Not so easy to prep for serious overlanding as a 70, 80 or 100 series Land Cruiser though...

I had a long wheelbase Pajero as 'my' car and my partner of the time had the new family car. I loved it, but I’m the generation that loves lots of chrome. It came from Japan and it took me several motorway trips to blow out all the crap that had built up with the 50mph speed limit over there. It felt like I was driving the living room sofa, and the biggest repair was the wiring for the back seat. I have to say it was my favourite used car after my VX490, in fact it I’d put it in my top 6 of all my cars.

All I know is that in 2001 I bought a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero LTD, it’s 18 years old, has 245k miles and still runs great! It’s first trip to the shop was in 2017 when my sunroof got stuck open, and I just had to replace my a/c fan motor this month. It’s been air born more times than I can count, and besides the a/c fan motor, the left headlight bulb, and the rear shocks, it has had no other issues. And yes, brakes once, tires many times, battery etc., the wear and tear things always cost. But mechanically, it is am amazing machine!

High Peak Autos - Consumer Reports magazine ran a series on their rollover tendency. Prior to 2001 the steering was ½ turn end to end, or lock to lock, and besides quick was incredibly responsive. The magazine showed this with perfect clarity that the vehicles could be overturned with a series of sharp turns. I.e. at speed, rock to the right and pull sharp to the left and the vehicle goes on its side. Since then the steering has been reduced and dampened so the hydraulic fluid has a restrictive valve that limits the amount of turn. The change didn’t correct the reputation, and the sales slowed drastically. And the short wheelbase version was never sold due to US regulations to protect their "truck industry" from foreign competition. And sadly, if you look at Mitsubishi’s production stats for the Montero, 2019 showed just 1000 in its worldwide production, that is scary low. I’ve heard rumors that since Nissan has purchased a third of Mitsubishi, they don’t want the competition to their Titan (US name) so they have restricted production. Also, in America, most SUV's are sold to the soccer mom market. Reviews in the USA focused on their ride, quietness, etc., instead of their off-road functionality.

Excellent car, huge exiting and entering of the vehicle without knocking yourself out unlike RR, off road ability is equal to any higher priced 4x4 if not better, only issue is ground clearance, especially in stock form compared to the LC Prado/Colorado, suspension is torsion which is good. The engines are good, but are known for H/Gaskets... (V6 gas) this is a tool to own..

you're ri8 i bought a petrol & manual 59 insignia in Dec 2021 and its nearly 6 months and only has issues. Had to change alt, thermostat, and now have to change steering pump and water pump. Had a 2.4 petrol auto CR-V 2012 US spec back in Oman for 10 years and did 265,000 km. Did service every 6,000 km and didn't have any issue when i sold it back in Nov 2021. Heck, even the Honda employee told the car was immaculate and in showroom condition.

Greetings!! We have had a 2008 Pajero for almost 2 years and it runs great!! There are a few niggles, like the drivers seat needs reupholstering and the paint doesn't seem too robust. For its age its okay and it does what we need it to do. Ours has a 3L V6 which is a little thirsty but its nice and smooth!! I'd buy another in a heartbeat...loved the review...take care from Jamaica!!🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲

Got same on in Australia. Diesel auto. I put bullbar, lift kit and roof racks. Plus off-road tyres. I still get 10 litre per 100 around town. Though to remember is the best models are 2010 to 2016. Outside of that has a DPF and less power, less torque and more problems. I haven’t had any issues. Just a egr code that fixed with manifold clean and catch can. Many people just block the erg off completely and put blanking plug to stop the engine codes. They preform amazing off road as traction control is like twin diff locks. If you are not in LLrange, then be sure switch off the stability control if you off road doing sand or mud etc. On the highway these do 200km/hour. I know because I had to overtake a road train and did it quick. My nay grief with the Pajero is not having decent under bonnet space fo second battery. But I use a smalller second. Also most of us chuck the rear seats out and use the storage for other things. I got a fridge slide on top of a storage. Then other side still folds up to get into storage. Other people use it for second battery or water or fuel tank. Definitely much better car than the equivalent Toyota Prado. Half the price, far more reliable and far more torque, power and towing capacity. In central Australia the Toyota D4D is renowned for cracking pistons because can’t handle the fuels. On another note, I fit my 2005 Polaris phoenix quad bike in the rear also!! But with the middle row seats removed. Only takes around 10 minutes to unbolt.

Hi mate I bought a 2002 black shogun off you a year or so ago. Been a good car, I had to do a lot more welding than I'd have liked but still going strong, it went to lands end and back with caravan no problem.

I must take issue with something you said in this video "Short wheel base Shogun's make good tow vehicles." This piece of advice was passed on to me by a mechanic who lived near Lindis Pass (New Zealand) which often faces inclement weather, snow and rain, and slippery road conditions. At the time I used a Pajero lwb for towing a 25 yacht and he commented this was a good vehicle for towing and then went on to say 'avoid short wheelbase four wheel drives like the plague as in slippery conditions they are more likely to jack knife - the longer the wheelbase the better.' based on his experience in rescuing trailer/ vehicle combinations from the Pass. Something I had not thought of before.

Used to drive these at work....on the 2008 cars had two engines fail due to timing chain failures, on 2009 onwards they had a revised timing chain so as long as there serviced on time shouldnt be a issue, apart from that very few mechanical failures even when they used to come off fleet at 100-150k miles and used to get thrashed around 24/7.

They've had a timing chain recall in the UK , a check on the top guide. Think they recalled in Australia too, seem to remember the recall was over there first.

The top chainguide is a service item, about every 100,000 km needs replacing. Should do it when tappets adjusted every 50,000.

one of the last true 4wd cars that actually used to go off-road too. Although i do like the design of the wanker, i completely agree with you the soft "gender neutral" design in the modern SUV's, witch need design update every 2 years to stay in tune with the competition, while designs like the Gwagon and the Suzuki Jimny will last for the next 20 years. So all things considered, I'd say that the old comparo with a Toyota is a bit uncharitable to this vehicle... would suggest not to judge this 'book' just by its cover (or lack thereof 😁)

I have a 2006 NP Pajero, I still have it and is the best and most reliable vehicle I have ever owned, 70 % of my driving is towing our 19' Caravan and its never missed a beat, shame that they will not be exporting anymore to OZ from next year.

Took a 2014 Shogun with over 195,000 on the clock over the army's offroad course at Driffield. It ate it up with room for a pudding. We now use Land Rover Discoveries, and they're rubbish. Miss our auto 3ltr Shoguns so much. Always reliable and great off road.

I am working in UAE I have been studding about cars above 6 years and you are spot on about this car reviews and what you say on this Pajero is quite true. In here we get 3.8L V6 engine. However they are under powered compare to Prado 4L v6 for sand dunes off-roading. Excellent work

Automatic lights are unnecessary. If you don't know when to put the lights on/off, you shouldn't be driving at all. Same for automatic wipers.

I’ve had 6 Shoguns from the Mk 1 to the current one. All short wheelbase. I’ve had to replace 2 dual mass flywheels so had bills of nearly £2000.00. So this last one is an automatic and it is hoped will bring me no more transmission issues. I had to get rid of one on the quick because of rust and I had to replace a rusty fuel tank. This last one had issues with the brake pressure sensor that was replaced under warranty ( a bill of nearly £3000.00.). So not cheap cars if they go wrong but I love them and will look to replace my one with a last in the line model in a couple or so years time.

Mitsubishi sold these way past their expiry date. In Australia, it was only discontinued in 2020 that means it was on sale for 22 years. Unfortunately somewhere around 2010, Mitsubishi lost its way and just floundered and wasted time instead of developing new vehicles. Hopefully the new partnership with Nissan-Renault gets them back on track.

i bought one of the last 197 bhp ones. it'll take a hit in value initially but over time there will be still be a need from the country set for a 3.5t tower that isn't a delicate soft roader/ unreliable LR product.

The Pajero was discontinued in Japan in August 2019 with the release of "Final Edition" model, which is limited to 700 units.

Great review, although my Shogun was an older model and swb I could not fault it, tough decesion when I came to get rid of it and like you said seriously contemplated a another one (albeit lwb) however decided it no longer met my needs. Everything worked on mine with no bodge repairs, bodywork was solid and like a tin of 'Ronseal' it "did exactly what it said on the tin" sheer practicality forced the sale (have two elderly parents and acess was an issue) would definitely recommend buying one but don't buy the first one you see, there are plenty out there and, as you mentioned buy the best you can afford not the cheapest 👍👍
